Rivals: Can Costner Get his Game Back?

NC State is asking a lot of questions related to basketball these days.

Will Ryan Harrow continue his ascent up the recruiting rankings and have the ability to immediately impact NC State’s program? (Link)

Who is it that will be fired from NC State’s basketball program around August 1st? (Link)

…and, today Rivals.com is asking Can NC State’s Costner find his game again?

“I never really felt that I got into that good of a rhythm,” said Costner, who signed with previous N.C. State coach Herb Sendek. “Because I was taking a significantly less number of shots, I really needed to be almost perfect to match what I did two years ago. That’s nearly impossible.”

The N.C. State staff doesn’t blame Costner’s struggles on less shots or less playing time, instead pointing to a knee injury he suffered at tryouts for the U.S. Pan-American team in July.

“When he came back at the end of the summer we shut him down,” N.C. State assistant coach Larry Harris said. “He picked up some weight and was obviously out of shape and never really came around. I believe that had everything to do with it.”

Costner doesn’t believe the injury was a factor. Perhaps it was a combination of the extra weight and the shift in roles. What we do know is that the talented swingman was worn down by media scrutiny and constant questions about what went wrong.

“I’m pretty sick of hearing about it,” Costner said. “It gets old fast. I’m trying to move on from last year.”

highstick, I think you may be right, but I still haven’t heard anything definite on it.

“Interesting info. on Strickland. Wonder who is responsible for that change? Sidney or did Sidney have no choice?”

Yes, very interesting info regarding Strickland / Jackson – and I am wondering the same thing …

Also, I believe one of the main duties as “Director of Basketball Ops” is scheduling – though I could be mistaken (in regards to the question over whether Jackson handled scheduling)

Either way, please play more good teams on the road and our RPI will skyrocket …

    From the article:

“”I feel that we are going to get up and down more and do more intricate things with the offense,” Costner said. “It should be similar to what we did two years ago, rather than just dump the ball inside. We are also a much closer and much older team.”

God, I hope this part is at least true: “We are also a much closer and much older team.” … If it is, the level of play and intensity should be so high that it clearly outshines last season’s level …

From PackGirl: “I look forward to seeing some teamwork this fall.” … Amen to that

If Lowe is making the change that everyone is hinting at, it would be an immediate LEAP forward towards solving what ails us.

Last season’s woes weren’t the result of Hickson equaling the subtraction of Costner. Nothing is that simple or 2-dimensional. While this squad never absorbed Hickson in a way which made NC State a better basketball team team— the bigger problem exposed itself clearly at POINT GUARD. We do not have a ACC caliber PG on the roster. Two years ago the Pack played brilliantly in stretches BUT when Astur was injured this team crumbled. We never replaced Astur… and we still haven’t. Until we solve the enormous hole at point guard, Hickson or no Hickson- this team will continue to struggle. Ironic with a point guard as our coach… or actual PGs have signed have turned out to be horrible. We have to do better and I like the light at the end of the tunnel in terms of future commits- but it ALL begins at POINT GUARD. We survive or perish at the point.

So what did Q do that was so damaging to team chemistry/performance? Why is everyone pussyfooting around? Obviously what some of you are hinting at goes beyond just the garden variety being an unqualified hire who has risen to his peter principle level of incompetence…THAT happens in sports all the time. (see Amato, Chuck)

Very interesting, very insightful, and very…cryptic. What the hell are you hinting at anyway Noah?

    C’mon, spill the beans.
