Brown Delivers in the Senior Bowl

(above: a montage of great Andre Brown moments in college.)

NC State’s Andre Brown helped his draft stock considerably last night in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, and now heads towards the NFL Combines with the eyes of NFL talent scouts firmly upon him.

Players who helped themselves:

2) North Carolina State RB Andre Brown – Tough runner who showed the ability to break tackles and get into open space where he showed good speed too. I liked the way he ran the ball all night and he even had a nifty catch on a check down.

NFL Fanhouse also added praise for Brown’s performance last night, saying that

RB Andre Brown, NCSU. Brown made some money on Saturday night. He’s battled injures throughout his college career, but when healthy, it’s hard to bring down the 225-pound back. Brown converted a huge fourth-and-1 in the first half, and also ripped off several long runs to sustain drives. And his 31-yard reception — a screen pass set up by a wonderful Quinn Johnson block — showed his ability to maneuver in space.

That Andre Brown is a tough running back with gamebreaking ability, good hands and excellent ability to do damage once he catches the ball is no surprise for NC State’s fans, and now it appears that NFL scouts and pundits are becoming well aware of his abilities as well.  In the right situation — an NFL team with a good blocking unit and the desire to control their football games with a power running attack, Brown may well emerge as a popular star playing on Sundays.

I’m thankful that Andre came into his own over the past year while still wearing Wolfpack Red, and that we got to truly enjoy him this season.

Best wishes, Andre… thanks for the loyalty before setting foot on campus, thanks for the hard work and coachability after you were here, thanks for caring enough to do whatever you could to help your team and your school.

    You did yourself proud.

Great job yesterday and the last four years, it was great being there with a few other state fans cheering him and Anthony Hill on.
By the end of the game people around us were impressed with his play and wondered why we didn’t do better with someone like him on our team!

I’m very happy for Andre – nice to see him showcase a diverse skill set (pass catching ability). Maybe he will sneak into 4th round consideration. Looking forward to seeing him on Sunday.

Glad to hear he did well. His future is bright if he can stay healthy.

If ‘AlphaPack’ who posted this video is the one who ‘made’ it…

…one of the first “information screens” that comes up on the video speaks of his “RUSING yards” [rather than “rusHing”]… ‘Might want to change it.

BJD95 – there was talk amongst the announcers during the game of Andre going in the 3rd and maybe even the 2nd round.

If he shows some of the speed he broke out on Fl. State his freshman year he’ll go higher than that. He could be a lighter version of Stephen Davis – big body but blazing straightline speed. Let’s hope for the best for Andre.

I think he could easily go on the first day. All you have to do is show tape of him running against Southern Miss. a few years ago. I mean, how many backs can claim a 200+ rushing in a game? To follow up that week, he had around 180 against a tough FL St. defense. He’s a good back. NFL drafts are funny though…he could slip to 4th or 5th or be as high as 2nd. Who knows…good luck Andre!

It would be awesome to see Andre come off the board on Day One. I’ll certainly be rooting for him.

Likely 3rd round. He could rise with a good combine and good interviews, and the good news for Andre is he likely will land on a good team that can work him into a rotation.

Another good thing is that due to the fact he was in platoon most of his career, his mileage is relatively low. It may cost you records on the college level, but in the long run it is in a running backs best interest to log fewer carries on this level.

And in reference to injury problems I have seen on ESPN and others, I recall anything that could be played thru was (shoulder, knee sprain, ankle). Aside from the broken foot against FSU last year he didn’t miss a lot of games.

KC bound in rd 2. If he falls further God forbid, to NE. If it’s day 2 look for Jacksonville or San Diego. TheCOWDOG is ready to put a line out on this.

I would love to see Philip Rivers handing the ball off to Andre Brown on Sundays.

Andre would make a nice complement to Sproles in SD. But this Bronco fan doesn’t want to see it, damn it!

Ya know BJ the only reason I don’t see Den in on this is the change on the sideline. And then there’s GB, N/S running. But AB’s hands are what is going to place him in the right spot. Damn, gotta redo the line. Would like to see him with my Bills, but we’ve got all that with Lynch and Jackson. So, Alpha let’s go with SD. Sorry BJ.

A hex on Pats no matter what. Problem is he fits that damn team big time.

I’d bet on the Jets or Colts. They both need a power element to their offense, are short on running backs, and would want someone who is still a receiving threat. The Saints might need a multi-faceted RB too, depending on the McAllister situation.

I’d love my Eagles to pick him in the 3rd round, but I think they will focus more on O-line. They may trade out of the second though, espeically if they use both #1’s, and if they get a second third rounder he’d be a logical pick.

Somehow by editing this post I completely screwed it up…

Fans and media tend to overrate how high skill position players will go in the NFL draft. For example, last season was potentially one of the strongest RB classes ever, but only 11 RBs were taken prior to the 5th round. And that is despite the fact that there were 9 extra draft picks (compensatory picks) in the 3rd & 4th rounds.

Here is how they went by round last year:

    1st – 5
    2nd – 2
    3rd – 3
    4th – 1
    5th – 3
    6th – 5
    7th – 3

However, like I said already, that was a bit atypical, due to the large number of quality RBs available. Compare the above to the 2007 draft:

    1st – 2
    2nd – 3
    3rd – 3
    4th – 3
    5th – 1
    6th – 2
    7th – 4

Considering all the RBs taken early last year (8 went by the first pick of the 3rd round), and their collective strong performance, that probably means less need for RBs this year and thus reverting closer to 2007 in terms of where RBs will be drafted.

I would love to see Brown get drafted high, but I would be very surprised if it happens. Fortunately, we know that high draft position is not required for NFL success.

Great to see for Andre. I remember when he came in that he was somewhat overlooked since he had to come a year late and he was coming in at the same time as Toney Baker and we also still had T.A. (I think). I’m glad he was able to put it all together and have a good year this year. I hope he goes high and has a great career.
