Tough loss, on dealing with one — Valvano philosophy

If you’re a passionate fan as I am, who believes as Vince Lombardi does that “Show me a ‘good loser’ and I’ll show you a loser,” it’s good to keep this Valvano advice in mind:

Jimmy V says he’ll allow his players 24 hours to feel sorry for themselves and curse the basketball gods. Then, he says, he’ll tell them to pick up their butts and get back in the mainstream.

What’s this feel good crap your posting? We’re State fans and we should be allowed to be miserable all the time! 🙂

NCSU Men’s basketball: stealing the hope from those who have some left.

What “feel good crap”? I was just justifying myself for (checks watch) about nine more hours of bitching. 🙂

    GET OVER IT…

Go listen to some Eagles, go chill out, go have an adult beverage, go take your 44 magnum and a bunch of old CRT Monitors and have some fun…whatever it takes.

The pack looked great during the first half. I am sure that Coach Lowe is struggling with what happened and how to prevent it again. Remember, we really did have a GOOOD second half against UNX…so much that Roy left in his starters.

The team is streaky…that’s the way it is. I thought that Brandon Costner started to look like himself last night…have any of your self pitying fans EVER tried to go on a diet…you do NOT always lose weight EVERY day.

I thought that Billy (MR CASH will help you and I’m getting old and senile) Packer was hilarious last night…he can NOT find anything good to say about the Pack. However, Costner did NOT look at happy in the second half. Maybe he was trying to find his groove again. Costner had a good first half. Courtney Fells had a lackluster game. I refuse to start playing WHAT IF…

If you follow the V Man’s philosphy…then you can whine until 11:30 tonight…but then, you must show your intestional fortitude and get on with the rest of your life…

Don Henley wrote some terrific lyrics…almost anthems. V had a great philosphy and attitude on life. I think that the Lowe man will learn from the defeats and build on his successes…

I will be in my seat on Sunday in the RBC pulling for the PACK…in any of you plan to attend with a poor attitude, then leave a post here and I’ll arrange for sale of your tickets.

    GO PACK

I hope they don’t forget about it. I hope it haunts them when the Dukies and Heels come to RBC and I hope that because of these losses the outcome then is better than the outcome now.

  7. RAWFS 02/01/2008 at 2:29 PM #

State should feel like they owe Duke two…two whole halves of basketball. They should also know that they can beat the Blue Devils and in the RBC they should take the bus to the arena knowing that they will beat them, and that at no point in the game will they let down their guard or accept that it won’t happen. In other words, they should take something away from this game that last far longer than 24 hours: that when they roll up their sleeves and play hardnosed basketball that they won’t lose very often.

What? Do you think our baseball team is going to underacheive as well?

  9. primacyone 02/01/2008 at 2:37 PM #

I could fire someone at the top, feel bad about for 24 hours, and then proceed to get back into the mainstream.

  10. primacyone 02/01/2008 at 2:39 PM #

The “I” above should be a “We” meaning We could fire the AD feel bad about it for 24 hours, and then feel great for nine months.

  11. mwcric 02/01/2008 at 3:04 PM #

    Hmmm…24 hours, times 18 seasons…let’s see here…LOL

As a stat geek, I did some number crunching – check this out. I’m 36 and have been alive since the 1971-72 season, my life is almost evenly divided now between teh “pre-fall” and the “post-fall.” Look at these numbers (first set record against team from 1971/72-1989/90; second set record against team since 1990/91:
    Boston College: 0-0, 1-4
    Clemson: 27-13, 17-15
Duke: 29-19, 7-33 (sweet sweet Lord)
    Florida State: 2-2, 20-14
    Georgia Tech: 19-10, 21-16
    Maryland: 22-24, 10-28 (Jebus)
    Miami: 0-0, 2-2
North Carolina: 20-32, 11-26 (surprisingly, not that different)
    Virginia: 24-22, 16-20
    Virginia Tech: 2-1, 5-1
    Wake Forest: 34-14, 13-26 (WTF?)

The swing vs. our Big 4 rivals? 83-65 before the fit hit the shan…and 31-85 since. Sigh.

Additionally, we went from 17-15 in the ACC tournament, including 4-1 in championship games, to 18-17 and 0-4 in championship games. Went from 18-7 in NCAA Tourney games to 6-6; went 5-3 in NIT games to 8-6. That’s .615 with 6 championships in eight chances (ACC, NIT and NCAA) vs. .525 with no championships in four chances.

Just tack another 24 hours onto that grieving cycle…

    “Go listen to some Eagles,”

I’m thinking of the Big Lebowski right now.

“I hope they don’t forget about it. I hope it haunts them when the Dukies and Heels come to RBC and I hope that because of these losses the outcome then is better than the outcome now.”

absolutely … i want to see some mean, mad players from here on out b/c losing a game you KNOW you could’ve won leaves a terrible taste in your mouth … now that you know you can play with so-called “top” competition, your own competitive spirit ought to kick in and you should be pissed as hell that you’re not winning tough games and even more pissed when you give up leads and basically “roll over” at the end … disgusting

i want to see some fire and brimstone from sidney, the coaches, and the players b/c we’ve discovered by now that we have some talent, and with confidence and intensity wins will come … no more excuses, no more whining, it’s time for gut-checks and to put on the big boy britches and be ready to do battle for an ENTIRE GAME against all comers

    go pack

I know we’re all hurtin’ when we start thinking about Jimmy V…………

  16. bTHEredterror 02/01/2008 at 3:54 PM #

This team could have used some “don’t give up, don’t ever give up” last night.

  17. choppack1 02/01/2008 at 4:05 PM #

bTHEred – I think some of them scrapped until the end. Unfortuantely, others did not – and they were in the game while those who had kept us in it in the first half sat.

  18. bTHEredterror 02/01/2008 at 4:18 PM #

Yeah chop, I’m being a little harsh, but my last HS game was a blowout. And I don’t feel bad about it because we played our best, from tip to handshake.

Sometimes you show more what you’re about when fate is tilted against you. Think Masada. Defeat may be certain, but let the bastards know you will spit your last breath at ’em.

  19. bTHEredterror 02/01/2008 at 4:21 PM #

Masada may not be the best example, but I wanted to avoid mentioning Thermopoli. Doh!

  20. wufpup76 02/01/2008 at 4:31 PM #

ok, i’m sorry – off topic, but this is mind-blowing to me …

lunardi’s latest bracketology (updated today 2/1) has seton hall in, and virginia tech, yes va tech is the last team in his field w/ a 13-8 record … we’re not even close to being in his next group of “8” teams out, which includes boston college, arizona state, illinois state, george mason, and maryland …

i’m not saying that nc state should necessarily be in (wins would take care of that), but i vehemently disagree with a lot of his teams … i mean damn, really … damn! … we beat seton hall at THEIR place for crying out loud … the reason i’m so worked up is b/c he’s usually fairly close with his predictions and if we’re this far out of the picture then it’s really bad news … but i do really disagree with him on a lot of teams … thank goodness february just started … }:[

yet another good post RAWFS – I am on your wave length today.
We showed not only can we hang with them, but we can trounce them. now we just need to put together for two halves.

I was pretty much over it this morning, but my wife wouldn’t even talk to me last night for fear I’d explode.

Costner didn’t start the second half did he? He was playing angry and pretty well, at the end of the first. Why didn’t the hot guys stay in. I know why Javi was out . @*#$REFS**&*%^ but that is neither here nor there now. Whomp Wake!

  22. BillyVest 02/01/2008 at 4:48 PM #

Anybody have any Norm Sloan quotes? He had a bigger, more positive, impact on the program than Valvano.

Before people get bent out of kilter, NCSU was teetering on the brink of ACC irrelevance, when Sloan took over. Sanctions from recruiting and gambling violations had taken its toll on the program. Press Maravich didn’t do much, in the two years here, with regards to recruiting for the future of the program. Within a few years, Sloan put together the best squads in NCSU history, and left with the the program still being among the top programs in the ACC.

Valvano wasn’t perfect and brought some of the scrutiny on himself. If he had contented himself with being a college basetkball coach, and hadn’t taken up the AD opening, as well as all his self promotional work, which included college basketball color commentary during basketball season, there’d wouldn’t have been any reason to believe Golenbach’s accusations, let alone suffer through three NCAA investigations and getting stuck with some kind of sanction. I don’t remember the details, but we weren’t post season eligible for at least one year, during Corchiani and Monroe’s time here.

Anyway, I just think Valvano gets a bit more attention than other coaches, in our “pantheon” on this site.

I can undesrtanding skipping over some of Piggy Hargroves more memorable one liners, but I’m sure Case and Sloan must’ve had some pearls of wisdom, as well.

I was just looking at the RPI and Pomeroy rankings for State’s opponents over the next 10 games. State has a higher RPI than their opponent in 7 of those 10 games. State has a higher Pomeroy ranking than their opponent in 0 of those 10 games.

State’s record against teams with a higher RPI thus far is
1-4. State’s record against teams with a higher Pomeroy ranking is 7-5. Going by this I would say the RPI is a better indicator of a teams strength than Pomeroy.

An 8-8 finish is very doable especially if they play like they did in the first half last night.

  24. beowolf 02/01/2008 at 6:57 PM #

Billy, you’re more than welcome to share some if you have them. I have written about Case as well, but I don’t know much about Sloan, as he was before my time — plus you have the whole he-left-us-for-frigging-Florida thing.

I don’t see in my quotation of Valvano the argument that he was perfect or a saint. He was an inspirational man, however, and his philosophy of life informs my own.

  25. vtpackfan 02/01/2008 at 7:58 PM #

I hope the players really take advantage of their FULL ride at NCSU. Some of them really need to pay attention to any forign language classes, since any pro ball that might be available to them will be over sea’s.

Look, Dook sucked the first half. Sid know’s it. V couldn’t do squat with this team, because let’s face it it. V would have gone after a JC PG prospect over the “gang” Lowe brought in, in a second.

I want Lowe to succeed, I really do, but he shouldn’t be compared to V as a coach at all yet. He played for him, won a Nat’l championship, but as far as being a stand out college basketball coach? Jury is not only still out, it hasn’t even been picked yet.
