Virginia leaves Fowler alone in wilderness of failure

Alternative title: Things I never thought I’d say – ‘Still dreaming of a trip to Omaha’

(Picture above was emailed to SFN from a reader. If anyone out there deserves ‘credit’ then please let us know)

Since Lee Fowler became NC State’s Athletics Director, the Virginia Cavaliers whose overall athletics program ranks near the top of the ACC with extremely strong, broad athletic success – the Wolfpack is the only ACC athletics programs to have failed to participate in at least a Frozen Four, a College World Series, a BCS Bowl, or a National Basketball Championship game.

LSU battles Texas in this year’s College World Series that begins tonight after another College World Series that passed without NC State’s participation. (Thank God that Carolina got knocked out by Herb Sendek’s Arizona State Sun Devils. How in the world could Arizona State ever hope to compete with the likes of mighty UNC-Chapel Hill?)

With Virginia’s participation in this year’s CWS, did you know that half of the Atlantic Coast Conference has now participated in the College World Series since 2006? Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia have all found a way to make the CWS at least once in the last four seasons with Carolina appearing four years in a row. Unfortunately, even with an all-important renovated ‘fuhcility’, NC State is not amongst the group.

In Coach Elliott Avent’s 13 seasons at the helm of the NC State Baseball program, the Wolfpack has yet to win a single ACC Championship or even finish first in the conference’s regular season. This past season – his 13th- was not only his worst since arriving in Raleigh, but it was the worst in the program’s history over the last forty years.

‘Strangely’, NC State’s worst baseball season in a couple of generations happens to coincide with the completion of Lee Fowler’s all-important facility improvements at Doak Field?! Please correct me if I am wrong, but hasn’t every single player on this team been recruited to the program after the completion of the ‘we must build it or we will die’ improvements at Doak Field?

Before you get all fired up that we everyone here really cares that much about baseball, then you need to read – Why I don’t get worked up about Avent. But, if we are going to field a program, is it too much to ask to at least win something? at some point?

Of course, any focus on NC State’s troubles are only accented by the success created by Mike Fox in Chapel Hill. When Fox took over at Carolina, the Tarheel program was actually inferior to NC State’s program. Oh…and Carolina has just recently finished their facilities improvement. How in the world did they do it?

Before Mike Fox, North Carolina baseball competed for ACC Championships but rarely cracked the national rankings. Dick Baddour, in one of his first moves as Athletics Director, made the decision to hire Fox, who had won the NCAA Division III title at North Carolina Wesleyan.

“We knew we could be better than we had been in baseball,” Baddour says today.

Under Fox, the North Carolina program has risen step by step through the ranks where college baseball prominence is concerned. In fact, now the Tar Heels have attained a level not seen before in the Atlantic Coast Conference, by earning four straight trips to the College World Series.

I really have to wonder how much, if any, Foulup had to do with the hiring of Kelly Harper. With today’s news of the first verbal for her first class, I have to wonder also if Foulup’s hat can now (unjustly) hang on her as well as TOB (also unjustly most IMO.) I must admit that I’m very excited about the future of Wolfpack women’s BB since she came on board!

Just so I got it correct. According to page 1, when football, mens basketball, and womens basketball all start winning more games, then no one will say, good job Coach Fowler. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  3. highstick 06/23/2009 at 10:13 PM #

Bubba, “when” is the key word. Seen anything remotely pointed in that direction that can be attributed to Fowler? Seen anything remotely resembling a winning men’s basketball program?

    When…..!

  4. Alpha Wolf 06/24/2009 at 9:38 AM #

Bubba, in the case of some programs, I am sticking with “if” and not “when.”

  5. highstick 06/24/2009 at 10:31 AM #

Alpha, maybe “when and if” should be used in the same question.

I’m very pleased with the direction of the football team, but don’t see any glimmers of hope in the other sports.

Someone had asked about what happened with the announcements that were going to be made a few weeks ago. Did they die or just get shuttled to the rear with the Easley-Oblinger situation?

No, we won’t and we shouldn’t. Here’s why:

    1) TOB wanted us. Fowler almost blew that deal. There was a point when TOB actually had to call US back to see if the deal was still on. Fowler was probably napping at the lake at the time. I give Fowler ZERO credit for TOB’s hiring. All Fowler does is sign TOB’s paycheck every week.

    2) The mens’ basketball coaching search was a farce. Fowler bungled that one every which way but loose, and then brought in a company to handle things, and they got Sidney for us. Again, Fowler just signs Sid’s paycheck every week. And arguably, if he had done a better job, he would be signing a different basketball coach’s paychecks than Sidney Lowe. (I’m still pulling for ole Sid anyway!)

    3) Admittedly, I don’t know much about the women’s basketball situation, like how that search was run. I’ll be willing to give Fowler credit for that, unless someone has information that reduces him, once again, to the signer of her weekly paycheck. I do give him credit for not blindly going with Coach Glances JUST BECAUSE Kay Yow requested her as her replacement. This may be the first thing Fowler has gotten right. Oh, and the fuhcilities.

I don’t know if Sidney is going to survive here or not. If he is not, I sure don’t want Fowler running another coaching search for Sid’s replacement.

^^For those of you too young to remember Watergate, looks like you’re going to get to experience it NC State style. Let the cover-ups begin.

Can someone please give an update on the Fowler situation?

    I read this one yesterday

Lee who? Bob Lee? Stan Lee? Robert E. Lee? Katie Lee? Kimora Lee? David Lee Roth? Jamie Lee Curtis? Sure as hell not…our Lee..not ole Jeb

Not with words like respected, director(s) of athletics, effective, influential, and invaluable all in the same paragraph.

Don’t know anything concrete, but action continues behind the scenes. Very tangled web of activity, for sure.

BJD, are you saying they are still working on ridding ourselves of Mr. Fowler?

  14. Alpha Wolf 06/24/2009 at 2:43 PM #

I’ve said this multiple times, and things have not changed: there is a schism amongst the shakers at NC State regarding Fowler. The move to depose him was very real, and word of it came from to us from separate sources the highest of high levels at the university.

I’m sorry if you think not saying who said what is cloying or even if you think that it’s a work of fiction, but I can say it certainly is not the latter. The simple truth is that when you are told something off of the record, if you have any integrity or common sense you heed that request.

Things have obviously changed over there, obviously, with new leadership and new members of the BOT which in and of itself has a new leader. There are still people that want Fowler gone, and there are still people that want him to stay. All, however, for the time being, have other more important issues on their plates.

Fowler will draw their attention at some point in the future, and the political wrangling will happen. You will know who wins by what happens or what does not happen: if he leaves, his detractors carried the day. If he stays, obviously, his supporters held sway.

At this moment, however, it doesn’t seem to be a priority.

  15. highstick 06/24/2009 at 3:07 PM #

I surmised, and hoped, that the “other more important issues on the plate” might be the case.

Hopefully we can keep the pressure on and do a thorough housecleaning!

    Thanks for the info, Alpha.

I’ll keep the faith that as soon as this storm has blown over, and there are no longer “bigger fish to fry” that the next “fish” fried will be ole Jed.

  17. highstick 06/24/2009 at 10:02 PM #

By the way, guys, Lee announced today that the United States cannot be expected to compete with Spain in soccer.

  18. SaccoV 06/25/2009 at 8:34 AM #

Two things, and I’ll hopefully maintain a semblance of brevity (I know, it’s difficult for a verbose buttmuncher like myself).
    1) Alpha–it appeared to me (only as a fan and a blogger and NOT as anyone with any pertinent inside information) that Oblinger was a big supporter of Lee (as proven by the “Award of Excellence” given to professional sh–disturbers). Doesn’t Oblinger’s departure … er … re-location mean that support for Lee has dwindled by default? Again, that is my own personal analysis, NOT something gleaned from being “in-the-know.”
2)As for Lee getting “credit” if our teams succeed … I have stated before that as for as finding a coach goes, Lee Fowler has only one success that has in any form paid off (as of right now)–the hiring of Carter Jordan as Head Wrestling Coach. Unfortunately, I agree with earlier posts in that TOB was definitely NOT a Fowler hire. Other posts on this blog (and elsewhere) attest to that assertion. The bottom line is that every State fan and alum wants great success for ALL of our athletic teams. We have been repeatedly been told that demanding success (meaning wins) against ANYONE is too much to ask for; we’ve been made to feel like orphans in a league our college and its athletics programs help to build. For those feelings alone, no amount of success will ever make Lee Fowler into what he views himself as. You can prove this by asking any school in this conference (or perhaps in the entire Southeast) to trade ADs for just one day, and see how many takers you’ll get.

Jed should grab that quote and put it on his resume’ if its true. Might be the only endorsement he can find.

    Alpha,
Thanks for the update. I suspected as much but hoped for more.

Alpha, I’m curious if you or anyone knows why ANYONE involved still supports the buffoon known as Lee Fowler. You said some still want him to stay (and I’m not questioning you on that). I’d just like to know what it is about him that they like. Is it the fuhcilities that he was involved in improving?

  21. old13 06/25/2009 at 6:14 PM #

Is it the fuhcilities that he was involved in improving?

He was BARELY involved in IMO!

For whatever it is worth (probably nothing), I just wrote a letter to Woodward and the BOT voicing my support to get rid of Foulup immediately.

I actually like our chances next year and the year after for baseball. Why?, oh $h^t I forgot this is going out to this crowd so who gives ah…

Pitching, hitting, Holliday, oh crap…wait a minute, I came to aide Jeff and the rest of these stiffs when they needed help with posts last year when hits were off the charts. I would write post after games we would beat UM after walk off home runs, what 12 posts?! 6 being Dr. BadgerPack?! WTF.

Yet stick a Lee Fowler made me bend over and howl about this and it’s actually interesting to post something related to our talented young group of hard ballers.

Complete tangent but can we get a follow up on HateFansNation on that ballzy AD at Nebraska that you all were so infatuated with (what was it Pederson, oh who gives a flip about names of the unemployed since we’re all rich an’ almighty here) . Those was some inspiring chest pumpin’ rhetoric he was throwin’ out there. Certainly Nebraska got everything they deserved after he PR’d it the way arm chair BOT’s Blog sites love it.

Ha- It’s still fun to drop in once a year and still see you guys bring the SOS.
