Matt Hill = National Champion

Congratulations 2009 NCAA Golf Champion, Matt Hill. This title caps one of the greatest runs by an NC State athlete in the university’s history. Hill previously won 7 tournament titles this year including the ACC and NCAA Regional titles.

Hill is the first North Carolina State player to win the individual championship. Past medalists include Tiger Woods (Stanford, 1996), Phil Mickelson (Arizona State in 1989, ’90 and ’92) and Jack Nicklaus (Ohio State, 1961).

With just eight holes remaining in the race for medalist at the NCAA Division I men’s golf championship, North Carolina State’s Matt Hill trailed by two strokes.

Instead of panic, it was time to take control.

Hill made three birdies down the stretch and then played keepaway with the lead to capture the top individual prize Thursday at Inverness Club.

“I’m pretty pumped up, that’s for sure, and a little bit relieved at the same time,” Hill said after shooting his third consecutive 2-under 69 to finish at 6-under 207.

The tall Canadian started the day tied for the lead with Georgia’s Russell Henley, who lapsed to a 75 to finish at 213. Starting on the 10th hole, Hill played the first 10 holes in even par and by that point trailed TCU’s Tom Hoge by two shots.

By the way…a big thank you to the Carolina Hurricanes for Hill!

Hodge was the ACC POY, before him Rodney Monroe, and before him DT…so he was good despite the talent and coaching we had at the time…

^ Yes, POY is what I’d hang my hat on. He was also a player who had the intangible leadership qualities and ability/willingness to do everything well.

Hodge is the only pure elite scorer (as opposed to mere shooter) that we had since Monroe.

“Hodge is the only pure elite scorer (as opposed to mere shooter) that we had since Monroe.”

Tony Grundy was an elite scorer. His senior year he was sensational. In fact, I believe he was a far superior player than Hodge. A better shooter and equally as good passing and on the boards. I used to say that Grundy had the best baseline post up move in the ACC his last few years, bigs included. He never gets mentioned as one of the NC State greats, which is a shame.
