Bob Holliday gone from WRAL-TV

Folks around Raleigh might have known or recognized this recent development…but those outside of the Triangle would have no reason to know if they aren’t told – WRAL-TV5’s Bob Holliday has ‘retired’. His last broadcast was Friday night.

The station is positioning the development as follows:

Bob Holliday, whose thoughtful approach has marked his work at 18 Final Fours and numerous other major events, is leaving WRAL after 28 years of anchoring and reporting.

Holliday has accepted a voluntary severance package offered by Capitol Broadcasting Company, which owns the television station.

It’s funny…I never took to Holliday as I grew up watching him/WRAL. It wasn’t just that it would be next to impossible for anyone to compete with/follow Tom Suiter; it was that Holliday seemed to have some light blue bias that he was fighting to hide. Imagine my ‘surprise’ when I read the following in WRAL’s article:

A University of North Carolina graduate, Holliday spent 10 years with the Village Companies, as news and sports director at WCHL radio. His time there included several years on the Tar Heel Sports Network.

He interviewed Dean Smith soon after Smith retired from North Carolina in 1997 – the only local television reporter to be granted an interview at the time.

Very recently, Holliday was credited with making a snide remark at the NC State Football Reunion where he commented to the effect that “there are no players here from an ACC championship team unless they played over 30 years ago”. That didn’t go over well with the natives.

But, in the end…Bob Holliday’s ‘legacy’ will always be that he was the “other guy” to that good old boy from Rocky Mount, Tom Suiter. We discussed Suiter’s departure from channel five in this entry that you will enjoy.

I am crying baby blue tears over this event.

Actually, no I’m not. This area still has plenty of Tar Hole media homers and won’t miss this one a bit. They darken the skies of the Triangle like the Passenger Pigeons of yore.

The thing I always found odd was that Holliday was actually the top guy in the WRAL sports department… he outranked Suiter.

And yes – Holliday’s bias was always quite evident. I never really enjoyed watching his broadcasts, partially because he came across as condescending and “snarky”. Of course, condescending and unc-ch DO go hand-in-hand…

Don’t let the door hit you in your light blue rear “Bob”. Maybe you and “Woody” can hang out together now.

People watch local news any more?

    Really?

With the advent of the web, sitting in front of a television at 6:00pm to hear the roll call of crimes, fatal accidents and tax increases dropped off of my radar. I get that in about two minutes of of the Internet.

Sure, they have two minutes or so of sports, but rare are the times it is worth it to tune in.

TV news is rapidly turning into an anachronistic archive of the late 20th century. With things like ABC’s news app on the iPhone where you choose the story you want to watch as opposed to the serial exposition you get in front of your set, the time for broadcast news is drawing closer and closer to an end.

Same thoughts as Alpha Wolf. The industry is dying fast. IMO, you could see one local newscast for each network that is broadcast throughout the state. Kind of like the consolidation of the N&O and Clt Obs.

Um, Bob. If you’re the Carolina fan and graduate that they say you are, I’m sure you’re aware that the same is true for Carolina’s football team.

When you live in glass houses…….

P.S. Glad he’s gone. I’m one of the holdouts that still watches the local news, in addition to what’s on the web.

I haven’t watched local news in probably 10 years. Sensationalist, mind-numbing drivel. With the advent of the internet and the blogosphere, I don’t care about watching the sports, even.

I watch some local news (in CLT) early in the AM, after that, I watch the TWC Ch14 when I want to hear who was robbed or shot.
I’m one of the hold outs that still reads the print rag everyday, The Daily tarholes, Southern Edition (Observer) usually just to see how mad I can get.
