Phantom Call Gives Duke Final Two Points

As both replays in this entry indicate, there was the slightest bit of contact during the first part of Nelson’s drive that was obviously initiated by Nelson’s hook. No whistle blew at the time of the contact. The whistle didn’t blow (and a foul wasn’t called) until a part of the play where there was no contact and until Nelson jumped out of bounds with the ball still in his hands. At that point the whistle HAD to blow. But, as we all know in the ACC, the call also HAD to go against Duke’s opponent.

Since the guys at 850 The Buzz have so much time on their hands and love YouTube so much…I’m looking forward to the song that they write to coordinate with Duke’s winning points today.

Rob Roberts of the N&O was gracious enough to post a link to his video of the call, in the comments, review that and form your opinion.

You knew it was going to happen. We really had little chance. With the Devils down a point and with the ball…DeMarcus Nelson was close to traveling, then blatantly hooked Ben McCauley with his free arm as he drove to the basket (how many times does Brandon Costner get called for this?), then traveled again while simultaneously landing out of bounds with the ball in his hands.

The ACC officials call?

Foul on Ben McCauley. Two shots for DeMarcus Nelson.

Duke hits two free throws. Nobody else scores. Game over. Thanks for playing. The ACC’s darlings are protected and their seed in the NCAA Tournament doesn’t drop any further.

Shew. Disaster averted.

Coach K Wins #800 Duke 87, NC State 86

After reading all the comments, I’d have to say wufpup76’s points 7&8&9 are the best.

    “7. F Duke

    8. F Doook again

    9. F the refs for helping the undeserving team pull out a victory and robbing a team of a well played, all out effort game … F you refs, and F you ACC office for allowing this type of s*it.”

I’m not sure MJ is completely devoid of ability. I do think he’s completely miscast as a point guard. As others have mentioned on this site, he might be more of a 3. Maybe not a great 3, and maybe not an ACC caliber 3, but he makes a few drives to the hoop here and there that make me think, “damn, where’d that come from?” He got called for a couple of charges today, and while one of them may have been borderline, it raises questions about his decision making. Still, I think in a different role people might have a more positive opinion of his value.

That being said, it was his insistence on playing point that got him to where he is, so he might need to recognize his short-comings and angle for a different career path.

Count me in the camp of those who are frustrated by the previous lack of effort as underscored by the great effort today. If they played with that intensity all season we’d have 20 wins by now. It’s too late now, but hopefully some of these lessons will be learned and applied next season.

I know this is corney, and it doesn’t really matter this late in the season anyway, but for whatever unexplainable reason it has been delayed, this is the beginning, and what we expected and should have seen at the very start of season.

This is a wake up call that was brought on by personnel, and will continue for that very same reason. Everyone can say what they will about today’s game, and it has been admittedly aggravating as hell watching a team that appears capable of doing better one second, but completely fades away the next. I do feel though, and please FEEL FREE to let me know if I’m wrong about this at a future date, that this team turned ‘a’ real corner today. It wasn’t ‘the’ corner, but there was progress from some unexpected players and an overall confidence shown in today’s game that has been missing this entire season.

I don’t expect everyone to play better from here on out, some of these players seem perfectly content with the status quo anyway, but i believe this time some of the less used players earned respect and it may be little a harder to deny them PT, or shut them up during practice sessions. And that’s a good thing!!!

Disagree if you will, but this was a good day for the Pack!!!

After reading all the coments, I have to say Rick’s #4 is the best:

    “Rick

After stepping away from it and thinking about it here are my thoughts

    4) ACC refs are the worst in the league”

  5. redfred2 03/01/2008 at 10:47 PM #

^That’s kinda like saying that Lee Fowler the best AD at NC State.

  6. beowolf 03/01/2008 at 10:54 PM #

Someone one Packpride is saying Lowe tried to call a TO but was blown off by the refs.

This in interesting. I can just as easily believe that a general poster on Pack Pride is full of crap as I can believe that the ACC refs would intentionally prevent a Wolfpack coach from doing something necessary to help his team against Duke.

  7. turfpack 03/01/2008 at 10:58 PM #

Think about it today, at one time we were starting 3 freshmen, a sophmore, and a Jr.We were tearing there ass a new one. This team we were wearing them out,Duke was #2 in the nation just a week or so ago.Sid didn’t for get how to coach -I think these players forgot how to play- the passion showed up today and they need to learn how to keep(Lowe calling them out?)I was not a the game, but the crowd sounded loud and really in to it.Look it’s been 21 years since we’ve won a ACC championship-bad decsions, bad coaches, bad players,BAD A.D.’s!!!,we will prevail with great support, passion, coaching(hopefuly Sid) Recuiting(A must) THIS IS A GREAT UNIVERSITY-DON’T GIVE UP DON’T EVER GIVE UP. GO STATE!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to add a couple of things about my new favorite little player … JAVI!

Someone in either this thread or the game thread mentioned how Javi’s elbow on Captain D*ckhead and his slap away of Smith’s hand checking put Javi in contention for all-time favorite status … I’m in 100% agreement 🙂

Javi’s made some comments and plays this year that have displayed a real tough, not gonna back down attitude … gotta love that … After years of watching certain people just roll over to the “superiority” of chapel hill and doook, it is nothing short of WONDERFUL to see someone come in and not give one damn about their supposed “mystique”. I F’n love it

He’s been an extreme defensive liability at times, but I’m hopeful this will continue to get better w/ experience … The little guy was a true leader today and showed a lot of grit … I’m so glad Javi has completely proved me wrong from my comments earlier in the season

    ***

cowdog asked aobut the zones used today … it truly looked like a hybrid of several things, including a box-and-1 at times

In the postgame comments, Ben said they mixed some 2-3 along w/ some 3-2 … I could see those, but I, like cowdog thought some other stuff was mixed in … It was extremely effective at times and was a lot of fun to watch, particularly when Dooook looked confused at times

For a while, I thought I was watching some of Jimmy V’s “junk” defenses 🙂

  9. turfpack 03/01/2008 at 11:09 PM #

I heard that Wall and Brown were at the game today, anyone know if this true?

  10. geojim1990 03/01/2008 at 11:10 PM #

    beowolf-
If you don’t believe it, listen to Lowe’s post-game yourself. It’s right there … he said it himself:
    http://northcarolinastate.scout.com/2/733589.html

Now, it’s possible that Lowe just said that after-the-fact because he f***ed up in game-time. However, I’m not ready to believe that about Lowe without more evidence.

  11. wufpup76 03/01/2008 at 11:25 PM #

I just saw highlights on Sportscenter, and you could clearly see Sidney in fact jumping up and down motioning for a timeout as Courtney passed the ball to Ben … guess none of our friends in the striped shirts saw it

  12. Clarksa 03/01/2008 at 11:58 PM #

Coach Lowe should have instructed the players to call a timeout with a rebound…of course, he may have done that and they players simply didn’t call it. Only those in the huddle really know…

I’m pleased with the effort today that I’ve been waiting all year to see. I hope Redfred is right.

  14. RBCRowdy 03/02/2008 at 12:12 AM #

I am just glad we played hard. I’d rather argue about this stuff instead of firing the entire staff. A step in the right direction today IMO.

  15. beowolf 03/02/2008 at 12:19 AM #

    Holy freaking damn.

Just how out of control will ACC officiating have to get before something is done?

  16. mdstatefan 03/02/2008 at 12:34 AM #

Yes it was a bad call at the end of the game and yes this team deserved to win this. They played their hearts out and after booing during the florida state game, i have no complaints today. But even if we won today, what would that mean: A better chance of getting into the NIT. Honestly with this team, if they won today, i could see them having a game in the thursday game of the ACC tourney much like they did against Virginia and Florida State. A loss maybe better in this situation, showing they can play with the big boys but without getting to their heads. I just hope this team plays in Charlottte much like they did today. And if they do that they could let us have some fun watching them win on Thursday and Friday.

  17. travelwolf 03/02/2008 at 12:45 AM #

we had some mental errors – still haven’t quite figured how to rotate on defense (esp. JJ). but, it’s the best i’ve seen us play all year – at least for most of the game. at the end, the team was standing around too much and needed to move more on the offensive end. JJ could be much more help if he learned to do more than just post up – esp. if it’s 15 ft. from the basket. maybe Lowe is making him do that… anyway, it’s quite refreshing to see the team try – let’s hope that they can learn from this loss!

we got several decent calls in the last 10 minutes – more than i would have expected against duke. but, that last one was ridiculously obvious – the wrong person was on the line!

“As for Grant leaving, I wonder if it’s POSSIBLE that MJ could work his way into Grant’s role”

I really REALLY think that MJ is a small forward. If you cast him into that spot he suddenly has ADVANTAGES that he doesn’t carry over other point guards.

    1. He CAN dribble pretty damn good for someone not in a guard position. Not a lot of forwards can put the ball on the floor more than twice without turning it over. Sure he can’t dribble too well with his left hand, but as a small forward that isn’t necessary.
    2. He CAN hit the 3 at a 35% clip. It doesn’t look pretty at all, but it makes it in the hoop somehow. It’s enough to keep the defense honest.
    3. He has enough size and is actually faster than most forwards.
    4. He’s got some good spin moves and seems to play smart defense most of the time.

Put him against a point guard and he loses all those advantages because he can’t dribble as well as most, is not as fast, and sure as hell can’t hit the 3 enough to be a consistent threat. I think if you put him in a position where he isn’t required to handle the ball that he’ll play pretty well.

Now, as for why he’s playing PG this season, well.. honestly… he’s probably our 2nd best option. There’s a reason that Sidney wasn’t putting him in until Degand went down. Ferguson was showing nothing until a week ago, so while Johnson is probably #3 now, he wasn’t most of the season. The only thing about next year is that Johnny Thomas holds an incredible athletic advantage over Johnson, so he might have some problems getting PT in that spot as well.

Anyway. Sucks that we lost, but man, it’s good to see everyone on the team giving it their all. I don’t know if they were doing it for Grant, but no matter the reason, hopefully they realized they can compete with ANYONE.

  19. triadwolf 03/02/2008 at 12:53 AM #

I have been as frustrated this year as anyone, but I haven’t seen it as a lack of effort as much as players not letting go and just playing the game. It has looked all season like everyone has been playing with a bag of bricks strapped to their back. Today it looked as if everyone left that bag in the locker room.

There was a confidence today that has been missing. If my observations are correct, it means that we could have turned a corner. Confidence carries a lot of weight and playing with hesitation will get you eaten alive in this league.

We still are not that talented. When I speak of talent I mean basketball talent. That includes basketball intelligence, confidence, guts, and athletic ability. We have many guys with athletic ability, but are missing one or more of the other attributes. There are thousands of guys that are gifted athletes, but never make it to D1 – it takes more than just the physical skills to succeed.

Overall it appears that our younger guys seem to be better basketball players than our upperclassmen. They are young and inexperienced, but have shown some good minutes – especially on the decision making end. The young guys will have some turnovers and make mistakes because of inexperience. Some of the older guys have been making the same poor decisions since the day they walked on campus. Not because of inexperience, but because that is what they do.

If you look at the progress of players like Javi and Trevor this year, it is hard to argue that Sid cannot coach and develop players. Unfortunately the players have to be willing to accept the coaching. We still need some more talent and quality depth (especially at PG and SG), but I really think we have some good times ahead.

If I’m wrong – well, I’ll just keep sucking it up and taking it like the good wolfpacker I am.

Wow, a long day that went by too fast. Went to both the State game and the Carolina Hurricane game. Won a dollar each from my two grand nephews. One of them took Duke minus 11 and the other took State with 5 to 1 odds. I sure wish I would have had to pay that boy 5 dollars. Never really believed State would win today even when they were up by 13 with 12 minutes to go, but I did thoroughly enjoy watching the game. No doubt the turning point was Javi getting clothes lined and Costner getting called for an intentional foul.

Only downer for me other than the outcome was seeing Big Ben after the final buzzer on all fours in the middle of the court with his jersey pulled over his head. The young man should have walked off of that court today with his head held up high. It’s the majority of every other game this year where all of the players should have covered their head with their jersey as they walked of the court in shame.

Told you T-Rev was going to be an important part of this team. Can’t wait until Sid really sets him loose. I always liked Larry Bird.

  21. Trip 03/02/2008 at 1:14 AM #

^^^ Big Ben knows all about selflishness. He wears his jersey the RIGHT way. He plays for the team on the front, and he felt like he disgraced the name on the front of the jersey. Ben has NO reason to feel like that, not after this year or last year. I felt really bad for him, and I hope that his senior year that he’s finally rewarded for all the hard work he’s done.

  22. katymelrose 03/02/2008 at 1:57 AM #

gotta give lowe more years to get players he has recruited in to play the game he wants…not the one he has to because of the players he has.

When GG fouled out I knew we were in trouble…thinking back to the beginning of the season when we were in close games, he was the one taking (and making) the last second shot. He fouled out at the end of the GT game and we lost with Javi taking the prayer 3.

Many factors contributed to this loss…bad call by the refs, questionable no timeout (I don’t think we would have even gotten a shot off if we had called it though), no GG, and duke just being a really good team this year. I generally think the sign of a great team is when they don’t play well and still pull off a victory. We need to give ourselves a break…its not the worst thing in the world to lose to a probable #1 seed by 1. It sucks, yes, but at least we showed up for the whole game – thats a marked improvement.

  23. wolfpacker420 03/02/2008 at 2:09 AM #

It’s been a long season but you have to keep on keeping on! Should be the State motto! I have a gut feeling that JJ will be back for his ACC farewell tour next year. Ben has proven that he is the better 4 over Costner. Fells is a lock at the 3 position next year. Degand/Javi will be solid PG’s next year and the only weak spot I see is the 2 guard. What do you guys think? Who will start and who’s the best #2 position? Also, I was at the game as well and we got jobbed by the stripes! Costner showed that he wasn’t going to take the refs shit any longer when Javi was rapped and mugged at half court! It could of been a Henderson/Hansbaby moment if Costner didn’t hold back a little at the last moment! Go Pack

Apparently there were other things on Javi’s mind against FSU… Damn, our team is just having the worst luck..

There were extenuating circumstances. Back in Gonzalez’s native Puerto Rico, two of his childhood friends were gun-shot victims. Against the Seminoles, Gonzalez’s body was in the RBC Center, but his mind was hundreds of miles away. It was a factor Lowe didn’t know until the player came in Thursday for the talk.

“He came into my office, and he apologized for the way he had played,” Lowe said. “That tells you what kind of a young man he is. … I just told him it just didn’t seem like he was there [against Florida State]. Come to find out [that two of his buddies were shot] back in Puerto Rico, and he had all of that on his mind.

  25. wolfonthehill 03/02/2008 at 7:57 AM #

This game was like shooting a 97 in golf, but having your last shot be a birdie where you hole out from 137 yards out on the 18th hole.

It gives you hope that NEXT round, you’re gonna fire an 80 (apologies to those who can actually shoot 80’s, but that’s clearly not the norm).

Then you go out and play again & fire another round of 90+.

Know why? The hole-out from the fairway was a fluke. You’re still not a good golfer.

Ah, the life of blind hope, and of tomorrow always being THE DAY (or year).
