Jay Bilas Comments During Halftime and Postgame Of The UNC Beatdown

Bilas at halftime: “A little embarrassing? That was the most embarrassing first half I’ve seen all season long. What do you do if you’re Sidney Lowe? Do you draw a play up? You’ve gotta go in (to the locker room) and draw a big heart there and say, ‘Do we have any?'”These guys are not relating to each other. Their body language is horrible. They look like a bunch of zombies whenever they get into a huddle. They didn’t come prepared to fight. When you go on the road, you have to come prepared to fight and fight together. This is a team going in five different directions on the floor. I have not seen a performance as embarrassing as that all year long.”

Bilas after the game: “There’s no way that any team in America is going to hold a good team to 13 points in a half with their defense alone. N.C. State helped them (UNC). N.C. State was a huge problem for themselves.

“There is something going on with that team — and I don’t know what it is, I’m not Dr. Phil here — but they don’t get along with each other. That was not a team that trusted each other, that valued each other. They didn’t come together when things got tough, they went in different directions. That’s the first thing that they’ve got to address, how that team relates to each other.” Jay Bilas, ESPN

    shooting guard,

some great reads above about the refs.

I dont really want to hop on the whine train with Sid about the Refs but it was a little rediculous in the 1st half especially, and throughout the second half. I have DVR and I find myself replaying the once in a while nasty dunks by Fells, or an occasional backdoor cut that produces points, but what I find myself replaying the most is poor officiating. Walks not called, Fouls not called, nitpick fouls called, etc. What intrigues me the most are jump ball calls. I have never understood how a player can physically splash onto an opposing player that has fallen and lost control of the ball and they are obviously fouling before they finally get a hand on the ball. Whistle——JUMP BALL. What the—-?

I think that Sid needs to plead his case to the Media as well as work the Refs in-Game. Especially if he feels that it is no where near 50/50. I mean hay you can put up with a foul not called hear and there if there are a few Make-Up calls on the other end. I don’t think that whining about the Refs sometimes is as much as an excuse as it is just cold hard Facts. The fact is we stunk it up REALLY BAD yesterday, as if we really needed Bilas to remind us, but at the same time the Refs were not calling it Fair. Would it have made a difference? Maybe we get beat by 24 points instead of 31 points—An A$$ beating is an A$$Beating. And the Team surely has deeper problems than the Refs but it dam sure doesn’t help when the REFS appear to be Bias for the HOLES. But it definitely can make a difference in a much closer game.

About Tyler Handyboy—The guy has committed a grand total of 35 Fouls all season(about 2 per game)—-has not fouled out of a game and averaged about 30 minutes of play per contest. Coincidence. Nah! That’s total bologna. That’s called poor officiating. The Refs see what they want to see or what they are instructed or paid (and/or INTIMIDATED) not to see. Check out handyboy on youtube versus the giant (George) from UNCA with his Fireworks RUN SLAM and JAM over the Big GIANT. Handyboy Saves the day Again. He didnt walk past the GIANT but he RAN SO FRICKIN FAST BY him I thought a contac Lens would fly out of his Eye and Lodge into one of the Refs eyes to correct their poor vision. But it was too late. Handyboy Saves the day And Wins Again and all is a blur to the REFS.

As a 50+ year old lifelong “The” North Carolina State University Fan, this is the lowest I can remember. I think it has been the high expectations, good NIT run last year, etc., but I just don’t think it’s worth it. I still enjoy this site, I think more than watching the games. I don’t think the sky is falling, and I hope Sid can turn it around — damn, if we lose bad to Clemson, I will be depressed, but since I rarely get local news out here, I’ll definitely come to SFN to get the scoop. Thanks SFN, as I think you’re the best deal related to NCSU athletics at the moment!

Funny, I don’t remember anyone complaining when State shot 33 free throws in the Western Carolina game, while WC shot only 2. Or the 50 FT attempts versus Cincy’s 14. In fact, in the 8 non-blowout wins for the Pack this year, they’ve shot 218 FT’s while their opponents have only shot 74. Poor officiating? Or rose colored glasses? Not to mention the two wins (Nova and Davidson) that came in the final seconds on generous foul calls. Didn’t hear any complaining about the officials then.

Another couple of facts: the Pack averages 26 FT attempts per game, while UNC shoots 27 (for a whopping 1 FT attempt difference); the Pack averages 14 fouls per game while UNC averages 16. What, how can this be?

Face it guys, don’t try to turn this game into another whine about the officials. That is supposedly to be left to Carolina fans, right? This game was decided in the first half because the Pack had a poor offensive game plan and looked like they could care less. Lack of effort, not poor officiating, was the cause of this fiasco.

  4. wayofthemaster 01/14/2008 at 1:19 AM #

I’m in my early thirties and have watched the Pack since the mid 80’s.

After the ECU debacle (on top of the New Orleans and Mich. St. debacles) I swore that I wouldn’t watch another game this season and I haven’t to this point. I’m certainly glad I missed this one.

I think most of us have seen the writing on the wall for most of the early season, but are reticent to point it out.

This team is bad and is only getting worse and may be the worst we have seen in some time in Raleigh.

I’m not going to subject myself to the aggravation and frustration of watching a team that shows as little pride as this one does.

I’m still reading SFN to keep up with the team, but the next game I watch will be in the Fall of ’08.

  5. old_pcorone 01/14/2008 at 3:05 AM #

Initially I was glad the game was going to be on TV here in Europe

Sat down at 6PM, grabbed a beer and after 10 minutes wanted to throw up!

JayBilas maybe an idiot but his commnet in 100% accurate to what I saw.
Was there something in the DeanDome water?
Do the players/Sid need some jalapeno peppers up their a***??

    At least he Chargers won!

    Go Kay Yow! Go pack!

It is disingenuous to say the officiating was biased. There were no fouls called because our team were dribbling into crowds. Hansbrough does walk uncalled on occasion, but Gavin went skipping down the lane in the second half for a dunk.

You force an opponent into fouling you when they can’t make a solid one on one play to stop you or thru a mismatch, no ref will bail you out for dribbling into a triple team and trying to force a shot.

Most of the “good” shots were contested in the first half, and some were difficult. The ones that weren’t, didn’t fall either. Carolina hustled to spots to cover teammates, and our kids didn’t adjust by passing out of trouble. When they started to in the second half (Sid called it playing right) they played fairly even 50-49. They seemed to try to beat their man 1-on-1 as if they had a grudge, and didn’t play with each other as much as at the same time as each other.

Regarding running up the score, it is real simple. Don’t want to get stomped? Do something about it! We didn’t call of our dogs and raise a flag, and if Carolina can have a 25-0 run (theorhetically) so can we. It’s not their job to make the game close, okay.

And besides, if you could beat them by 30, wouldn’t you wanna do it? Its the Golden Rule. Consider it a sign of respect they didn’t let off the gas.

Also, mark it down for later, its a loooong season and anything can happen……

  7. Wulfpack 01/14/2008 at 7:23 AM #

Sorry, but I don’t think the officiating had anything to do with this one. Wish it did, but the problems are far more internal.

I very much think there is credence to the idea that these guys don’t get along very well. Hickson was seen scowling at Costner in the Presbyterian game.

What Costner could possibly say to a teammate this year is beyond me. He’s been an all out flop.

  8. MattN 01/14/2008 at 7:46 AM #

I have not read all comments, but I can’t believe people are looking at officiating. Holy crap, open your eyes and take off the red glasses.

might have missed tjis in an earlier post—however—here goes—i believe that we were down 40-17 at helf-time to unc in reynolds during the 79-80 season—the dudley bradley game that we ended up losing by a hoop at the buzzer—the point?—a horrid half can and will happen to even good teams—i believe that team went on to an ncaa bid—also—thinking back to the dook comparison—the dookies did suffer mightily for nearly twenty years in basketball—their 1966 final four appearance was only pre-empted by their 1978 visit until their 1986 championship game loss to louisville—for twnety years they were either bad or average—with the exception of a two to three year spurt with the g man and gene banks in the late seventies—the recruiting landscape has chamged—however—we can get back to the top ten on a consistent basis if we give sid a chance to establish a recruiting base and the opportunity to gain some valuable coaching lessons at this level—saturday he resembled an nba coach who was playing through the game to get to the next of the 82 left after it got out of hand—the kids unfortunately won’t come motivated by their paychecks and the opportunity to feed their family every day—i believe that he’ll reach this group—right the ship—and win 7 league games—i also believe that we’re going to a bcs game in year three with tob—and that the sun should shine everyday—truly a lunatic fringe attitude—go pack

  11. Pack92 01/14/2008 at 8:42 AM #

I waited 2 days to post so I could cool off. Saturday was an absolute massacre and debacle. The funny thing is, I think 2, maybe 3 at the most NC State players care. Yes, we have lost an improving PG. What does that have to do with attitude, heart and hustle? I agree 100% with some of the above posts that Sid should become Roy or K like and sit down whomever he senses is not giving 100%. The locker room walls should have had peeled paint on our side at halftime. Yes, we played a box score good 2nd half but was the effort really there? Were the holes actually playing then or did they feel sorry for us? I too recall the fast break mentioned earlier and the finish was just stupid.
I do not believe this is a situation Sid cannot turn around. We looked bad last year at this time in the same way – uncohesive play and at times purely selfish. Bilas was right. There are internal problems with this team that have nothing to do with a PG or officiating. Sid needs to pull out the stops to find and eliminate those.

  12. zahadum 01/14/2008 at 9:36 AM #

Ok, I’ll be devil’s advocate here and say that I not only did not think Bilas’ comments were ‘spot on’, I thought they were totally inane. He’s pretending to be a mind reader, and while I’m sure as a dookie that he’s a superior life form in his own mind, I doubt that he has the power of telepathy. He has no more idea what’s going on in those kids heads than anyone else not directly part of the program.

Also, he seems to have a little bit of amnesia. His soph. year, when they lost by, yep, 31 to Wake Forest, was that because they ‘didn’t get along with each other’? And that was with a top calibre PG in Dawkins.

As for the game itself, I will say that our strategy was totally baffling. Even in the early going, before the great meltdown, I knew we were in trouble because we were simply playing too fast. And you could see it in the UNC players demeanor, they were like kids on Christmas morning. They were expecting a game where we ran down the shot clock every possesion, and instead we were taking the first shot available every time down. You could practically see them going “you’ve got to be kidding me, they think they can run with us? Bring it on.”

I know many will argue that UNC dictated that tempo, and there’s certainly some truth to that. But I thought it was more of case of our playing right into their hands.

“I didn’t hear the announcers criticize Roy Williams for leaving his starters in until the last minute either, even after Bobby Frasor’s injury. Carolina class, through and through. Is that the sportsmanship that State should aspire to?”

we didn’t take ours out & raise the white flag either.

the officials were NOT to blame for saturday’s contest … nc state was

we got our a** kicked – end of story

my post about the refs was in general – as it affects ALL games played everywhere … wasn’t meant to be construed as whining about saturday’s game … but anticipatory calls do exist, it’s human nature

  17. redfred2 01/14/2008 at 1:02 PM #

If Lowe had benched the starters and challenged them after the NO lose, then I’d say it’s mainly the player’s fault, but Coach Lowe did not. And he STILL HAS NOT. These kids are an embarassment, and they need to sit the pine and be embarrassed themselves. Lowe had better get his shit together because there nothing positive on the court, or coming from the coaching box, on Saturday.

  18. packgrad93 01/14/2008 at 2:25 PM #

^ pretty sure the kids were embarrassed Sat. Losing our starting PG for the season was a huge loss. As I stated in another thread, we will go as far as Marques Johnson takes us. Javi is a top200 true frosh brought here to backup. He got thrown into a bad situation Sat. As MJ improves & the other players get used to playing with him, we’ll improve as a team.

  19. redfred2 01/14/2008 at 8:03 PM #

packgrad93, I’m not even talking about individual positions on the basketball court, who’s hurt, or anything like that. And, I’ll even grant you that X’s and O’s seem to be pretty much non-existent at the moment, but this season’s crapola is about 10% strategy, and 90% attitudes. I’d lump the coaches right in with the players and say that the entire group is well overdue for some major adjustments.

  20. redfred2 01/14/2008 at 8:38 PM #

^I’m afraid overly doateduponjunior, from over at the hill, is right about the officiating this time. I also believe that Len Elmore said something about Roy and his starters with around 12 or 9 minutes left to play, and then he mentioned it later also. Elmore didn’t imply anything negative though, like we might expect to hear about some “lesser” coach for not calling off his dogs, but it was at least mentioned.

  21. benniebolton 01/14/2008 at 8:44 PM #

redfred, spot on man. Losses with effort and heart I can tolerate. That bs Saturday was hard to stomach, no effort from players or coach, the most lethargic looking bunch I’ve ever seen

  22. choppack1 01/14/2008 at 9:24 PM #

That loss had nothing to do w/ officiating. When you’re down by 30 at the half – and the highlight of the second half is when you cut it to 25, you lose the right to complain about the calls.

  23. Ed89 01/15/2008 at 10:28 AM #

My first post here…I enjoy the site, and have to agree with Choppack1. I don’t recall any of our players fouling out, so that was NOT the reason we lost. I hope Sid makes some line-up changes tonight. My choice would be to play Big Ben at the 4 and let Costner watch for a while. Dennis would be the first in off the bench…

I don’t think it is fair that every other ACC team is allowed to beat up on Tyler Hansbrough and we are somehow exempt from doing that. All we need to do going forward to get that ncaa bid is to finish as close to .500 as we can and hope that one of those wins is against Duke or Carolina. I know that the Scheyer kid will flop his body around on offense hoping that a State player will happen to breathe on him. We also have to be aware of those charges against Duke while on offense. I feel comfortably about our chances to make it a close one against Duke. First of all, they are not good on the free throw line, although they spend a lot of time there. They do not have a great penetrator (not because they’re gay) we are talking about dribble penetration here. We should be able to stay out on their deadly 3 point shooters. They also show lapses on offense (have gone 4 minutes without scoring). We need to capitalize on their weaknesses. Also, regarding UNC, that game will be held in OUR HOUSE next time. If we can keep that Hansbrough fella from auditioning for a dance competition-while supposedly playing physical offensive basketball (refs help needed here), we may be able to contain Tywon from driving in (refs, lay down the LAW). We stand a chance to make this a close one as well. Last but not least, let’s show some of that classic street-ball type that we have come to love here at NC State. Why do you think we got Lowe on board? Man, I remember Shackleford and Washburn. You were scared to play those guys hard because you knew that they had street-cred you didn’t want to mess around with. They proved that they were not scared of doing time, and that intimidated other teams. Lowe will help out with that as time unfolds here at NC State. We all know he’s got the credentials to be LEGIT and to REPRESENT. Let’s finish this season off hot!!
