State to play in ’09 Glenn Wilkes Tourney?

Relevant Background:

  1. April 23rd: Lowe in Media; Pack playing in Hawaii
  2. April 24th: Katz Correction, no Hawaii for Wolfpack

In this article today we ran across the following:

Look for N.C. State to be a part of the eight-team field that will participate in the third annual Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach from Nov. 19-22. No contracts had been signed as of early last week, but the Wolfpack was in negotiations to host one home game before playing three more at Daytona’s Ocean Center Arena.

This will take you to the Glenn Wilkes Tournament’s home page.

The 2008 tournament included Utah and Ole Miss.

We’ve done a little research and *think* that we have identified a pool of possible participants in this year’s tournament. They are as follows: Akron, Auburn, Austin Peay, UCF, Drake, Howard, IUPUI, Niagara.

That’s a weak enough field (current and historically) that I’m surprised Sendek hasn’t participated yet. Hopefully, it’s televised, at least.

The N and O had lots of interesting stuff this morning. Good Sunday reading material in the sports page.

If the above teams comprise the pool for this tournament, it’s one the Pack should avoid. Did you hear me, Jed? You just don’t build a quality program competing in events like this one. And who would want to go down to Florida that weekend anyhow? We play Virginia Tech in football on November 21, probably the biggest game on the schedule at that point.

My gut feeling is that this may be another tournament made for ESPNU, letters synonomous with Wolfpack basketball. Pray for no tv if we are stupid enough to sign on.

Why don’t we just get ECTC, Shaw, Bridgewater, W&L, Elon, Mercer, and Wingate to come to Raleigh for a nice little tournament and save on the travel expense?

Only UIPOOI is a sticky, stanky challenge. What’s the deal here?

    From the same article:

“Because of turnover on the Board of Trustees, N.C. State has not taken action on contract extensions for any of its coaches, including Sidney Lowe, athletics director Lee Fowler said.”

Thanks for reminding everybody about the turmoil going on in our administration, Lee. It had fallen off the front page for a few days.

Looks about right to me. 1 other BCS school and they could care less about basketball (about like us).

many of these teams played in the post season and all except Howard would be a good upgrade over many of the teams we played last year.

I suppose we are ready to play UCLA in the first 5 games next season.. this will be good for the team.

Any holiday event where WE are the headliner isn’t worth playing in!

Well we have that Old Spice banner, they can’t take that away from us…..

Also, look for some not-so-good news to come out soon.Carry on…………….

  10. BJD95 06/01/2009 at 9:50 AM #

Well, it has been a few weeks, so we are due for some bad news.

  11. McPete 06/01/2009 at 10:06 AM #

    Bubba,
what kind of bad news? SL and/or LF contract extensions? as long as its not alfy hill committing to unc i’m alright.

  12. SternWolf 06/01/2009 at 11:13 AM #

“Also, look for some not-so-good news to come out soon.Carry on…………….”

Bubba, obviously don’t want you to compromise your sources, etc… but if you could be a bit more specific, as to what kind of news (basketball? injury?) and/or timeframe (day? Week? Month?) that would be very helpful.

As always, thanks to Bubba and any others who have news and are willing/able to share it.

“What the hell is with you people. You bitch about how pathetic out OOC SOS was last year so we schedule a tourny that will help out alot and you still bitch.”

How will this help our pathetic schedule?

And there is nothing more irritating than someone claiming to know information but not willing to share it.
If you do not want to say then just shut up about it.

Lance Stephenson to Pack? Any chance?

  19. kevirose 06/02/2009 at 8:05 AM #

so what was this bad news anyway?

  20. tvp1 06/02/2009 at 11:24 AM #

Disagree with most of the comments. The RPI numbers for most of these teams weren’t bad. This will be an improvement over scheduling additional games against the NC Central’s of the world.

  21. Dr. BadgerPack 06/02/2009 at 12:30 PM #

RPI Numbers aside- let’s just ignore that for a while. Any opportunity to play multiple games, early in the year, in a short span of time is good for the development of THIS particular team. No fewer than 4 freshmen will see significant playing time this year. Paired with two sophomores (well, 3 if you count Thomas). It’s just good experience for a young team. If this team had established All-ACC talent, and the freshmen were going to play supporting, “gravy” roles, then fine; this is a bad tourney. But in the present situation, it is a great way to throw them in the fire, get their feet wet, and idenitfy weaknesses and immediately apply it to real-game situations.

Put another way for those who like this angle– with such a young team, you’ll find out in a 3/4 day span if Lowe can coach.

  22. 61Packer 06/02/2009 at 1:24 PM #

I don’t need a 3/4 day span to find out if Sidney Lowe can coach.

5-11, 4-12, 6-10 in the ACC. 10th, 12th and 10th in the final ACC standings.

What else do you need to know?

  23. Dr. BadgerPack 06/02/2009 at 1:28 PM #

^Excellent way of dissmissing the other relevant content of my post. Kudos. You are a master debater.

I won’t even bother to look it up, but I can guarantee there are excellent coaches who put up those records, %-wise in their first years.

But that wasn’t even my point. The point is, this tourney is a good idea for this particular team. I need to know why it is not.

  24. 61Packer 06/02/2009 at 5:18 PM #

Why would you want to play IUPUI, Niagara, Drake, Howard, UCF, Austin Peay, Akron or Auburn in basketball? What does THIS PARTICULAR TEAM gain from this? Why, the idea that this is the level they need to be competing at, that’s what. Set goals low. Limbo lower now, limbo lower……….how low can you go?

We’re never going to be anybody until we start playing somebody. We’ve got a 21,000-seat facility and we’re bringing in the dregs of Division One every season in non-conference; now someone has the idea we need to race off to Daytona and play basketball, and on the same weekend our football team is in Blacksburg.

No, I just don’t get it. Sorry.

  25. Dr. BadgerPack 06/02/2009 at 5:48 PM #

“Why would you want to play IUPUI, Niagara, Drake, Howard, UCF, Austin Peay, Akron or Auburn in basketball?”

246, 50, 166, 330, 167, 150, 95, 63. Those are RPI’s for potential teams (Sportsline). Two fall outside the acceptable range. Three at least fall in metrics used to separate bubble teams (see VaWolf’s– i think!– work on the bubble). That isn’t horrible competition.

“What does THIS PARTICULAR TEAM gain from this?”

Young team, tournament format, NAH. No benefit at all. Just don’t play one. Most tournaments are filled. Why NOT play one (especially, if the rule still holds, such events qualify as 1 game on the schedule).

“We’re never going to be anybody until we start playing somebody. ”

Well, yes. But before that, start beating anybody. And to that end, this is excellent preparation considering other available options. Crappy low/mid majors don’t get invited to these events; these are most often projected top 3 teams in there respective conferences.

“We’ve got a 21,000-seat facility and we’re bringing in the dregs of Division One every season in non-conference”

Until NC State is able to host an exempted event, 3 games versus 1 renders this a non issue. Oh, Florida bites. They come to town. Sure would be nice to get some extra games in before we play ’em.

“now someone has the idea we need to race off to Daytona and play basketball, and on the same weekend our football team is in Blacksburg.”

Absolute non-issue. NC State has one of the largest alumni bases in the country; more than enough to fill 20 stadia. Furthermore, one sport should not dictate what the other is allowed to do. Heck, let EVERYONE go to Blacksburg. Let State play a tourney in the most hostile “neutral” court imaginable- can’t hurt.

“No, I just don’t get it. Sorry.”

Look, it’s not personal. It’s the option of playing 1 game or 3 games. And from a development standpoint, I’ll take the bigger number versus a game against UCLA-ish teams.

The bottom line is, this isn’t a bad event. It certainly beats the 4-team field BCA classics, etc., we used to play in and absolutely trumps any 1 game that can be gotten at this juncture.

Sheesh. Had to open a beer before 6. Now I have to have 2 before the old lady gets here so they even out. Thanks. 🙂
