NC State 85 Cincinnati 77

Box Score |Recap|

VERY NICE and BIG win tonight as the Wolfpack keeps scraping back to ‘par’ after the UNCO and ECU losses. You can see the importance of tonight’s game by clicking here.

* NC State wins three in a row and is now 2-0 against the Big East for the season.

* State scores over 80 points for the first time all season! as Costner, Fells, Grant and Hickson all hit double figures (and Degand had 9 before getting injured)

* Gavin Grant steps up and proves his MVP status as a senior. Grant single-handedly took over on key offensive possessions in the last three minutes of the game. Grant ended the game with 15 points.

* Of course, nothing good happens to the Wolfpack without something bad happening – starting point guard, Farnold Degand sprained his left knee in the second half and will undergo an MRI on Monday to assess the damage.

* Hopefully the Wolfpack realize that they won this game as much for with defensive effort and overall focus and energy.

* That was best game of the season for Wolfpack backcourt – particularly the point guards. Degand and Javier Gonzalez combined to manage the game effectively while contributing offensively with a combined 15 points.

* With Degand’s injury, the fans that wanted to see Marques Johnson might see more of him than they initially expected.

* State shot 66.7% from the three-point-line because of shot selectivity – State only shot 9 three-pointers all night.

* I will go out on a ‘limb’ and predict that NC State won’t lose any games this year where we shoot 67%+ from the three-point-line and get 15 points from the point guard position.

* The N&O’s ACCNow Blog had some good halftime comments here. They have since updated the comments after the game.

* State travels to New Jersey for a game with the Big East’s Seton Hall on Thursday night at 7:30pm. Seton Hall is hovering around #50 in the RPI and will provide State a fantastic opportunity to “trade-in” that UNO or ECU loss.

* At the beginning of the season the Seton Hall game was not officially on any television schedule. GoPack indicates the game will be on ESPNU; but, you know how many mistakes GoPack makes. We’ll check on the television situation for you.

that was a great game to watch. i really like dan bonner as a color commentator. he’s quite neutral and knowledgeable. he mentioned the many fouls that UC was called for, but also repeatedly mentioned how those fouls were obviously calls and senseless on UC’s part. also, he gets into the game emotionally – just marveling at good plays on either teams part. i hope he sticks around.

the pack seems to be developing offensive and defensive cohesion – much earlier than we did last hear. JJ Hickson had several mistakes defensively where he didn’t follow his man out to the perimeter and help our guard when he man set a screen. Other than that, it was a pretty solid effort. Of course, UC is not the caliber of a top-20 team – much less a Duke or UNC, but it’s a start.

Glad someone else noticed the fouls too. Everytime their guars would drive they would be clearing the lane with their hands and elbows!

It was a good win and I will take it. But obviously Cinci either never viewed any tape of this team or they never practice zone defense. I didn’t once see them go to zone. They tried to press us all night and we burned them. I still think that if a team plays zone against us and packs it in, they will always have a chance to beat us. We have no consistent outside game, and while our guards did a fine job last night beating the press, they were never a factor on the offense. zone, zone, zone will kill us until we get some sort of outside threat other than Costner(our power-forward).

So I will take the win, but until this team shows me something different on offense, and especially from the perimeter its going to be a long season in the ACC.

Hope that Degand is alright. Hate to see a guy have to sit out 2 years and now have this happen.

I was right about the newspaper. We didnt even get a picture on the front page and chip threw in the word “disintigrated” in describing last years game, which has no place in the article. For god sakes, it always seems like the writers are just going through the motions when reporting state, and write grandiose meth induced articles on the holes

how soon can we expect to hear back about Degand? Surely there are MRI facilities available during this holiday period?

Not to beat a dead horse Chill, but what are they supposed to write. Now I know we never get the good press, and the holes always seem to get a pass, but that game last night wasn’t worth the front page let alone page 2.

It was ugly from beginning to end. For 40 minutes I watched guys shoot free throws. I think you can basically gain nothing from this game, other than we got better on rebounding and costner fat-butt may be coming around. But we will never again this year take 50 free throws. We made 37 of them, and most of those fouls came 40ft from the basket. We weren’t even in the act of shooting. Now I’m not arguing the calls, but no team this year that we play will play this stupid. Cinci has to be one of the dumbest teams I have watched all year (exept maybe VT last night). If they just foul us 1/3 less from 40ft we probably lose that game. If there are 2 games so far that you can throw out as meaningless to gain any insight into it would be this game and the michigan state game. We aren’t nearly as bad as the team that showed up in Lansing, and we aren’t nearly as good as the 85 points would show last night.

If Degand is out for any significant time we may be in even bigger trouble than we were already in. Javi played 17 min. had no field goals and had only one assist. That will get you killed in the Acc. I think our point guards may be last statistically in the ACC in both assist and points. So with one of them down we just got even worse. This season is not looking good. Hopefully its just the pessimist in me and we turn out to at least win a few I don’t expect and they beat my expectations, but either way GO PACK!!!

those who wanted to see Johnson get minutes will get your wish. This is a major blow, but I hope Javi and Marques will rise to the challenge. Tough break for a kid that had to sit out of year, man this stinks, it sounded like he was getting better with the experience. Unfortunately this also might mean the flying tomato will crack the lineup again.

They are a dirty team. I imagine they will have trouble getting teams agree to play them. They took out our point guard. I hope they never win another game.

We won the game. We seem to be getting better. This team could be good.

I didn’t get to see the whole game due to the kids birthday party. However, I liked what I saw in the way of hustle and rebounding. It seems they are making a concerted effort to improve in their weak areas. This win was all positive from my point of view (except the injury to Degand) and I’m starting to have hope again. I applaud their effort to fight back for the respect that they had lost from earlier performances. Go Pack.

The reason the game wasn’t on the front page is because it ended at about 10 p.m. The front page had LONG since been built (unless Sidney Lowe decided to shoot someone after the game). It got pretty high billing in the online version.

Actually the game was on the front page in my addition of the N & O and contrary to what some have said it didn’t imply that the refs favored the pack in the calls but that Cincy played a “roughhouse game and foul NC State 35 times.” Let’s not be too parinoid.

As for THAT newspaper it depends on where you live or get your copy. In Raleigh the final edition will have the latest scores and stories. If you get the state edition
(no pun intended)then it leaves Raleigh earlier and therefore the later games have no chance of getting covered no matter who it is.
