Report: John Wall to Kentucky [Update 10:10am]

Thank God the circus is over.

Slam magazine is reporting that John Wall will sign a letter of intent to play basketball for John Calipari at the University of Kentucky.

Link to ACCNow

Considered the best point guard prospect in the country, Wall went to three different high schools in five years in the Triangle. He exploded onto the national recruiting scene two summers ago at a camp in Philadelphia.

He was first pursued by the Wolfpack, then Duke joined the fray and even UNC’s Roy Williams made a late call to Wall during the Final Four. Instead of staying home, Wall apparently went with Calipari.

This would be the second time in three years Duke has lost out on a top-flight recruit, late in the signing process, to Kentucky (forward Patrick Patterson in ’07).

This is good for the Cliftons, Wall’s family, John Calipari and most definitely the folks at Nike. I am not sure that this is bad thing for NC State. (Of course, had Lee Fowler and Jim Oblinger not found a way to *#$#-up the hiring of John Calipari three years ago then Calipari would have probably already secured Wall’s commitment to play at NC State. But, nothing is surprising with our ‘leaders’. Oh…what could have been)

In fact, you will get NO complaints from us about missing on Wall. Heck, with all of the shenanigans and ‘smoke’ surrounding Wall’s recruitment it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that Carolina and Duke would have friggin paid Wall to come to State just so that we could end up back on NCAA probation.

Coach Lowe and staff gave it their best shot and appeared to back away from the youngster in recent weeks/months. Don’t misinterpret that statement – we would have surely taken Wall’s commitment, but there was no reason to spend time and resources stroking this kid – and his entourage’s egos. I think Coach Lowe handled it in the best way possible.

And, I hope that John Wall (and any other local college talent who is not tracking to play at NC State) are not allowed on campus or allowed to participate in pick-up games with our players in our facilities. People who are not a part of NC State, should not get the benefits that NC State offers. Go play at the YMCA if you aren’t running with the Pack.

IMHO, NC State’s program is not currently in a place to have effectively managed John Wall. Had Wall and all of his local influences landed in Raleigh then Coach Lowe’s Wolfpack would have run a tremendous risk of dealing with long term chemistry issues for a phenomenally limited short term gain.

In the end, Kentucky was probably the best fit for Wall and his services. Calipari has shown an ability to succeed on the court while generally controlling kids of Wall’s ilk off the court. Calipari, Coach K, Roy Williams have the credibility and the stature to ‘own’ their programs and know how to both control egomaniacs while demanding things of them. Quite frankly, Coach Lowe and NC State are not yet at that point. ‘Hosting’ Wall for a year was a much bigger gamble than many wanted to publically admit.

This is the link to Scout.com’s article.

Well, the name on the jersey has changed and Calipari switched locations but he’s going to get to coach Wall.

“It was a great job he did the last two years with his guards,” Wall told Scout.com. “I think my relationship with Coach Cal pushed them over. The other coaches did a great job but that relationship got them over.”

By the way…if John Wall doesn’t get some academic items in order, he won’t be playing college basketball for anyone.

Sorry, I kept up with the thing with Cal on this blog and elsewhere and my feeling is that, while there may have been some interest, State was used for financial gain…..Cal’s.
Jed allowed himself to be used and abused.

Wall, who has conducted his commitment like a Barnum and Bailey main attraction, deserves Cal and Cal deserves Wall.

State deserves better than Cal, Wall, or Jed.

^^Agreed. Cal used NC State to get a trip to Raleigh and a bump in pay. We never had him. I’m eager to see how Cal uses these two kids in the backcourt. If Kentucky gets Meeks back they are going to be pretty scary.

  3. BJD95 05/19/2009 at 3:43 PM #

He definitely had interest, and sold heavy interest (enough that we printed nameplates for him and his entire staff – too bad they never made it to ebay). And yes, he was interested in more money as well.

NC State was interesting enough for him to seriously consider making a move. And it made sense to pretty much everybody who knew Calipari.

First off – I told a friend of mine that Wall and UK were the best fit – and I didn’t mean that in a negative way. Cal has shown that he can create an effective offense for Wall AND that he knows how to manage players like Wall AND he’s proven he’s a winner (no matter how you feel about the guys he brings in.)

One of the main reasons why Wall was a good fit at Kentucky and a bad fit here was that for all of his incredible talent, he’s yet to prove that he’s a winner. His high school record this year is really disconcerting. As a result, I had no reason to think NC State would improve upon Word of God’s record had he come here – and well, as Statefans so aptly put it – we’re just not ready for a player like him.

I have to give it to Wall – his whole recruiting saga hinted of someone who was indecisive and immature. However, this decision is perfectly rational – and I think it’s a good decision on his part.

As for Coach Cal – I think he’s a great coach. However, I don’t think that there’s any way that we wouldn’t at least have had an NCAA investigation if he were our HC. And given how our inept administration responds to such things, there’s no telling what would have happened.

(I’ll put it this way – if I hired a guy like Cal – I’d have someone shadowing him all the time. They wouldn’t be micromanaging him, but I woudldn’t want to be “surprised” by his actions.) Of course, when your primary targets were his 2 best players – let’s just say that it’s kind of throwing stones in a glass house at this moment.

You are all welcome to your opinion of what happened with Cal regardless of the fact that the truth is that we could have easily bagged him had we executed the discussions differently.

  6. gopack968 05/19/2009 at 3:49 PM #

“… if John Wall doesn’t get some academic items in order, he won’t be playing college basketball for anyone.”

Care to add detail? That was the story I heard from some fairly reliable sources. Apparently CJ may have even bigger problems in this arena.

  7. JeremyH 05/19/2009 at 4:03 PM #

BJD95, maybe we can find Calipari 20 years from now in an Irish pub, buy him a couple pints, and let him explain what happened : )

I am of the opinion that he felt that nc state was not a step up, and did not have the in-built recruiting advantage that he wanted. nc state was a risk, and two elite status teams being in that league contributed to that risk. I’m not convinced that Jed is solely to blame for not completing that transaction. My .02, of course.

  8. GoldenChain 05/19/2009 at 4:19 PM #

gopack968, no problem now, their in the SEC! Academic bastion of college athletics!

SFN, thanks, I’ll keep my opinion.
After all, ‘we could had had Cal had we executed differently’, ‘we could had kept V if we had executed differently’, ‘we could have had Barnes if we had executed differently’, (fill in the blank) ‘if we had executed differently’, is there a theme going on here?

I know that most of you SFN guys are high powered business/lawyer kind of guys and not a linthead like me (TXT80, MBA88). All I know is that of the tens of millions of dollars worth of deals I’ve put together over the last 29 years (now that I think about it, more $ than that) anytime there were two willing partners things never turned on a foot-in-mouth or a wrong word etc.
And yes, I’m the world’s foremost expert on my opinion, and that’s my opinion. Cal would have worked through it if he really wanted to come to State. He wanted big $$$$ more than he wanted anything, and that’s what he got.
If his ego was that tender then we are certainly better of without him.

“I do feel a little sorry for the 3 poor souls on the Kentucky Basketball team that are about to lose thier scholarship. If I was a parent of one of those kids, I would be freaking mad as fire.”

If Cal yanks their scolly do they still have to sit a year?
If then that rule needs to be abolished.

  10. Classof89 05/19/2009 at 4:44 PM #

Count me in with the camp of those who think Cal is a sleaze (dating back to his UMass days) and I’d rather suck for 10 more years than have someone like that running the show here. TOB shows you can take the classy high road and still be successful. If people like Cal are who we have to get in bed with to be a top 10 program, I’ll pass, thank you…

  11. whitefang 05/19/2009 at 5:32 PM #

Calipari may be a sleaze, and I may not personally like him, but I would have LOVED it had he come to State. I think the probation stuff is BS – especially with a competent administration. KY sure as hell does not want to be on probation again, but they do want and expect to be one of the top programs in college bball.
For those of you who say Cal would have jumped ship on us anyway – MAYBE, but so what? Without Fowler screwing the pooch, we would be finding out that answer at least. Do you realize we were once one of the top programs in college basketball, and had we hired a coach as good as Cal 4 years ago we likely would be at least looking for a house in that neighborhood again? Now we are happy we missed on Wall – PLEASE. I accept that we may not be “ready” for a John Wall at this stage of our program, but if Roy and K wanted him, I would have liked to have seen us try to get ready. Anybody wish we had of gotten Lawson?
And I am ready to be surprised next year by Sid’s team. Please surprise me!

  12. GAWolf 05/19/2009 at 6:07 PM #

You’re more likely to catch Cal at a doughnut shop than a pub. The man is addicted to center-less rings of doughy goodness.

And NC State has all it needs to help a good recruiter recruit. Everything. And I cannot stress enough the word: “everything.” Cal certainly didn’t walk away from our offer because he didn’t think he could recruit quality athletes to Raleigh.

  13. ldr of the pk 75 05/19/2009 at 6:49 PM #

Good riddance John Wall and the baggage you will drag with you. IMO he wasn’t worth the disruption he might have had on our program. We’ve already had one of those year before last.

With Herbs closet finally cleaned, with Sids own players as a nucleus to start, and with the recruits we did land, we have a chance to improve well enough. I’m not sure why, but I feel better about our Basketball program now than a couple of months ago.

  14. StateFans 05/19/2009 at 6:52 PM #

Count me in with the camp of those who think Cal is a sleaze (dating back to his UMass days) and I’d rather suck for 10 more years than have someone like that running the show here.

Well, you have gotten your wish for the last three years. Only seven more to go.

  15. Rufftown Wolf 05/19/2009 at 7:16 PM #

    G. Henderson hired an agent today so with the way things are shaping up the ACC is going to up for grabs. State has a chance to be in the mix. Write this down Scott Wood will be All-ACC before he leaves. I watched his Junior year highlights on Youtube this guy is a serious scorer and has a high basketball IQ. I can’t wait for him and Mays to get back on the court together. I also saw some of Richard Howell Highlights he reminds me of taller Larry Johnson, he has a real quick first step and finishes well around the rim.

  16. 61Packer 05/19/2009 at 8:11 PM #

Even with Gerald Henderson gone, Duke, as long as Coach K is running the team, will remain far superior at almost every level compared to NC State. It is truly amazing to me how many people on here believe State will have a good basketball season in 2009-2010. Maybe I’ve missed something for the past three seasons; maybe we’re on the verge of a breakout season next year. Yeah, that’s it! Just wait ’til next season!!!

  17. Rufftown Wolf 05/19/2009 at 9:23 PM #

Duke is on a downward spiral. I don’t see Slinger taking over. I do see Tracy Smith building on his game. UNC will be OK. If Teague doesn’t come back for Wake they will be OK. Clemson with the Brooker brothers will be good. Other than that I don’t really see any great teams. So with the players Sid has coming in and three experienced PGs we will win more games.

  18. 61Packer 05/19/2009 at 10:27 PM #

There aren’t going to be any great basketball teams in the ACC next season, I agree, but there will be a few good ones, plus an over-abundance of mediocre teams. If Lowe does his best job next season, we’ll be in the thick of the hunt for best of the mediocre. If Lowe does what he’s done the past 2 seasons, we’ll be a lot worse than mediocre. And if Lowe does his worst job, the lunatic fringe will be blamed by those who cry, one more time, “Give him another year.”

    DD, SOS.

  19. PACK-ATTACK 05/19/2009 at 10:38 PM #

I’m glad Cal is NOT in Raleigh. He’s a sleazeball and his integrity has been questioned on the recruiting trail on plenty of occassions…. it’s only a matter of time before he’s going to cross the line. Wall is a miss for sure, but I’m more than satisfied with the class Sid’s got coming in…. most seem to be high integrity kids too, which is never a minus.
    GO PACK!

  20. LRM 05/19/2009 at 11:39 PM #

“Who needs Wall anyway? We’ve got Lowe and Towe. Bring it on!”
“We have Lowe and Towe?? What are we bringing on?”

    High blood pressure.

  21. Daily Update 05/20/2009 at 8:06 AM #

Why is Cal sleazy? What has he ever done? What NCAA violations has he committed? The stuff at UMass had to do with a player receiving benefits (jewelry) from an agent. Cal had nothing to do with it. Cal was at Memphis for almost a decade IIRC, so it isn’t like the NCAA hasn’t had enough time to investigate that program.

His graduation rate at Memphis is very similar to that of Herb Sendek’s. It might even be better. Essentially every kid that has stayed four years has graduated.

I will never figure out what people have against Cal. We should have hired him after year 7 or year 8 of Sendek’s tenure.

  22. Daily Update 05/20/2009 at 8:12 AM #

I maintain that Cal was a perfect fit for our job. IMO, he is incredibly similar to a previous beloved head coach at NC State. From his background to his personality to the fact that he wins everywhere he goes at the college level. He wins at places that are considered too tough to compete with the top programs. Again, there wasn’t a more perfect coach out there for NC State – a place many say is too tough to expect to win at a Duke or UNC level that has a fanbase with expectations that are way out of line.

Cal would have made us one of the top programs in the nation and he would have done it with the same players our current head coach recruited, but couldn’t convince to come to NC State.

Here is part of an article on Cal:

Memphis has always been a place with high expectations. The school used to go to NITs regularly back when it was known as Memphis State, and there were Final Four appearances in 1973 (Does 21 for 22 ring a bell?) and 1985 (the only one to crash the Big East Party). Remember when The Pyramid was college basketball’s state-of-the-art building? It has already come and gone, replaced by the glamorous FedExForum. Don’t ever think Memphis isn’t serious about basketball.
    more stories like this

The problem is, some people think Memphis has been too serious about basketball over the years, ignoring, among other things, you know, school. And the fact is that the basketball graduation rate B.C. (Before Cal) was abysmal. Calipari keeps pointing out that 15 of the 17 kids who’ve made it to their senior year in his tenure have graduated, but people still think of Memphis as an outlaw institution.

Of course, the truth is that Caliparis is, and always has been, very comfortable in the role of the scrappy outsider. This is no (Daddy) George Bush, born, as Ann Richards famously said, standing on third thinking he’d just hit a triple. Cal is the grandson of Ellis Island immigrants whose own parents were fortunate to finish high school.

“I grew up in a house where you didn’t think about being a doctor or a lawyer,” he says. “It was, ‘Payday’s on Friday.’ “

  23. Noah 05/20/2009 at 8:52 AM #

Calipari didn’t come here, therefore Calipari is dirty, overrated as a coach, hates babies and puppies, thinks baby blue is a great color, is gay, worships Satan, voted for Bill Clinton, dodged the draft, burns flags, eats his own boogers, double-parks, has unpaid parking tickets, and is responsible for the designated hitter and astroturf. Oh, and he hates Christmas.

John Wall isn’t going to come here, therefore he’s got too much baggage, he’s not a real leader, he’s a bad student, he’s on the take, he’s signed with an agent, he’d disrupt the chemistry, and he’d probably have sex with an assistant coach’s wife or another player’s girlfriend. And he hates Christmas AND Thanksgiving!

Why do we think we’re going to be better next year? Because we’re State fans! Kyle Singler sucks, but Tracy Smith is going to be a FORCE! WooOOOoOoOOo! We go through this_EVERY_god durn mudder-flipping bunghole lapping year.

You can check out any time you like, but you can never…ever…ever leave.

    Ever.

  24. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 8:55 AM #

Again, Lee NOT getting Calipari is one of the best moves he’s made, mistake or not. Calipari would have been here for a couple years, recruited some great players, got us somewhat deep into the tournament. Then Kentucky would have come calling, he would have jumped ship at NCSU, just like he did at Memphis, he would have taken all his good players with him or they would have transferred just like they did at Memphis. All the recruits he had coming to our school would have decommitted and we would be in the EXACT same spot, if not worse, than when he got here in the first place. Instead we got a coach who loves his school, isn’t using us as a stepping stone, does things the right way, brings in 4 year talent and has shown an amazing ability to recruit top level talent even with the deficiencies that this program has faced in 20 years. Ya’ll can sit here and whine and cry about not having Calipari but we’re MUCH BETTER OFF without him ever coming here. It doesn’t matter how great of a coach he may be, if he’s just going to jump ship and take EVERYTHING with him, he’s not worth it.

  25. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 9:13 AM #

(i submitted this but didn’t see it, so i’m doing it again, just delete if it’s doubled)

Anyone who says that Cal and his recruiting methods aren’t shady, either has no idea what they’re talking about or they’re being intellectually dishonest. Everybody and their brother knows that Cal uses WWW to get recruits to come to his school. To even suggest that Cal’s relationship with WWW and his scheme of getting recruits to come to his school isn’t shady, is simply ABSURD.
