Mickey Plyer: Fire Tommy Bowden Now

So here is my opinion of what Terry Don Phillips should do:
1. Inform Tommy Bowden today that he has been released as the head coach.
2. Name Dabo Swinney as the interim head coach.

“They won’t fire Tommy, he’ll go on a streak now, win 3 games, probably beat South Carolina, and go to a bowl and everybody will be happy, although disappointed”

I don’t think anything less than going to Tampa will get it done this time.

Looking around Death Valley, there’s a lot of “new” there and there is still ongoing construction outside the stadium. Bottom line is that donors large and small ponied up bucks to update facilities and they are expecting return.

Problem is, Clemson’s OL is raw and young. Their DL, pretty much the same. They are out of synch class-wise considering the talent they have behing the QB and in the defensive backfield and need to get their excellent recruiting all on the same page.

Clemson definitely recruits well enough to be a top-15 squad. They definitely ought to be playing the conference title game, considering how average the league is.

Sorry, but I always feel the need to comment when my old buddy, ” “‘s, name comes up. But seriously, just because you play in a conference that has two of the top BB programs in the country, when is that ever an excuse NOT to have at least a top fifteen program, or a top twenty five program?

As far the Clemson fans being “irrational”, I DO NOT see that AT ALL. They know they can do it because they did it before, and they want to be back up there among the best. What’s wrong with that? It ain’t easy but somebody, somewhere, is named “The National Champion” EVERY YEAR, and once you’ve tasted it, there is no going back.

Some of you are suggesting that there are only a few programs who EVER have a chance, and that is just not true. That type of thinking is what allows once great collegiate sports programs to deteriorate into laughing stocks.

Noah, I’d have to disagree that even the conference champion shouldn’t be a 15 this year! Way too weak! And that goes for Tammy’s boys too!

Talking with some of the same people who Plyer likely talked with in his blog (big donors, ex-NFL players, etc.), I can tell you that they wanted him gone last year and were extremely pissed at how Tammy went about getting his extension. I think that just translated into this year having little to no tolerance (aside from the usual high expectations).

p.s. I am glad some of you can see the similarity between the Sendek and Bowden situations. Remember, it’s not about reality of the situation, but the perception of the masses.

jmartineau, in your opinion, which of these choices is the “reality of the situation?”

    a) Clemson is a program that does not have the backing/support/facilities to ever compete with the other “more accepted” national championship contenders.

    b) Clemson has everything it needs to be competitive with anyone, it’s just that their fans shouldn’t be so foolish as to expect them to do it.

  7. jmartineau 10/01/2008 at 2:24 PM #

Fred. First of all, perception is reality. Clemson has the facilities, they have the ability to land the talent, and there is nothing wrong with them having expectations. Of course, I beleive they are being unrealistic in thinking they have a shot at winning the NC every year, but admittedly they’ve been consistent in that belief since at LEAST 1981. (People said we were foolish to think we should expect more than Sendek gave us)

Actually, I don’t think Tommy is surprised by the fans reaction unless he is also seriously delusional. After 9+ years in Clemson, maybe he is.

Just checking back later, good reply ^jm, but it still leaves the doors open for either of the scenarios I listed above.

    So which is it?
