The End of V Week

Business and other responsibilities kept us from focusing very much on Jimmy V Week…so, we thought that we would link to this entry.

Additionally, you should check out the Hoop Dreams program over at Duke.

CBS ran a feature on this program in March of 2005 and I started an entry that I never finished, but I never forgot.

If interested in helping Hoop Dreams fulfill its mission, contact the program at 479-6069 or at [email protected].

Jimmy V week on ESPN provided me with a few more opportunities to talk to my kids about Coach V and the tradition of NC State Basketball. I know that ten members of the HOZE Squad have agreed to donate $198.30 each ($1983 total) to the V Foundation to mark the 25th Anniversary of the 1983 National Championship. I have scheduled my first attempt at running a marathon for the 2008 Chevron Houston Marathon to mark the 25th Anniversary and to encourage people to donate to the V Foundation. I lost a grandmother and my best friend at a previous job, who was only 39 years old at the time, to cancer but I have also witnessed the victory of my 5 year-old neighbor over brain cancer in the last two years. Between Coach V and Coach Yow, beating cancer should be the calling of the Wolfpack Nation.

Texpack is correct. The Wolfpack Nation should help to bring beating cancer to the forefront. I think that the Wolfpack Club should incorporate the V Foundation into their club somehow. Maybe they should give people membership points (a one-fifth equivalent to cash directly donated to the Wolfpack Club) to members that donate to the V Foundation. This would bring more attention and donations to the V Foundation and shed a positive light on the Wolfpack Club.

    just a thought.

i read an article from Wlimington star writer Andrew Jones yesterday where he intimated that NC State and the Valvano Center.. errr ah RBC center should host the Jimmy V classic on Case Court every year.

This year, we decided rather than buy presents for extended family we would make donations to worthy causes in the person’s name. With the wide impact of cancer, we had no trouble choosing the V Foundation as one of our charity gifts. For those that haven’t donated, it makes a nice gift and they send a CD of the JV’s Don’t Ever Give Up Speech at the ESPY Awards. I too wish NCSU would get more involved in this worthy cause. We should try to regain our rights to the Jimmy V. legacy that rightfully belongs to NCSU.

Count me in as a Wolfpacker dedicated to beating cancer… Parkinson’s and cancer (thyroid and pituitary) are my two research thrusts.
