The Bloodletting Begins (Again)

It is ACC-Big 10 Challenge week, and that means it is time for another beat down of big boys from the midwest.  The ACC has won each of the previous eight challenges and leads the overall series by a whopping 48-27.

Make that 49-27 after Wake Forest won on the road at Iowa last night.

* This entry will provide you a full schedule of the this year’s challenge.

* This entry will provide you a quick look at how ACC teams have performed to this point.

This year’s match-up against the Michigan State Spartans represents the most anticipated match-up of the series for NC State.

Sidney Lowe is 1-0 in the Big 10 Challenge as the Wolfpack gave us our first glimpse that something special was building quickly in Raleigh when State played an exiciting brand of basketball by defeating Michigan last year, 74-67. The game wasn’t all positive for State as Engin Atsur suffered is season-lingering injury early in the first half; while Jimmy Dykes proved to be a miserable announcer. (To Dykes’ credit, he was never this bad again in future Wolfpack games).

I think that you will enjoy looking back at the live blogging entry done during the game last year as well as the post game/media comments entry. Additionally, this entry also provides some great retrospective that included the following comments from ESPN’s Andy Katz:

If I’d told any of you that Engin Atsur would miss nearly the entire game against Michigan, and the Pack would still win… would you have believed it? Lowe has his team motivated. They believe in the “team concept,” but they don’t believe their team depth is too thin. Beating a quality team — without Atsur — is proof positive.

And how about Lowe’s in-game coaching? He’s animated. He’s intense. And his first-half timeouts — which are becoming a game-by-game event — always seem to spark his team at the right time.

I’m not so much worried about MSU scoring, I know we can match them in that category. I’m worried about the amount of opportunities that they’ll have to score, (ie. offensive rebounding). They are assassins on the boards, and we’re quite the opposite.

I think Fells can atleast limit Neitzel so that he doesn’t have a breakout night shooting 20+ points. If we can keep him at his average (Which so far this year is only 14 points?) then we’ll be fine. The offensive rebounding will murder us though if we don’t get better at grabbing the ball. MSU has been ranked in the top ten for the past few years in overall rebounding edges over their opponents.

Check out Section6 for info on the rebounding disparity between us and them.

If he’s on, I don’t think we can stop Neitzel. I also don’t think that it would be wise for Lowe and staff to over compensate and sacrifice Fells’ offense in order to stop one player. We need Fells to play on both ends, but even harder and more consistently than he has so far this season. I think we need to step up defensive intensity at almost every position, hope our bigs are playing their games and T R Y I N G harder to rebound, and then just play our game.

Wow… Len Elmore actually had some nice things to say about State in the broadcast of the FSU/Minnesota game… I nearly fell out of the chair.

Redfred, you’re right on about the bigs playing their game. One thing Michigan State has had a prepensity toward of the years is getting into foul trouble. If we play our inside game, we should get plenty of free throw opportunities; now hitting them becomes a major issue.

duke looks kinda scary right now against wisconsin. they are much better than last year: taylor king and nolan smith are tearing it up. smith is a better version of demarcus nelson. king has reddick range. the most heralded of the three freshman, Singler, has done the least in this game. but they will be easy to despise.

So what it is so far – 2 to 1?

    I really like this ACC-Big 10 challenge.

What I like most about it is that before the challenge, we hear how important it is. After the challenge – and the ACC wins – it’s never discussed again. It’s like it never happened. ESPN will wax poetic about how strong the Big 10 is and how overrated the ACC is (most years.)

You can bet when/if the Big 10 actually wins one of these things, we’ll hear about how it proves that the Big 10 is a great conference and that yes, the ACC really is down after all.

I leave tomorrow morning from PA to attend the game, going to be there in bright red. Do not know where my seats are, hope other State fans can make it, maybe a large enough crowd for a good chant.

Will miss reading the game thread as it goes during the game.

Looking forward to a State win.

McPete, I said that about the DUKIES BABY a few weeks back. They are looking VERY MUCH improved.

Dr BP – anything of note that Lem said about us? Missed the game due to the Christmas parade of all things. At least it was tonight and not tomorrow!

Man, what I saw of dook was scary. damn Coach Rat’s hide.

Nice win by the little kitties of Clempson. 5-1, roll on ACC!
Sure looked like GT could’ve pulled it out – if they could hit their free throws!

After watching Clemson brick multiple free throws, I suddenly felt much better about our FT shooting =P good thing that they hit them when it mattered at the very end though.

EB– He talked about the fact we are playing well, have a good halfcourt offense and very strong interior play… nothing overly excessive, but all positive.

Not bad, only GTech has lost so far.
BC and NC State have the greatest challenges of tonight IMHO
