Quick Hitters from Around the Region

Last night, the 11 pm ESPN ticker had a wealth of one-liners of general interest. Here are the ones that caught my attention and a few more that I’ve run across today:

1) Beecher hopes to stick as Gamecocks QB

Although Beecher, a junior with the highest grade-point average on South Carolina’s roster, might make a couple of rookie mistakes when he makes his first career start Thursday night against N.C. State, the Gamecocks are betting he won’t repeat the off-field blunders that have haunted their quarterbacks the past couple of years.

2) Beamer decides against platooning QBs this year. Glennon the starter….Tyrod Taylor to redshirt.

I heard about this yesterday afternoon at my daughter’s volleyball game (more on that in a minute). I immediately assumed the worse…Taylor had some unspecified discipline or academic issues and was being held out. Evidently I jumped in the wrong direction:

“It was a Taylor family decision. If he didn’t start, he would redshirt. We decided that as a family after spring ball. He was preparing to start, and he did everything he was supposed to do. In a perfect world, Tech’s coaches wanted both to play. They would’ve played whoever was hot. You could’ve seen one start one game and the other start the next game. But from where we sit, that part is old for us. Sean is a fifth-year guy. His clock is now. Tyrod is mature enough to see that. Last year, he did something for the team. He took the shirt off for the team. Doing this now, though, no question it’ll only make him better.”

Team first, right? More here, with excerpts from an interview with MOC (now the QB coach at VT)

3) ECU and Skip Holtz agree to a new, six-year contract to last through 2013.

I don’t know that I much care one way or the other, but here are the first few thoughts that popped in my head:

Isn’t this a strange time to announce a contract extension?
Why did it take eight months after the last football game to work out an extension?
Did Terry or Skippy (or both) drag their feet over this?

4) Say Goodbye to the Orange Bowl

University officials voted a year ago to make the move, despite an offer of $206 million by city officials to renovate one of Miami’s best-known landmarks, which has subsequently been dismantled. The Hurricanes could collect as much as $5 million annually through the move, which would be a huge boon to the private school’s coffers…

But the university expects a crowd of at least 55,000 for the opener; only the final Orange Bowl game drew a bigger home crowd a year ago, and that gathering of more than 62,000 left stunned, when Virginia ended Miami’s stay in its old building by beating the Hurricanes 48-0.

Changing stadiums for money????? I’m shocked (well, not really). Aren’t you impressed with 55,000 fans showing up for a program that aspires to annually be in the top-10?

5) Paterno picks Clark to start at QB against Coastal Carolina

I hope that the CC Chanticleers are being well compensated for the pounding to come. (And yes, I had to look up CC’s nickname…and then cut and paste to get the spelling right.)

6) Conversation overheard at my daughter’s volleyball game

Ref: Are you a UVA fan? (to a guy wearing a UVA t-shirt)
Fan: Yes, I am
Ref: Well you don’t have much to look forward to this football season, do you?

OUCH!

With my proximity to B’burg and C’ville, I hear a lot about both programs. The VT fans are expecting a decent, but not great year. I haven’t heard from my normal contingent of UVA fans….which is probably not good news for the Hoos.

Even Bob Lee is predicting a UNC victory in Hoo’ville this year. More from Bob Lee here.

So beyond the Wolfpack, what’s caught your attention this week?

Not news, but in TMQ’s article about the NFL, he spent the first section discussing college “cupcakes”. An interesting analysis using real numbers and teams from this coming season rather than just perceptions and generalities. Knocks around the SEC a little too.

Dewitt has committed to Missouri and Garrius Adams was upgraded to a 4-star recruit by Scout. According to Rivals, we might be in the lead for top 35 recruit Noel Johnson (Favor’s AAU teammate)

I was watching a preseason NFL game in the last few days (maybe San Diego’s?) and they mentioned a rookie being from Coastal Carolina. I mumbled to my wife (who could care less about most anything that comes out of my mouth) that I had no clue Coastal Carolina had a football team.

  4. Wulfpack 08/27/2008 at 1:36 PM #

^They do have a team and a beautiful new stadium, I might add. On the way to Myrtle Beach…

I knew Taylor would redshirt this year if Glennon wasn’t sucking. There’s no reason to play two great QB’s if you can redshirt one of them. He had a reason last year, as Glennon was sucking it up. Tyrod is gonna be nasty though when he comes back next year if he continues to progress. I’ll definitely be watching some VT football next year whenever the pack aren’t playing.

If I’m not mistaken, Dick Sheridan served as an advisor/mentor for the Coastal Carolina program.

I find it absolutely hillarious that people took TOB seriously when he said Russell Wilson might return kicks…I have read it in several articles.

Re: #1 above; Tommy Beecher was a Marshal at Concord HS (so it doesn’t surprise me that he has the highest GPA, not that having the highest GPA on an SEC f’ball team s something remarkable).
More importantly he led the Spiders to the 2004 3-A Championship.
He scored 3 TDs in the last 5:12 to give Concord a 21-20 win over Asheville.

I made every effort to get CtC to scout him. He did call EZ Smith and got some tape “as a favor to an alumni”(me) but said he wasn’t going to offer him. The QB they got instead: Beck, who will be watching the game from the bench as the 3rd string QB.

packalum44 – if u watch the interview after practice on WRAL…when reporters chuckled, TOB gave them that Marine Death Stare of seriousness.

That is hilarious. At least it would make ESPN and be free publicity, and if he is actually runs one back…Hahhahahahilarious.

As I mentioned in a previous post I have it on good authority that Spurrier has asked TOB if Russell could kickoff and punt for USC as well, so he will be kicking the ball and then running down the field, catching the ball and returning it. I think that he will also be doing the play by play for ESPN.

I wonder if anyone at Coastal Carolina has any idea what to expect when they get to Happy Valley. Wonder who they normally play. There will be 110k in the stands and you can bet they won’t be setting on their hands until PSU scores either.

First it was App State vs Michigan, then Gardner Webb vs Kentucky, and now it’s the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers time to shine. But then again, maybe not.

I forgot to mention that Appy St goes to LSU this year.

Im a Coastal Carolina grad and also spent a year at NC State. Coastal is in the Big South Conference, we play folks like Charleston Southern, Liberty etc… nobody any good, but Coastal has been the class of the conference for the past few years and have a few guys in the NFL right now, Quentin Teal plays for Carolina Panthers and QB Tyler Thigpen plays for the Chiefs now. From what I know about this years team, I wouldnt expect an upset, best shot for the upset at Penn State would have come with the team Coastal had 2 seasons ago. Go Chants!

Ill be making the trip from Myrtle Beach to Columbia tomorrow… after all the injuries my excitement has turned to fear. Go Pack!

  16. DuPack 08/27/2008 at 9:54 PM #

I’m glad to hear they have been playing awhile and have an established program. Had the opportunity to attend a Penn State home game several years back and you have to see it (experience it) to believe it. If you have bills to pay PSU is the place to visit. I understand the visitor’s take of the gate is more than some teams will make the balance of their season.

Saw Lou Holtz say last night what we’ve been saying for ages around here…. BC got bunk bowl bids because their fans are less than awesome. He also pointed out that had a lot to do with their success in bowls… playing lesser opponents.

Anyone else a little uncomfortable watching his “pep talks” from last year?

    GAME DAY!
Its a double Cock day – as I believe the only two teams in the nation tacky enough to call themselves Cocks both play this evening.
Also the first day back for students here. Keep your eye on Perrilloux and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks as they take on GTech. JSU is picked to win the OVC (insert joke here) but I think tonight we get our butts handed to us. (JSU rugby used the slogan “cock rugby, its big” until the president promised them a new field if they’d stop, hahaha)
But I’ll be watch NC State. How I’d love to see the upset.
    Everyone have a good day!!

Lou is like an old relative who spits in your face when he talks. Gross.

  20. b 08/28/2008 at 9:22 AM #

Lous also predicetd Notre Dame would win 8 games LY. As a passionate indivdual, his heart often overpowers his mind.

  21. EverettBeez 08/28/2008 at 9:44 AM #

I heard someone on ESPN call Ole Miss the sleeper in the SEC West – I got really excited, then . . . I saw it was Holtz. Thing is, for as old as he is, he does know a good deal about football.

  22. Dr. BadgerPack 08/28/2008 at 9:47 AM #

As I mentioned in another thread… Holtz sees 11 wins on Notre Dame’s schedule this year. He is senile.

  23. EverettBeez 08/28/2008 at 9:56 AM #

Or blind to reality. Or both. That’s what makes his Old Miss comment so hard for me to take!

  24. packalum44 08/28/2008 at 10:03 AM #

Lou is an idiot. Like an old senile grandfather. He says the craziest things but he’s so cute doing it you just want to pet him and no one takes him seriously so no hard feelings. Keep entertaining us Lou. But please, watch the dribble that forms in the corner of your mouth. You are on national TV.

Different writers give their take on tonight’s game. Basically everyone picks the Pack to lose. Some think it will be close; some a blowout. All that is focused on is who is gone, but there’s no mention of guys like Ant Hill who are back and are proven good players. I know that doesn’t outweigh who is missing, but it at least deserves mentioning especially when you’re going to mention that the leading returner only had 12 catches last year or something like that.
