miamihurricanes.gifHurricanes to use three new starters on defense Saturday

“The defense has only three interceptions this season.

”They’ve had their breakdowns,” Shannon said. “They’ve done some good things and they’ve done some bad things. . . . You have to address things and go from there.”

Miami Playing for Champs Bowl in Orlando Saturday

“Interviews with five bowl officials Tuesday suggest that with a win Saturday at North Carolina State, the most likely destination for UM would be the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. With a loss, UM could end up in the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco. “

Line: Miami -2…Preview Pick: State 34 – Hurricanes 24

“NC State is playing well at the moment, and the team needs this game in a big way. Miami’s freshman quarterback tandem won’t have a whole lot of time to sit in the pocket and make plays in what should be a raucous environment at Carter-Finley Stadium.

I hope Carter Finley is raucous on Saturday … I also hope the team is a little more focused for a post-Thanksgiving game this season … Something tells me they will be

Happy and safe Giving Thanks day all!

While I’m here, I’m thankful for God, family, friends … and SFN giving me a place to obsess over N.C. State 🙂 Thanks for not having kicked me out yet … I’m especially thankful for 41-10!

Ummm…two new starters at CB…Catch the ball Owen!!!

After the games against WFU and UNC I really feel great about our D’s prospect of stopping the run. The biggest concern is that we lost a really good safety and replaced him with Byers & Bobby Floyd. We won’t get to find out where these two are at coming up in run support until KO because UNC was already in obvious pass mode when the injury occurred.

Tackling has to be crisp, Cooper is a really good one.

Maybe a cool weather game will ice these Canes.

  4. LRM 11/27/2008 at 10:30 AM #

Let’s hope it doesn’t ice us (like last year).

Seriously, it’s ridiculous that the ACC continues to force the Duke-Carolina football “rivalry” while screwing State EVERY season with a Thanksgiving weekend home game against a team we don’t care anything about, particularly when much of the student body is unable to attend while far too many season ticket holders can’t make it, leaving Carter-Finley much less raucus than usual. I understand why the ACC does it, because we’re the only school in the conference that doesn’t play its main rival its final game but can still put 75%-plus capacity inside C-F against a Maryland or Miami.

But C-F (or Kenan) would be packed and rowdy on Thanksgiving weekend, regardless of the consequences. Can we really say the same about Wallace Wade Saturday?

Let’s hope we come to play. It’s fun beating Carolina, but let’s not let it define our season like it did last year.

  5. blpack 11/27/2008 at 11:13 AM #

This game is ours for the taking. NO reason not to get it done at home. Yes, they will put up a better fight than the holes, but we’d expect that. It will be a loud crowd and very close to full capcity. Happy Thanksgiving!

I’d like to know why ESPN insists on putting Duke-UNC on national television (even if it is ESPNU) at 3:30 and we end up with a local Raycom game at noon. Duke has nothing to play for, UNC has as much to play for as Miami aka trying to avoid a crappy bowl, and we are the “hottest team in the ACC” looking for bowl eligibility. And it’s at Wallace Wade! I doubt it’ll even be at full capacity. Forget that it’s a “rivalry”, Duke is the worst team in the ACC and UNC is a major disappointment. But the basketball rivalry is good, right? Sorry football fans, the transitive property doesn’t apply here.

    Ok I’m finished, haha

    Happy Thanksgiving All!

It’s kind of a sad personal statement I guess, but I’ll say this, the anticipation of this coming Saturday is making this a very good holiday already. Something has me motivated anyway, I’m even helping the wife get ready for when her side of the family to invades our home later on this evening. Groan.

    Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

  8. Greywolf 11/27/2008 at 12:54 PM #

It’s a great opportunity for NCSU on Saturday… a chance to play against an outstanding football program… a chance to put to rest the saddening loss against UM last year… a chance to solidify our rightful claim to be the best program in NC… a chance to celebrate a win while Carowhiner makes excuses for losing to woeful Duke.

And today a chance to say Happy Thanksgiving to all who contribute to SFN… and as was said above, grateful to SFN for not kicking me off the site… 😉

I am thankful that IF we win on Saturday, we will have a better conference record than UNX. Their fans are still rubbing one out to the thought of having a better record than us…but even if we BOTH win on Saturday, the head-to-head gives us the half-game advantage…which means we’re higher in the conference…we’re the hotter team…and we’ll get a better bowl! GO TO HELL CAROLINA!

I can’t believe the line on this one!! 34-24 STATE?? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the fact that there are finally people out there that realize this team really IS that good. Redout in C-F this Saturday, or what? Hope to see a full house, and a well deserved ‘Pack victory! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and……………….

    41-10!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA

    Duke by 7.

we’re the hotter team…and we’ll get a better bowl! GO TO HELL CAROLINA!

I’ll agree with the opening and closing statements, but not the middle. If UNC beats Duke, then an 8-4 UNC team will get picked before a 6-6 State team. Unfortunately for UNC fans, that still won’t change the scoreboard.

  13. packpowerfan 11/27/2008 at 6:02 PM #

VaWolf, I thought that the majority of the bowls picked based on season finish, conference record, and traveling ability? Even if UNX wins on Saturday, they’ve dropped two of their last three, and the only win would be against lowly Duke. I agree that their overall record will help some, but the fact that they won’t travel well coupled with a stumble at the finish line would be unappealing. At least this would be my thought if I were on a Bowl Committee. Then again, if I were on a BC, UNX wouldn’t go to a bowl if they finished undefeated.

As far as who’s to blame for another Thanksgiving weekend home football game, I’m not convinced it’s the ACC’s fault. I blame the AD, Lee Fouler (sic). I’m a season-ticket holder who will be out of town November 29 but I did sell my tickets to State fans. I really wish State officials would ask us LTR ticket holders how we feel about Thanksgiving weekend games. I’m sick of them.

But at least the Miami game’s NOT on ESPN-Unavailable and is on local tv instead, because now I’ll be able to see it in Boone this Saturday. If I had my way, we’d NEVER be on ESPN-U again. Noon home non-conference games in early September are the pits, especially when they’re scheduled for ESPN-U. The fans deserve better than to sit and roast under a blazing sun (not to mention the players) while ESPN-U shows a game (State vs Akron comes to mind) that most fans can’t get and wouldn’t watch if they could get it.

I’m not promoting Raycom over ESPN, but I’ll take local perspective over the U anytime. And the Raycom games, unlike the U, are usually in HD.

I picked State to win last Saturday and believe we’ll win again this Saturday. Although 6-6 won’t be anything to crow about, it will give us a .500 league record and a shot at an overall winning record with a bowl bid. Ending the football season with a 5-game win streak would be great!

  15. WolftownVA81 11/27/2008 at 6:07 PM #

We are going to do our part Saturday. The missus and I got the two for one deal and will make the 4 hour drive to Raleigh. We’re in 115, the Miami section, but we’ll be dressed in red and making some noise at that end of the field. Got to drive home Saturday night and fly out West Sunday AM but figured this game would be one to remember. Go Pack, beat the U.

This link is to a good article from Jerry Ratcliff in the Charlottesville paper. He has some nice things to say about TOB and the Wolfpack about halfway down. Read to the end to see what he has to say about BD and the UNC quarterback situation.

I think the rule is that the bowls can only pick a team that jumps over another with a 1 loss deficit in their overall record. This would mean that UNX has to lose and we would have to win on Saturday in order to be selected over them. It is possible, and I have a funny feeling that Thadeus Lewis is going to play his ASS off to get this done. My advice to Duke, punch them in the mouth early, and sit back and listen to the air coming out of the tires, just before the wheels fall off of those heels! In addition, I believe that the best record, in the ACC, that CTC ever amssed (with or without Rivers) was 5-3. Am I wrong? I seem to recall beating up up our cupcakes every year and getting beaten by the grand majority of our ACC foes (save for FSU). Happy Thanksgiving to all!

i’d rather be the underdog… should be a great game though! i just hope we don’t get blown out (which could be possible).

  19. redfred2 11/27/2008 at 9:43 PM #

    “i’d rather be the underdog”

Um, that all seems to change when you win ballgames. It has to, you can’t really have it both ways. You’re just temporarily stuck in the old way of thinking anyway travelwolf.

I’ll bet if all we stick together, and work at it hard enough, we can all overcome this fear of being “favored” to win.

  20. statemech 11/27/2008 at 9:51 PM #

I noticed CFN predicts a 22-20 Duke win this weekend, and Dinich foresees a 23-20 Duke win. Predictions are just that, although I can’t help but chuckle.

“Um, that all seems to change when you win ballgames. It has to, you can’t really have it both ways. You’re just temporarily stuck in the old way of thinking anyway travelwolf.

“I’ll bet if all we stick together, and work at it hard enough, we can all overcome this fear of being “favored” to win.”

Good point redfred, we are only favored because we just beat the crap out of some formerly ranked teams. I stepped out of my Wolfpack shoes for a moment and looked from “the U”s point of view.

It ain’t pretty. Playing in ‘their’ house, against the rapidly becoming-the-best QB in the conference, against an OL that opens holes and protects their QB, against a defense that gets better every game and causes turnovers by the half dozen and special teams that are dangerous. Don’t blink, you may miss something. Counting on Owen Spencer dropping a couple of TD passes? Don’t. It’s not hard to see why the Wolfpack is favored.

There are upsets every week and we may get upset. If we can stop looking in the rearview mirror and focus on what’s in front of us, it won’t be this week.

To the Pack: Thanks for helping make this a very Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks for re-igniting the flame in the soul of the all State fans. Let this Saturday be the first of a month full of joyous Saturdays leading to a Happy and victorious New Year.

    GO PACK!

  22. packpowerfan 11/27/2008 at 11:08 PM #

ppack, good post. YES! You’re right, in 2002 we went 5-3 in conference. Of course, well all remember starting 9-0, losing three straight (Maryland, GT, and Wake I believe), then beating the CRAP out of Fla. St. and Notre Dame to finish 11-3.

  23. Ismael 11/28/2008 at 1:31 AM #

greywolf – not sure if this mistype “a chance to put to rest the saddening loss against UM last year…” but we beat Miami last year in OT. On a Hauschka field goal and he ran off like it was a soccer goal kick, that was the most awesome part.

  24. 44rules 11/28/2008 at 4:25 AM #

I think greywolf’s “UM” is a reference to the University of Maryland, not Miami.

^Hauschka – I miss that kid … glad to see he’s doing pretty well for himself though w/ the Ravens (eghhh, the Ravens)

Speaking of kickers, Cjakowski hasn’t really had that bad of a season … It was a shaky start and he missed one against the Holes, but in between he was pretty consistent … He can’t exactly nail one from 50 yds out nor is he the best angle kicker, but he’s been pretty serviceable for us this season when I thought that could be a very weak point this season … Nice job, Cjakowski 😉

Here’s to hoping both Pierson and Cjakowski have saved their best performances for tomorrow against the U

    Go Pack!
