It Was The Sweetest Of Days In Chapel Hill

empty-kenan.jpgIt was the sweetest of days Saturday for Wolfpack fans: a State team whomping on UNC at will, Carolina fans heading back to their cars and the good ole “Wolf” “Pack” cheers rattling off of the aluminum seats that the so-called best fanbase in the country left behind.  Basically State ran Carolina off of their own field and as it happened, their fans left early.

One UNC alum asked me this week why “everyone hates Carolina.”  I answered that that their sense of entitlement and superiority that inevitably makes other fanbases intensely dislike them. Every school in the ACC can name two rivals: their in-state match, and UNC.  Part of that is the undeniable success of UNC basketball — beating the ever-talented Tar Heels is an accomplishment for every ACC school save for Duke — but a lot of it is their fans’ arrogance.

expression_tunnel.jpgWe saw a lot of that arrogance across the blogosphere during the run-up to the game with the usual “Moo U,” “culture versus agriculture,” and redneck comments.  We, of course, have our own putdowns for Carolina, but the reality of it is that Carolina fans largely drive State fans’ intense dislike of the light blue.  The fact is that NC State is a leading research institution whose graduates median salaries are higher than Carolina’s upon graduation, and that NC State prepares its graduates for real jobs, real careers and real success and that fact escapes Carolina Fan.

That’s what drives this rivalry: obnoxiousness mostly from Carolina’s fans.  To be sure, it’s also the proximity, the fact that both schools fans live and work together and that one or the other always suffers at the water-cooler when their team loses.

Personally I respect UNC, but their players do not walk on water and their football team, while improving, is hardly ACC Championship caliber.  If you read my comments on the game during the week here at SFN, I said State would win if they controlled the football and limited turnovers.  Both happened, especially in the turnover battle, and as a result, State won a very well deserved win that was not even as close as the 41-10 score.

As Coach O’Brien said, NC State is now undeniably the best team of the five D1 programs in North Carolina.  One also has to wonder had NC State not lost significant time to injury with a number of its key players if they could have done something special.  Injuries are part of the game and afflict every team, but since Tom O’Brien and his staff are forced to rebuild a program left thin by Chuck Amato, injuries affected State more than most because of the lack of quality depth.

Give O’Brien 2-3 years and he will have NC State back on the national map.  Unlike Chuck Amato, he will have a team not built on smoke and mirrors but instead it will built upon solid fundamentals, sharp focus and crisp execution with players who we can all be proud to represent our University…in other words, more players like Russell Wilson. One also has to think that once back in the Top 25, NC State will be a fixture there and will be able to have more than one special year in which it visits Miami for a BCS game.  And who knows — if the cards fall in the right places, the BCS game might not be the impossible dream it always seems to have been for those who proudly wear the red and white.

That’s the future — but right now, the Wolfpack coaches and players are surely concentrating on defeating a decent Miami team that is coming to Raleigh with every intention of heading to Tampa to play for the ACC title.  State has its own designs and  can make the post-season with a win, so it is fair to expect that this will be an entertaining game that either team can win.  Given the fact that NC State is now playing its best football of the O’Brien era, and that the game is within the friendly  confines of Carter-Finley Stadium, I think that State will indeed win if they do the same things that they did so well in Chapel Hill: control the football and limit turnovers.

happy_fans_in_kenan.jpgWe as Wolfpack fans can and should pack Carter-Finley and play our hearts out as the twelfth man.  Be inside the stadium in your seat by kickoff and  after the half, raise holy hell when Miami has the ball, shush up when the Wolfpack offense is at the line of scrimmage, and generally make life miserable for “The U” — a school whose Wal-Mart fans have their own arrogance issues.

Hat tips for the pics: Maggie Tomei took the stadium shots.  The Expression Tunnel pic was ganked from 850 The Buzz’s Joe Ovies who borrowed it from Steven over at Section Six.

The bar I was at was very similar to Kenan. I say that because at about the start of the 4rd quarter, the 3 tarhole fans that were in there since before kickoff slowly snuck out as quietly as possible. It was just fantastic… when was the last time NCSU really took a Div-1A team behind the woodshed and just dominated them?

  2. Scooter 11/24/2008 at 7:23 AM #

The tarholes really needed those beautiful pine trees to step up on Saturday. Its the little things that make the difference.

Fred — from one speckled trout surf fisherman to another, its hard for folks to understand the call of the speck vs the game. But being 4+ hours from my favorite surf spot at Buxton and having two tickts — I’ll be there to watch the Pack defeat Miami. Hopefully, TOB will bring these boys back down to earth after this lofty win and get them focused on the next game.

All I can say is that there truly is a God — and he likes the color red.

Red sky in morning — Heels take warning.Red sky at night — Wolfpack won the fight.

I’m not sure but I think BLPack was being sarcastic. At least that’s how I read his comment.

Thought I’d drop by and take the medicine.

Its awesome coming all the way from Atlanta to sit in the cold and watch your team get bent over the wuffies.

It was too cold to even get in a fight.

“Early last week there was speculation about UNX being ready to take us behind the woodshed, that they would be angry and really take it out on us. (The comment that precedes my post was Tongue-in-cheek I believe) My contrary response went into great detail (not pasted here) why I thought NOT.”

    GAWolf,
Absolutely he was and that’s what I referred to with my “(The comment that precedes my post was Tongue-in-cheek I believe)” comment.

I didn’t get that on my first read, and when I did it was too late to edit. There were others who thought UNX would be pissed and therefore difficult to deal with. Someone else, Choppick maybe, who pointed out that this might be true for a series or two.

What I was attempting to do was put the UNX game in perspective with regard to this week. I would like to see “the U” come in as “angry” as UNX was but it’s not likely to happen.

    Sarcasm alert:
Wouldn’t you love to be writing your check to the Rams Club this week to help pay for the big raise you gave Chief “they’re all the same” Davis?

Go State!! You go too, Carowhiner, straight to HELL!!

    Good riddance.”

Yes, that Gator Bowl year was terrible…I hate that you had to suffer through it.

  8. Sam92 11/24/2008 at 10:33 AM #

yes, victory is sweet, especially when your know-it-all brother is a tarhole like mine

hopefully this helps with recruiting – scout.com has us next to last in the acc right now. tom o’brien is a solid coach, but he’s going to have to bring in talent if we’re really going to succeed

Red and Bo, The Specs are running, or at least they made an appearance last Monday, caught three of decent size and one nice one. Also caught and abundance of Mullet and three of the biggest Black Drum that I have seen. It was just the beginning of the best week I have had this year. Since the game is on Raycom, you should be able to catch it on a portable TV with Rabbit ears and get the best of both worlds, but I will try and hold down the fort for you at CF on Saturday, make enough noise for us both, and you will be there in spirit if not in person. GO PACK!!!

    Two observations:

    1) Did it strike anyone else how many UNC-CH fans were there wearing wigs and facepaint and shit? I have been watching football all my life and I have never seen so many TV shots of people in ridiculous getups.

    2) By the end of the game I had a Pavlovian thing going with the UNC-CH “third down bell” sound effect. I was actually celebrating when I heard the bell, before the snap, because I had been conditioned to know that a big Wolfpack play was next.

  11. packalum44 11/24/2008 at 11:00 AM #

First time I have ever seen this…but there is a direct link to this web page from http://www.thewolfpacker.com. They always have links to every article from papers across the country that discuss wolfpack atheltics and this blog was on there. Congrats! I think that is a big deal and will certainly provide lots of extra viewers and coverage.

BTW, it was a great day in Washington DC too! Many wolfpakers were celebrating into the wee hours. Hope we beat Miami and go to the bowl game up here against Navy or to Charlotte. Either way, I will be there!

I hope Fowler is talking about a raise for TOB and Co. right now. we dont need to worry about how much money Butch is going to make, we need to get TOB a raise asap!

But knowing Fowler, hes probably counting how many chik-fila sandwiches he wants to sell at the game next week and not about getting one helluva a coaching staff a much deserved raise/extension

Thanks for the link to the photo. I’ve already sent it to all my Hole friends.

Anyone here the remarks from Butchy? Kinda strange that he blames the success of the WOLFPACK on the inability of his team to hold onto the ball…excuses, excuses, excuses…

The challenge here is to get him to admit the only reason his team has a winning record is the inability of his opponents to hold onto the ball…but now, he’s a WHINER and he won’t do anything but make excuses…not tell you like it is…he and his team are nowhere near as good as their fans thought…

Did they win a game where they caused fewer than 3 turnovers?

  17. BoKnowsNCS71 11/24/2008 at 11:44 AM #

    Who’s minding the store?

Not to distract but I got an email from GoPack.com yesterday offering to sell me “State Championship Tee Shirts”

They looked pretty cool and in my happy game winning mood, I opted to buy 2. However when I went to the site — the drop down list does not have any or permit entry of shirt sizes.

I don’t know who runs the store over there but that’s not thinking smart after you get a great opportunity to raise some money on a good idea.

clarksa that gator bowl year was due to MOC recruits— the more amato recruits ,the worst the teams.

“2) By the end of the game I had a Pavlovian thing going with the UNC-CH “third down bell” sound effect. I was actually celebrating when I heard the bell, before the snap, because I had been conditioned to know that a big Wolfpack play was next.”

Funny you said that. I was there and started calling it the “first down bell”, because they rang it just before an NC State first down!

  20. GAWolf 11/24/2008 at 12:24 PM #

Girlfriend in a Coma’s Pavlovian statement is good stuff. I mentioned the same to my friends around me, but it was not nearly as eloquent.

The confidence that we can make a third down play and do so consistently is evidence of the good things going on with our program. For so long we were going full halves of football without one.

    DOOOOONGGGGGGGGGGG. DOOOOONGGGGGGGGG.

The other thing I think is just great is that Carolina brought out a NC flag. Apparently, and I cannot confirm or deny this, they started doing this weeks after we did. If so, that fact does not need to go unpublicized.

  21. GAWolf 11/24/2008 at 12:43 PM #

Also, in reading every post game interview I can get in front of me starting Sunday morning it’s great to see/hear TOB giving credit to his coordinators. I don’t recall that happening much before, and I think it might be indicative of why TOB maintains extraordinary consistency and longevity in his staff. If you look at the industry norm, he is clearly an outlier employer.

Further, this State championship talk has a deeper meaning to me. It’s a reasonable expectation and goal based on the reality of the situation. It’s a total different mindset than the last group. I am by no means mocking Amato or his approach as there is a place in the world for dreaming big. However, we immediately heard talks of a national championship. We bought into it and it was the catalyst for some amazing positive improvement for facilities and the overall excitement around our program. In a lot of ways that sort of dream big mentality was necessary to get that going. Amato should get the lion’s share of credit for doing that.

However, once those pieces were in place the need for substance was apparent. You can’t keep feeding recruits and fans hype of national championships when you’re not even going to bowls. A backlash is inevitable. Regardless of your business none of you can make empty, over-the-top promises that reasonably are not likly to be fulfilled (at least anytime soon) for long before customers walk.

Similarly, if you give your kids, players, employees reasonable goals that can actually be reached the feeling of success in doing so breeds more success. It’s the walk before we run concept that is akin to this idea of first you have to lose by a little…

Not to belittle the accomplishments of Amato’s staff, but it’s a refreshing change. And as Daily Update and others have forever stated, TOB and his approach to the game was in so many ways the next logical step for our program. Quite frankly, I don’t know if TOB and his guys could have done what Amato did if the roles were reversed. In fact, I think it’s highly unlikely.

The change is refreshing and up to progressively successful.

  22. robopack 11/24/2008 at 2:51 PM #

^ GAwolf hit the nail on the head. We do have to credit Amato for his salesmanship. Though Amato has left, that big dream still goes on inside us. If only a little bit. Maybe you could even say he might have left us with a “sleeping giant”. TOB might just be the one who can splash some cold water in its face.

Well…unfortunately, Appalachian folks don’t see it this way. I think they’re just bitter because they’re not in the FBS!!

I’ll keep it close to the vest and leave out the sarcasm this week. It is great to be a State fan today. Can’t stop smiling; continuing to wear Red! How cool is it when people come up to you at church or work or wherever and ask about that game? Beat ‘the U’!
