NC State Football Gets A Big Commitment (Updated 9:45am)

NC State received verbal commitments from Chapel Hill’s Rob Crisp and Pete Singer tonight.

Crisp is a 6’8”, 280 lb OT from Chapel Hill High School who is ranked as the state of North Carolina’s top prospect and one of the top 100 players in the country. His offer list was larger than 30 different schools and his ranking with offers from almost everyone, including UNC-CH, Michigan, Georgia, Clemson, Maryland and South Carolina.

Crisp is an NC State fan who evidently comes from a very good family structure. He will be a fantastic addition to Coach O’Brien’s growing stable of stud offensive line recruits over the last two seasons.

SFN was told two weeks ago that the Wolfpack staff felt good about Crisp…and, that it wouldn’t be beyond the realm of possibility to land commitments from ‘two or three’ other Top 200 recruits before the summer camp season. Evidently the staff would like to kick off the recruiting season with with highly touted core of a class on which to build. State is expected to have approximately 20 scholarships to give this season.

^EXACTLY choppack! unx does a good recruiting job one year and the NC trophy already has their name on it. We CLEAN HOUSE the year before and what did you hear? Admittedly both coaches were fairly new at that point but we got a MONSTER class that will pay dividends for years.

Hype doesn’t put checks in the win column.

    Good news!

Any word on Bible’s son at QB? I read he was legit.

TOBtime – I’m not necessarily knocking Butch’s recruiting or his haul from our state. They signed some guys that are think are very talented.

I was thrilled w/ TOBs first class, I was nervous when Butch pulled in a very good haul…but we all know the rule – if UNC has a good class, you’ll hear about it.

I’ll be interested in seeing what my local paper says tomorrow.

“Not too many white safety’s around although he could switch positions…and not that it wouldn’t be worth it to get Crisp.”

I’ve seen a couple white SS’s out there that are hot damn bone crushers. So I don’t know about that correlation.

^^That’s a great link. The guy is certainly not a throwaway scholarship just to get Crisp. He will most likely contribute significantly at some point.

old13 – thanks for the link. Good stuff contained therein.

I think my grandma could be a good football player after 2-3 years of coaching by TOB’s staff.

This has gotten me in a lot of trouble in years past, and set up huge let downs in both major sports…but I am having a very tough time not being soooooo damn excited for the next couple years of football!!!!!!

Congrats to TOB and staff. Great Work…Cya April 18th!!

Wow, that’s a great story. I would like to hear more about that.

I’m sure you’ll hear plenty about it. What I know is that Crisp was adopted by the Singers and I think they are LTR holders. In fact, someone told me that they frequent NCSU fan boards (but I can’t remember which ones). The Singers also have a daughter who was or is dating Robbie Leonard.

Reminds me of the time someone told a UNX fan that
“Nothing but whores and football players went to Carowhiner.”
“I’ll have you know my daughter goes to Calorina”
The hell you say. What position does she play?

Kirby Smart, now the Defensive Coordinator for Saban at Alabama, was an ALL-SEC safety his senior year at UGA. They seem like similar style safeties, and have similar athletic ability.

Safeties have to play smart. A smart player with less athletic will likely prove more valuable as your last line of defense than a super athletic kid who runs himself out of plays and blows coverages.

High School recruiting rankings are predominantly about speed, size and how much a kid can bench press. There’s a lot more to playing the game of football than that. Just look at some of our highly ranked recruits from the last decade that came in and never lived up to the hype. More times than not they were knuckleheads who never learned to play the game at the mental level that college requires. They can dominate highschool ball on athletic ability alone… that’s not true at the college level except for a very small group of super-human athletes.

“What is up with the off topic – David Horning post? Did I miss something from another thread?”

What you missed was the post just above mine.

“maybe we should just hold out, get a medium/short term replacement and start grooming TOB to be the AD when he is done with football….”
    `
I lose track of what thread I’m on sometimes and wind up posting to what I just read. The point of the post was to toot David Hornings horn. I often look for the best possible of the most likely actions taken by our AD, Chancellor and BOT. If Horning’s name comes up, I don’t want it to be dismissed out of hand because he currently works for LF. If Horning gets away, we will be losing a very fine administrator with strong ties to our school. OK?

  13. StateFans 04/08/2009 at 12:30 PM #

Jesus…David Horning? Is that a friggin joke?

A ‘fine administrator’? By what criteria? The guy is dumb as a brick.

What the *(#& has David Horning ever done? Oh yea…he went to NC State…so he MUST be qualified.

Horning is quintessential NC State — has he ever worked anywhere else? The best thing David Horning has going for him is that he is friends with Bill Cowher.

Horning has applied for multiple small to midsized AD jobs throughout the country and the moment he gets into interview he loses the job. He was bumbling the C-F renovation so badly the WPC had to step in and take over.

Since you love Horning so much, why don’t you hire him to come work for you? Seems nobody else will.

I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that old Greywolf may be everyone’s favorite, Bob Kennell, in hiding.

Noah, I got the chance to meet Robbie’s Uncle and some other family members in Birmingham. Truly class people and proof that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Football is a game of speed but it has to be REGULATED! This most applies to guys flying around on defense. Overrun a play and you’re done. Hang a step off the receiver, turn on the jets when the ball is released and you make a QB look like a blind man. The speed has to be used in the right way and then it is oh, so deadly.

What GAwolf says is the truth. An early developed male can dominate in high school and never learns technique, work ethic, etc. I’ll take a GOOD athlete who has to work but is smart over any knucklehead supposed superstar. You get 11 guys like that you win a championship.

  15. Alpha Wolf 04/08/2009 at 12:37 PM #

    Safeties have to play smart.

And hit ballcarriers like a human baseball bat.

Seriously, hard-hitting secondaries cause receivers to have a little bit of fear and that can get footballs dropping to the ground.

  16. Noah 04/08/2009 at 12:42 PM #

If you want a white safety who hits like a sledgehammer, wait until you see Brandon Bishop

  17. Alpha Wolf 04/08/2009 at 12:59 PM #

    I’m excited about Bishop.

I love me some Wolfpack D-men that hit so hard you can hear them in section 30.

  18. packalum44 04/08/2009 at 1:03 PM #

IMO the nonathletic or “white” safeties hit harder to compensate for their lack of speed. John Lynch anyone??? BTW don’t be so quick to stereotype. Bradley Pierson, our punter, ran a 4.45 40 at pro day. Colt McCoy is pretty fast… Don Beebee??? Hell, our last safety DaJaun Morgan wasn’t barn burner but he could knock the wind out of opposing receivers at will.

Crisp reminds me of NcNeill, the massive left tackle for San Diego who played at Auburn.

  19. Alpha Wolf 04/08/2009 at 1:08 PM #

We saw how fast Pierson was in the Miami game. He caught the returner from behind. Shocked me to be sure.

    `
    State Fans,
First off, I have no idea who Bob Kennell is so I can only assume that your reference my being Bob Kennel is derogatory.
    `
It’s quite possible that what you say is true, I would have no way of knowing since I don’t sit in on Horning’s or anyone else’s interviews and the interviewers don’t call me to report what was said.
    `
I should have known he was a dumb-ass since he got his undergraduate degree and Masters from such a sucky University.
    `
Here’s a quote from a previous thread you may have missed:
“Please just stop the direct personal attacks and the more indirect ones like this. Address the points of what someone said on this thread if you disagree.”

Now, if we can get some good news soon regarding Fowler being let go or moved into another position (I’d settle for EITHER of those options at this point!) this will be a darn good week for NC State athletics.

And I say that knowing that UNX just won the big one.

    `
More than once he made the tackle in that game and others. Was not afraid to hit. I wanted to see him fake a punt and run it but, alas, that’s not TOB’s style, thank goodness.

Doug Plank and Gary Fencik played for the Bears in the 80’s and were known as “The Hit Men.” Fencik was the defensive captain in the early 80’s. Not bad for a 281st pick in the 1976 NFL draft.
    `
Buddy Ryan’s “46 Defense” was named after Plank’s jersey number.

Don’t be selling out on us honkies.
