Only 12% Of State Fans Dislike Krzyzewski

In a Public Policy Polling release, some interesting numbers come to light regarding North Carolina fans and their likes and dislikes in terms of college athletics.

NC State is the second in popularity in NC, with 19% of respondents labeling themselves as Wolfpack fan. Nearly twice as many respondents, 37% identified as Tar Heel faithful, while a full 25% did not identify themselves as fans of any Big Four school. The Pack’s trailing UNC is understandable, given the success that their programs collectively see, and also because of the constant exposure that their teams receive, especially in events that NC State is not a part of — the Final Four, for example.

Secondly, only 12% of Wolfpack fans have an unfavorable view of Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. That number was surprising to me, I thought it would be at least triple that — if not more. That’s until I think it through. For all intents and purposes, any NC State – Duke basketball rivalry died in the early 1990’s, and now the once-storied series is as lopsided as a match play tournament between myself and Tiger Woods. Few State fans salivate at the thought of playing Duke, and many if not most have a resigned attitude of defeat before the contest ever tips off. Considering that, it is easy to see why Coach K does little to draw the ire of NC State’s fans — his teams apparently are in another league than the Wolfpack.

Q2 Which ACC school do you have the most loyalty to?
If Duke, press 1. If UNC, press 2. If NC State, press 3. If Wake Forest, press 4. If none of the above, press 5.

Duke ……………………………………………………… 14%
UNC………………………………………………………. 37%
NC State ………………………………………………… 19%
Wake Forest …………………………………………… 5%
None of the Above …………………………………… 25%

Krzyzewski’s rating among Wolfpack fans:

Favorable: 51%
Unfavorable: 12%
Not Sure: 37%

While visiting college campuses last week with my oldest son (rising senior in HS), the subject of camping out for tickets came up. I told him about having to camp out for UNC-CH tickets and he said he bet that getting Duke tickets was just as tough. When I told him that Duke was a no contest kind of game during my years in Raleigh (’79-84), he just got a blank stare.

As for the dislike numbers for Coach K amongst State fans, you have to remember that Coach K is the only guy other than Norman Sloan, who has been able to beat up on UNC-CH for any given 3-4 year period. Watching Dean Smith retire as the second best coach in the Big Four was not all bad.

It’s funny, b/c Coach K will retire the same way (second banana to Ol’ Roy).

I hate Duke and I hate Coach K, too. But I’m an ill-tempered SOB in general.

Coach RatFace has always had one redeeming quality…he always beat the holes. How can you dislike someone who the holes hate so much? Of course, lately, he’s been losing to them more than I’d like to see and therefore my opinion of him is falling quickly. If Duke isn’t beating Carolina, what use have I for them?

I do think it has to do with K’s ability to beat Carolina. Carolina is far and away our more hated rival, and there’s no one other than K that can get to the Heels these days…you may not like one of the bullies in your school, but if he’s the only one that can beat up the other, bigger bully, you’ll root for him to do it.

I think it has EVERYTHGING to do with UNC. At my core I can’t stand UNC…I can never pull for them in any sport or academic endeavor. So the enemy of my enemy is…

I sometimes find myself cheering for Duke’s success only because I know how mad it will make those at Carolina. In Basketball, it is to the point now where when we have a successful game, my friends who are Carolina fans will comment with statements akin to a “pat on the back” or worse “a rub of the head” type mentality, with no sense of any real rivalry…And with Duke fans, theres a certain kinship there…the mindset of “I don’t care for your team much, but I sure do HATE the Tar Heels, don’t you?”

Another reason our one football game with UNC is so valuable…they HATE to lose…and actually consider us rivals in Football…and when they do lose, they retreat to Basketball season…and since we rarely are able to do so, I cheer for A.B.C. to win, even if that means cheering for Dook…

The poll I’d rather see Wolfpackers do would be who do they hate worse, UNC or Jed?

And one more thing. In my opinion, when Coach K retires from Duke, he is not going to finish second banana to ANY other ACC coach, unless Roy wins 2 more, which I don’t think is gonna happen.

I know people who pull for Duke because they hate Carolina. Its actually quite funny.

Plus Coach K is fond of NC State and NC State FANS in particular. If a powerful earthquake ever opened up and swallowed Durham (fingers crossed) I truly believe Coach K would come to NCSU to coach.

I don’t mind seeing K’s dookies whup th’ tarholes because, as others have pointed out, the tarholes are the worst whiners in the conference. So I guess the enemy of my enemy is my friend sort of thing applies. I don’t like the way K punks the refs but all good coaches do that.

K is less repulsive to me than Fowlup. Heck, Fowlup basically works for UNC by hobbling us. As far as I’m concerned, he can just go use th’ fuhcilities.

  9. BJD95 06/24/2009 at 5:34 PM #

I think Roy will win more than two more. And that Coach K has definitely won his last. Coach K has truly morphed into what he once most despised (Dean Smith).

Let’s consider also that we all live by and work with UNC bandwagoneers and alumni, while Duke fans are harder to find and are, in my personal experience, a lot less obnoxious.

I was out in front of Reynolds a number of times in the ticket line with Texpack, back in the day…

I think a lot of State folks have a good feeling about K because of his friendship with V.

My favorite time of day: 9:19. Why? You tell me?

  12. goforit 06/24/2009 at 10:04 PM #

I think K’s relationship with V has something to do with it. Also the fact that State fans pull for Duke at least twice a year.

  13. eas 06/25/2009 at 12:01 PM #

I think “goforit” captured my views and most of the people I know.

“I think K’s relationship with V has something to do with it. Also the fact that State fans pull for Duke at least twice a year.”

I have always had respect form K from many years ago and his relationship with Jimmy V. I dislike Duke but it’s not for lack of respect. Coach K runs a pretty tight ship and has a lot of respect for Wolfpack Athletics. Just my 2 cents but I don’t dislike him. Great Coach and mentor for kids.

Still want to throw them a beatdown every year though.

My good feelings for Coach K stem entirely from Valvano’s battle with cancer. K was a true friend to him. I wish our University had shown that kind of loyalty to V.

They gonna have to survey more than 700 people to get me to give this poll any serious thought. Majority of those surveyed considered thmeselves democrat and liberal thus UNC came out on top as most supported. Tell me something we don’t already know! Wonder where those 700 people lived? Chapel Hill? The poll is a joke!
