JJ Hickson Projected 32nd, 2nd Round in Draft by NBADraft.net

NBADraft.net does a good job projecting who will leave early and where they will go in the NBA Draft. The site is pretty good on not putting underclassmen on the board until they have heard some kind of news. We aren’t posting this to say it is “official”; we are posting because this is the first credible late-season projection we have seen related to Hickson and the draft since ESPN called Hickson a “first round lock” a little less than two months ago.

As for McCauley, I personally hold him more accountable for this entire mess than any of the other players. I think a lot of the guys really looked to Ben as a leader last year and coming into this year. He did seem to be a good leader last year so that was only natural. However, he was the first one to really get his panties in a wad over JJ’s time when he lost his starting spot. And I think that his pouting early on set the tone for the entire year and fractured our team dynamic before it ever really had time to form. Guys that really looked up to Ben saw him being selfish about minutes and starts and the die was cast. I think that Ben eventually worked through some of this during the year but the cancerous effect of his early actions had set in.

To compound his attitude problems, the guy just hasn’t played very well for most of the season. He was a guy that we thought was a rock and he turned out to be just another head case this year. If I were Sid one of the first things I would do after the season would be to sit down with Ben and have a long talk. He needs to be our sr. leader next year no matter who stays or goes. If he doesn’t seem totally devoted to putting the team first and leading through hard work then I would ask him to leave the team. He can stay on scholarship and graduate but he doesn’t deserve the put on the uniform. We cannot afford to have another small sr. class with guys who are all about themselves.

IF Hickson comes back, which he indubitably should if the wants to make the best economic decision, and IF he learns to pass out of double teams effectively, both he and the Pack would benefit. Once the ball went to him it never came out to anyone else’s benefit. He could be so much better than he was this year. And he could make the team so much better by passing decently. I think after a certain point it became obvious to the other players that off the ball movement was useless once he touched it.

What proof is there that McCauley was selfish and pouted? I’m asking seriously and not trying to bait anyone into an argument. Are there sources out there that have inside knowledge who have said this? Or are we drawing conclusions based on the team’s play?

I haven’t read or heard anything credible that fingers one or two guys for this chemistry issue. All I’ve seen is a lot of guessing. Surely it’s someone’s fault, but without the inside scoop I wouldn’t feel justified pointing fingers other than a general one at the coaching staff for having let chemistry issues ruin what might have been a good season.

rochester^^^ “McCauley was down this year, but he is NOT devoid of talent and ability.”

he is big, slow, and white. and other than some sweet old school post moves, which i really do enjoy, he was too overweight for them to be effective this yr. so, yes i would say he was pretty devoid of ACC level talent this yr. if you could name one team in the ACC he would start on, i would like to hear who you think he would supplant?

LOL at people bashing Hickson’s effort. These are probably the same people that think McCauley is all heart.

Take a look at this entry from section six:

^that entry has a link to +/- stats

  7. Rochester 03/10/2008 at 11:36 AM #

    I’d take McCauley over:

Anyone at BC (Oates, Blair, Southern)
    Lance Thomas at Duke
    Ryan Reid at FSU
    Anthony King at Miami
    Mikalauskas or Pettinella at Virginia
    Chas McFarland at Wake

+/- stats are interesting. Thanks for the link. But now that I see Marques Johnson is a +18 and Javi is a -33 I’m not sure what to make of them. From what I’ve witnessed, Javi is clearly the better player.

was this not the same jj whom we proclaimed a 1st round lock a little while back…………….everytime the poor kid steps on the court his stock pummels

McCauley doesn’t have post moves any more. He lost his quickness when he bulked up this year. He needs to slim down by 20 lbs for next season if he has any hope being the player he was as a sophmore.

Isn’t this the same thing that happened to Brackman? Do we have the same strength coach as we did then?

“Isn’t this the same thing that happened to Brackman? Do we have the same strength coach as we did then?”

Yes his name is “Papa” John Heineken.

JJ needs to work on his overall strength particularly his arms and hands. He got stripped twice in the post against Weak and the same happened in the dook game.
He is a fine player that is hitting the freshman wall in an ACC season that has gone downhill for his team.

He will be fine. I hope he plays here next year!

i too hope JJ plays with us again next yr. again, he is BY FAR the best player on this team. i agree, he doesnt have very good hands for a big man with NBA potential. But all his weaknesses are things he can improve on and i hope to see him do just that with NCSU next yr

Doesn’t seem to me that JJ added anything to the team this year. If he wants to leave let him go.

  15. packof81 03/11/2008 at 3:50 AM #

They can have him. He’s overrated.

  16. Par Shooter 03/11/2008 at 7:10 AM #

I would contend that as the 32nd pick he is probably rated correctly.

We shouldn’t have any problems playing on the road. Our own fans turn on the team better than any opponent could! Here’s a few new flashes.

    (1) It’s a big jump from High School to college. (2) Teams packed it in against us in the ACC. (3) JJ, even though he is very talented, still has to learn the college game.

The season has been frustrating. Thanks to all of the psychologists who can read personalities by watching on TV!

As for my part, i simply support my team.
