statusquOblinger Resigns (Updated 3:35pm – Easley Fired)

What are we going to do now that we are losing one of the all-time best nicknames SFN has ever originated?

NC State University Chancellor James Oblinger resigned effective immediately. Former UNC Charlotte Chancellor Jim Woodward will take over. This link will take you to a great profile of Woodward from a 2004 article.

It was a typical mission for Woodward, an aerospace engineer and MBA who mingles academics with big business and backroom finagling. The man Broad calls “the best manager in the system” recently announced that he will retire next year at 65. Major growth has marked his 15-year tenure–the longest of any chancellor in the system. Enrollment is up nearly 50%, the $84.5 million endowment is six times what it was, there are 12 doctoral programs where there were none, and there are nine new buildings, with another nine under way. The school’s research has spawned 24 companies.

Despite what he sees as his greatest accomplishment–hoisting the school into the ranks of Ph.D.-granting research universities–others laud his prowess as a diplomat, working effectively within the 16-campus UNC system, ever mindful of the concentric circles of statewide politics surrounding it, while at the same time cementing the school’s ties with Charlotte’s business establishment. This feat is akin to climbing a greased pole, and Woodward has demonstrated an uncanny knack for knowing when to press on and when to slide back.

I was kind of hoping that General Hugh Shelton would get the nod for interim; and, I also thought that the recent appointment of fellow Edgecombe County native, Norris Tolson to the Board of Trustees was a step to Shleton’s appointment. Oh well. No biggie. Chancellor Woodward appears to be a fine choice based on what we have gathered to this point.

BJD95 & SFN UPDATE: Here’s an e-mail from Bob Jordan regarding SQ’s resignation:

To the Students, Faculty and Friends of NC State University:

In a few moments, we will be announcing that James Oblinger has chosen to resign as chancellor of NC State. I wanted you to be the first to hear this disappointing news.

Chancellor Oblinger cares deeply for NC State. He has devoted 23 years to our university and his leadership will be greatly missed.

One of things I admire most about Jim Oblinger is that he has always put the university’s interests ahead of his own. He is resigning because he does not want the ongoing controversy surrounding the university’s hiring and employment of Mary Easley to continue detracting from the important work of our faculty and staff. He wants the university to move forward, and that is what we must do.

A copy of the official announcement of the chancellor’s resignation, along with a copy of documents that NC State submitted to the U.S. Attorney’s office today, can be found on the university’s Web site at 9:30 this morning at www.ncsu.edu.

I will continue to keep you informed about these developments and our search for a new chancellor in the coming weeks. If you have questions or comments, you can send them to me at: [email protected].

Bob Jordan, Chair of the NC State Board of Trustees

Yep, this beacon of embarrassment loves and cares about NC State so much that he plans to NOT work for six months at full salary, in the midst of an unprecedented budget crisis. This is also a guy who most certainly does NOT need the money. Selfless. Honorable. Almost saintly.

How can this man resign wanting this money while simultaneously condeming Mary Easley for demanding the money she is legally due because of Oblinger (and Larry Neilsen’s) very own decisions and approvals?

We harken back to many of the comments that we made in this definitive entry on the topic. When you don’t have any genuine convictions and when are not truly driven by a tangible/measurable set of goals of achievement for your institution, then you will inevitably be exposured by gross hypocrisy.

This is what happens to people who do not any true convictions and passively ‘manage’ by avoidance and without driving to reach stretch goals. If the Chancellor and the folks at NC State were actually executing against a well-defined strategy, then all behaviors under that strategy can/could be explained and justified as supporting that strategy. But, when the bulk of your daily behaviors are construed by everyone around you as ‘risk avoidance’ and wanting to ‘do as little as possible to upset the status quo’, then you cannot truly strive for excellence or have any guiding barometer for decisions.

[snip]

You see – it is all about being comfortable with the status quo all around you in Raleigh. Why would NC State dare bring in someone from the outside when the Chancellor can live in luxury along side his local buddy? Of course, you can’t really blame Chancellor Oblinger; it is the ‘NC State way’ to ultimately promote a food chemist from campus into the steward and leader of the entire University after the ‘good old boys’ and the tenured faculty had been pushed by someone who actually had drive and ambition to leave the zip code every now and then (Marye Ann Fox).

Does it surprise anyone that Oblinger is one of Bob Kennel’s heroes? Old Kennel sure has has kept a low profile on the internet in recent months. For years we’ve been leactured that any dissent against the leadership at NC State is atrocious since these leaders are so great. Yet, in the middle of all the *#($ hitting the fan the cheerleader has been muted. Maybe the evil internet made all of this happen? To his credit, I only count eight uses of the word ‘I’ in Kennel’s 100+ word letter to the N&O. That is SIGNIFICANTLY below the usual minimum standards of a 1:10 ratio of I:all other words.

Here’s a link to WRAL’s take.

Here’s a link to some developments from the weekend.

” Someone should write up this whole thing and put it in a textbook for executives under “How not taking a stand is worse in the end”. Instead of firing Easley weeks ago, now three people have resigned under this. The question I haven’t seen asked is “how much ’severance’ pay is Easley getting?” ”

How about Bowles not tying it off when he had the chance? When the UNC Board had to approve the contracts that had been created that did not follow the rules .. it was already stinking then but I’m sure Mikey said to give it a once over and then approve. THAT was the time to reexamine the hiring process, not just the contract. Once they start down the slippery slope, no one has the sense to stop it before its WAY too late. Just keep lying and covering it up and it should go away. I imagine the N&O deserve credit for not letting this die.

I nominate this as “Post of the week.”
What a name “Irksome Bowels” associated with pucker factor. NCSU has been taking it up the ass for sometime now. It’s all tied in together. LOL

I have changed my avatar in honor of this “train wreck” of an administration. 🙂

I had to chuckle at “irksome bowels”…if nothing else, Statefansnation can sure come up with some nicknames.

From all I hear, despite his involvement in this mess, Larry Nielson is well respected on campus and among the faculty. Let’s not paint with such a broad brush that we smear the otherwise good along with the bad…

McQueen Campbell, on the other hand, I’ve heard absolutely nothing good about…I hope he ends up doing hard time.

    NC STATE = KORRUPT with a “K”

Weed out all these snakes. I do find it ironic that Fowler is now the safest of everyone for now. Guess he’ll be kicking back at Lake Gaston for the next couple of years.

Sometimes you have to a fire to clear out the dead wood. The circumstances of this situation are terrible, it is a stain on the university, and all parties involved should be ashamed of themselves. However, NC State University needed new leadership at the top, and hopefully the BOT will move in a fresh direction. We need leaders who are looking to innovate and make NC State on of the top universities in the nation, not concern themselves with helping out their friends, glad-handing politicians, and making themselves rich in the process. Oblinger was the wrong choice from the start, no question. My sincere hope is that we launch a truly national search and find someone with the spirit of progress and acheivement that has been so lacking in recent years.

And maybe we will get lucky and whoever takes over will remove the last piece of dead wood in Fowler.

^ “I do find it ironic that Fowler is now the safest of everyone for now. Guess he’ll be kicking back at Lake Gaston for the next couple of years.”

I’m wondering what all this means for ole Fowler. Obviously, he’s safe at the moment. And for the near future, the school will probably want to lay low and avoid controversy (although, firing the worst AD in the history of athletics is not something I would call “controversial”!) But still, he is probably safe, for a little while anyway.

I’m hoping once all the snakes have been removed, that their replacements will care enough about athletics to get rid of Fowlup. Worst case, the new group is the same as the old group, and they allow Lee to stay. Best case, they actually care about athletics. Assuming they do, does anyone care to venture a guess as to how long it would take for them to act on removing Lee? How long do we need to wait for the current storm to pass?

The good news is we don’t need a new football coach. And we’re set at basketball coach for at least a year or two, maybe more if all continues to go well. So I’m OK with Fowler for a couple of years anyway. I just want him gone by the time we need to hire a new coach in a major sport, whenever that is.

  7. GAWolf 06/08/2009 at 5:59 PM #

I’d say Fowler hates these latest developments. Oblinger, after all, is the one who gave him an award on the heels of some of the worst performances by NC State athletics in decades.

Oblinger was Fowler’s lifeline. When a disinterested Chancellor takes a look at the athletic departments on-field numbers, untainted by a personal relationship with the man himself, he’ll be gone soon enough.

I think it’s ironic as HELL that Bowles said today that it’s good that State put some sunshine on the situation and distance itself with Easley when he himself was put in his office as President in violation of the State’s Sunshine law. Jesus. These politicians have zero shame. Zilch.

See the story I linked in a prior post if you missed it.

  8. OwenDorm83 06/08/2009 at 8:23 PM #

Oblinger says: “I am (resigning) because that is what leaders do when the institutions they lead come under distracting and undue public scrutiny.”

OwenDorm83 says: Undue public scrutiny my big ole’ butt. Mr. Oblinger has obviously lost touch with reality. I mean, guy, wake up and smell the roses! You guys got caught with your hands in the “political favor” cookie jar. Now, deal with it.

  9. Clarksa 06/08/2009 at 8:26 PM #

”The question I haven’t seen asked is “how much ’severance’ pay is Easley getting?”

The funny thing is that NC State would have spent a lot less money if this situation had just stayed quiet and Mary had gone about doing her “job.”

  10. Cosmo96 06/08/2009 at 8:28 PM #

The interim Chancellor seems like a great fill. I wonder how long he will remain on board? I’m sure that, in true NC State fashion, he will be shuffled out before he can accomplish anything of any consequence that will be positive for the University, only to be replaced by an internal hire who will continue on with Oblinger-like numbskullery for years to come.

  11. choppack1 06/08/2009 at 9:06 PM #

While hope does spring eternal, last time we placed a guy who was barely getting the job done, w/ well, someone who is not coming close.

I really, really hope that this is a new beginning for NC State. However, I kind of doubt it. We’re NC State, and dammit, if we can screw it up, we will.

We’ll probably bring Les Robinson back to be Chancellor.

  12. BJD95 06/08/2009 at 9:18 PM #

I am very, very confident that the next chancellor will be an outsider.

  13. WolftownVA81 06/08/2009 at 10:06 PM #

If the BOT fires Easly who merely accepted the job and pay raise, how can it not fire the individuals responsible for her hire and the big pay raise? McQueen is gone but the other two are still on the payroll. Nielsen may be a good guy, but he got paid the big bucks to make good decisions – which he did not. Oblinger has no leg to stand on whatsoever. He made bad decisions and then lied about it. He should also be fire immediately.

  14. choppack1 06/08/2009 at 10:24 PM #

BJD – it kind of puts one key hiring that is causing so much division and angst in perspective doesn’t it? A candidate is presented w/out key qualifications, but hired, solely based on potential and what the “name” can bring.

I’m going to erase “State” from my diploma, draw an arrow from “University” to the front of “North”, and pencil in “of”.

  17. sautz 06/09/2009 at 1:06 AM #

Erskine is a lot of things but he is not stupid. There will be a lot of media attention on this hire. I think he goes national for a big name to avoid any perception of impropriety.
Besides, it can’t get much worse than Chan. Oblivioius, can it?

  18. Alpha Wolf 06/09/2009 at 8:04 AM #

^ He’s still going to be a professor, and thus a force on the Faculty Senate, correct? Seems like the dead wood is still there, waiting and lurking for quieter times.

Plus que ca change, plus que c’est la meme chose change.

  19. WolftownVA81 06/09/2009 at 12:40 PM #

Enough info has been made available in the media for the faculty to become well aquainted with the circumstances surrounding these ridiculus personnel decisions and the deception that followed. If the Faculty Senate doesn’t have the balls to take up this issue, then they do not have the University’s interest at heart and one would have to ask, what good are they? If they serve no useful purpose, they should be dissolved.

  20. legacyman 06/09/2009 at 3:48 PM #

I can’t wait to hear from the Faculty Senate. Surely their dander has been raised at the thought of the rampant corruption that has dominated our University for too long…oh wait, they are part of the problem…rats.
