Butch Davis No-Shows Shrine Bowl – Practicing for Sun Bowl halftime or taking a math class?

One of the traditions of the annual Shrine Bowl in Charlotte are speeches from the states’ major college coaches.  Yesterday, Tom O’Brien, Steve Spurrier, Dabo Sweeny, and David Cutcliffe were on-hand to give their remarks — but due to the weather, UNC’s Butch Davis missed his turn at the mike.

Thanks to an insider tip, we’ve learned that Davis was finalizing an appearance at halftime in this year’s Sun Bowl in El Paso.

No…seriously…we also heard a rumor that the Chief was taking an emergency match class back on the reservation. We’ll keep checking to see what we learn about the situation.

A high school coach posted the following on Pack Pride:

Scheduled to speak to the two teams today was TOB, Butch, Bill Curry, Steve Spurrier, Dabo Sweeny, and Cuttcliffe (sp). The weather was to bad for Butch to make it.

Cutt. got a jab in while he was talking by saying at least the other coaches from NC could find their way through the fog.

IMHO, TOB gave the best talk today. He didn’t recruit, he spoke about what’s the right thing for young men to do, how to act, and what their work ethic should be. He didn’t mention any of his personal accomplishments, nor his teams, nor did he mention State. Some of the other mixed in some recruiting into their talks. Having heard Butch at the past two Shrine bowls talk about Butch, I wasn’t to sad that he didn’t make it today.

Spurrier found a way to mention that he won the Heisman, won a national championship, played in the pros, coached several all conference and all american QB’s, etc.

Always wondered what “Dances with Sheep” looked like when he was in in “war dress”.

Think Butch is taking Chuck’s approach by shunning the entire high school population in North Carolina?

I’m very surprised that Foulup didn’t require TOB to include some major time in his speech devoted to how fu-silly-tees are the primary factor in having winning athletics programs!

Off Topic, but “”I can’t imagine anyone being better on offense right now,” ASU coach “HWSNBN” said.

Sorry, but HWSNBN goes down in flames again!

Probably because of Shrine Bowl there were no recruits from the Carolina’s hanging around tonite, but there were two Georgians at practice. They hung out with Sam Jones during practice and one of them looked a good 2-3″ taller.

It was fun even though the rain never stopped. The guys are making the most of the extra practices for sure. Met Willie Young, Owen Spencer, Russell Wilson and a couple others. They were happy a few of us crazies showed up.

Alpha Wolf: your obsession with BD, and this second faux controversy in 5 days makes this board seem as petty as so many others. Please regain the high road SFN has been known for.

I always enjoy reading about Chief. Maybe he wanted a fee for talking since he didn’t get a raise this year.

I saw ol Butch at Southpoint today. Him and his son were doing a little shopping. He had on his Duke blue…guess he doesn’t like UNC’s powder blue.

Different uniforms mean more retail sales: maybe he gets a cut.

North Carolina, a valley of humility between two mountains of conceit.

Is it just me? I’m so proud and pleased to have TOB represent NCSU I can hardly stand it. For every BMFD embarrassment, there seems to be an opposite and admirable attribute of Tom O’Brien.

Does Russell Wilson seem like the kind of young man who, in about 25 years, could be where Obama is today? That young man is a leader in every sense of the word, articulate, has character and humility — qualities exemplified by our head football coach.

I guess I didn’t have my glasses on when I saw the end of HWSNBN’s game and got it backwards. Sorry, HWSNBN!

Smile, try taking it in the good humor which it is intended.

And BTW, if you think over-recruiting is a faux controversy, I suggest that you take a look at thewizofodds.com and get the take of a professional sportswriter who thinks that UNC’s recruiting numbers aren’t exactly passing the smell test. Or for that matter, the Pravda of the People’s Republic of Chapel Hill, aka the N&O. They were the wellspring of our entry here, not a breathless repitition of message board posters. Clearly, there is an unusual situation over there and it is one that bears watching. Be sure that a number of high school coaches are.

AW, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
