NC State 79 Miami 77 (OT); X-Man Gavin Saves The Day

What is it with NC State vs Miami games? Two sports. Two overtimes. Two Wolfpack victories!

Before NC State stepped on the court tonight the Wolfpack’s triumvirate of early season Big East victims were generating some major progress for our future NCAA Tournament resume as Villanova won at Syracuse, Seton Hall defeated Louisville and Cincinnati upset Top 20 ranked Pittsburgh. (Did anyone mention that Carolina was knocked from their perch by Maryland?).

State started today at #50 in the RPI and climbed a few spots before tonight’s game in the RBC Center even tipped. By the end of the evening the Wolfpack sits at #36 in the RPI having played the 44th toughest schedule in America and having won five games against Top 100 opponents.

The Charlotte Observer is going to really hate this one. After a couple of weeks of odd coverage and inexplicable comments from a sophomoric staff they aren’t going to know what to do after such a character-filled win by the Wolfpack.

Now some important points to make about tonight —

* Let me make one point very clear — Coach Lowe’s offensive genius was responsible for the JJ Hickson tip to tie with just seconds to go in overtime. If you go back and watch the play, you will see that it was designed for Gavin Grant to take that lane to the hole and Hickson to circle through behind Grant in case of a miss. Grant got hacked without getting a call from the official and Hickson timed his roll through the lane perfectly. How ironic that State wins the game because of two things that we do so poorly – rebound and create turnovers.

* How awesome is Gavin Grant? How much are we going to miss him next year?

* It was a classic, old-school day in ACC Basketball as kids all through the state and the region were stuck inside due to bad weather and had the opportunity to watch back to back to back to back ACC games that they will remember for a LONG TIME. Today was vintage.

* From the first possession tonight we saw a totally different Wolfpack team on offense. This team played with energy and was sharp and crisp while playing with focus. Speaking of focus…when Courtney Fells is focused he is an excellent college basketball player. With Grant’s departure at the end of this season I hope Fells can continue to step up to carry the load as our primary player on the wing.

* What I am about to say is actually pretty sad, but unfortunately true — I think tonight’s win over Miami may have represented the most exciting win in ESA/RBC Center history. Last year’s win over Carolina clearly ranks as the “best” win by nature of their national ranking, the style & excitement in which the game was played and the fact that it was Carolina. But, tonight’s win at the buzzer bests anything else that I can remember in the RBC. Others that immediately come to mind would be Justin Gainey’s shot to beat Maryland and the ESA’s opening night against Georgia.

* Who is responsible for teaching the NC State big men how to play defense and block out to rebound. And, what is the problem? As much as Jack “Tookie Williams” McClinton hurt State in the second half, the only reason Miami was even in the game was their ability to score at will from the low post on and on offensive rebounding. The reason the Hurricanes were able to get the ball inside is because our big men don’t play defense. Standing behind the offensive player on the block so that his receipt of the ball is a given is NOT defense. Tracy Smith seems to be the only NC State post player who understands how to front a man down low. After Miami’s bigs were the willing recipients of easy entry passes, they then were able to score easily because we continue to choose not to double down on the ball in the post. It is a recipe for disaster.

* Coach Lowe seems to have settled into his rotational preference for substitutions and Tracy Smith’s hard work on defense is earning him some of Brandon Costner’s time.

* Javi Gonazlez is showing the shooting stroke to which the coaches were originally attracted and have been swearing that he possessed. If he can step up and nail a couple of threes a game then State’s offense suddenly opens up more and can become much more effective.

* Marques Johnson cannot shoot. He knows that he cannot shoot and therefore he doesn’t shoot. He does a lot of things well to have only played in a handful of college games, but he has no confidence in his shot and he is a liability if the opposing team plays zone against us.

* Both point guards have GOT to step in about 5 to 7 feet to run the offense. Our offense continues to start WAY too far away from the basket.

* Miami’s football team may be working hard for a better image, but their basketball program sure feels ‘rough’.

* I was initially fearful when I saw friggin Jason Capel was going to be announcing this game, but Capel (and Steve Martin) actually did a fine job of announcing until they stumbled through the ‘Anthony King foul’ at the end of overtime.

* Did you notice that, despite playing great offense in the first half that Brandon Costner was nowhere to be seen in most of the second half and overtime? Something is going on there. I watched Costner a lot tonight and despite his offensive proficiency he was caught flat footed on rebounds and defense. I don’t know if it was lazy or if his mind is somewhere else. We can only speculate that Tracy Smith and Ben McCauley‘s willingness to do both elevated them to Costner’s time tonight. Additionally, I think Miami’s athleticism was a little much for him.

* Speaking of Big Ben McCauley, how about a shout out for his guts while playing injured tonight. Do not underestimate McCauley’s impact on our defensive rebounding late the game.

* Coach Lowe is now 1-1 against Miami avenging last year’s egg that was laid in Coral Gables late in the season.

11pm – original entry now updated with lots of bytes

Grant was funny in the postgame interview. When Capel asked him about encouraging the younger guys, Grant said something like, “I just try to encourage them and tell them it’s OK because they’re going to make mistakes. Heck, I turned it over like it was my job last year.”
    That was pretty funny.

I hope this great win will turn the Pack around and also please quiet the ridiculous cries of fans for Lowe’s head. Please, it’s midway through the guy’s second year. I hate losing to Carolina so bad too, but give Lowe a chance. Nobody wants this basketball team to win more than he does.

SFN: Dude…seriously…what are you talking about? You haven’t seen ANYONE on this blog call for ANYONE’s head. Don’t bleed over your experiences at other sites to this one. Why would you elevate such idiotic and stupid thoughts/comments to begin with? Don’t pay credence to the 5% to 10% of crazies and they will become significantly less relevant. (A lesson Lee Fowler still has not learned) Don’t create straw man arguments and critcisms here.

I don’t know if it was lazy or if his mind is somewhere else. We can only speculate that Tracy Smith and Ben McCauley’s willingness to do both elevated them to Costner’s time tonight.

Or maybe he was worn out because he’s still out of shape?

I agree with you about Jason Capel doing a good job, but will overlook the one blatant mistake he made. He was very well balanced in his commentary, and he didn’t sound like a Tar Heel secretly rooting against State. I’d like to see more of him.

Classic GG quote in the post-game interview. Amazing win. We played with heart today. I thought we rebounded better. I am concerned that if we are going to allow the ball to be thrown into the paint easily then we MUST double down especially with a guy like Graham who was hot. McClinton did all he could to win it for Miami and he played an amazing game but it came down to what Sid excels at in the end…which was a close game with a just a little time left. He called a brilliant play and we won it. No question in my mind…this was the most exciting finish in RBC history. It looked like total pandemonium on the TV. I wish I could have been there….it looked like quite a few people saved a seat for me. Now we know…this team can win if they set their minds to it. Sid said in the PG that he wanted McCauley in for rebouding and post offense. I would have like to have seen Costner a little more since he was hot. But it looks like Sid had it under control. Were we lucky? Yes…but we made some of our luck tonight. Go Pack!

And furthermore….HS would have NEVER pulled this one out.

Great game. I knew we weren’t done.

  8. highstick 01/19/2008 at 11:19 PM #

I totally agree RAWFS. This was the first game in a while that I didn’t hate the announcers by the end of the game. No matter what the score was!

All I could think about whenever they showed Capel was “8-20”. Best year of my life.

  10. Packster 01/19/2008 at 11:22 PM #

I see the N&O used our win to push the UNX loss out of the headlines.

“Before NC State stepped on the court tonight previous Wolfpack victims had made some major progress for NC State’s future NCAA Tournament resume as Villanova won at Syracuse while Cincinnati upset Top 20 ranked Pittsburgh.”

Add Seton Hall to the good news. They beat Louisville tonight.

    ^ Will do! Thanks

Was a red fleece pullover attached to the fist on the steal? Because I did sit about 14 seats to the right of the cameraman (I was closest to him), and I was dancing around like a crazy person. Although I don’t think I could have possibly been in the sightline between camera and basket. There were 4 empty seats to our left where ticket-holders usually sit (but didn’t show up).

Not to be a wet blanket, but we did play pretty awfully in the second half and in the OT (except last 10 seconds). We still need to play MUCH better.

But tonight was great, and the season will have at least one fantastic memory attached to it.

Why did they keep showing the replay with the hand in the way over AND OVER AGAIN!??

I had the awesome pleasure of attending this game and boy it was a good one. Really awesome atmosphere that I did not expect with the snow likely causing a bunch of people to stay home. What more can you say about Gavin Grant? He is quickly becoming one of the most clutch players in the history of NC State. It was great to finally watch this team get pumped for a game and show some serious effort. There was one point where I actually saw Costner yell out on the court.. that’s probably the most emotion he’s shown all season.

Javi looked really improved. If he can start consistently hitting the open three, he could be a decent threat in our offense. He looked a lot less flustered than in the past games. I love that he makes one or two scrappy defensive plays per game.

We NEED to learn how to double in the post. that number 00 guy was just tearing us up time after time in the second half.

The play at the end was miraculous. It took a minute to really register that Gavin had stolen the ball. The RBC went nuts… nothing is more satisfying than pulling out a win like that at the end of the game. I love it.

I just read a article on WRAL about the game. In the article the guy says that the wolfpack faithful booed the State team off the court at halftime, at the last game, at the RBC center. I have lifetime seats and I have been to all the games and I have not heard anyone boo the team off the court. WRAL-Oh how they hate us so.

  17. Roger 01/20/2008 at 12:10 AM #

    SFN: Thanks. See ya.

  18. niceguy 01/20/2008 at 12:15 AM #

SFN- your right, I have not seen anyone on this site call for Lowes Head.

  19. Jamie 01/20/2008 at 12:20 AM #

I wonder if the NandO will report ASU getting their #25 asses beat tonight?

    IT WAS GREAT…

This ranks up there with many of the other Sidney Lowe wins…

The team had intensity. This was the FIRST game where the team actually tried to get the fans into the game.

Sidney was antimated the entire evening. Costner looked good in the first half…tired in the second.

Speaking of TIRED…the entire last 10 – 12 minutes took it’s toll on the players. Sid had Hickson (4 fouls), McCauley, Gonzales, Fells and Grant on the floor. On ONE free throw, Gavin and Courtney were “arguing” as to who HAD to be in the lane. They were BEAT.

FUNNY STUFF…Gavin, I think, threw the ball into the stands. One of the assistant coaches (Harris?) was trying to get the fans to GIVE IT BAAACK…I never could see if they did.

Ray Com was going to do a post game interview with Sid and Gavin…but somebody lost there lights…had to scurry around to find them.

Ole’ MacDonald NEVER sounded better. The RBC folks put Hungry Like a Wolf on the PA later.

I DO NOT expect this intensity to suddenly stay at this blazing level…but it proves that the old spark (from last year and the ACC Tourney) is there. It will die down from time to time, but I suspect (and this can be classified as wishful thinking) that we will see more of it as the season progresses.

Good thing some intelligent folks hit the brakes on the bus before Sid got run over…

    GO PACK…

Team hasn’t turned the corner yet, but they’re well on their way. No time to savor this win though, Pack has another critical 3 game stretch with a very tough and physical GTech team coming in on Wed., @Florida State on Saturday before @Duke on the following Thursday. I’ll be content if we can snag at least one win, ecstatic for 2 wins, and throwing on the Red Suit if we get all 3. Tough stretch, but the wheels are starting to click at just the right time.

  22. beowolf 01/20/2008 at 12:35 AM #

Javi G played like a solid PG tonight.

I second that, RAWFS. He made some key plays at the end. Reminded me of his nickname being “Second Half Javi.”

  23. MrPlywood 01/20/2008 at 12:47 AM #

Someone pleeeease post this game on ACCVideos.com…

  24. Sweet jumper 01/20/2008 at 12:53 AM #

Jamie, You are probably right. The Fayetteville Observer also pulled a long article off the wire last week about ASU breaking into the top 25 and how Voldemort/HWSNBN had been State’s coach before he and State parted ways 2 years ago. I feel certain that there will be no article about Stanford whipping ASU 67-52 in Sunday’s edition. I can’t wait until Matt Doherty and SMU break into the top 25 to see how that is handled by the local papers.

  25. Sweet jumper 01/20/2008 at 12:54 AM #

Great win by the Pack. Keep the positive energy and take it to GA Tech next week.
