O’Brien Likes Look of Pack’s Future

RALEIGH – N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien, the ol’ Marine, is looking for more than a few good men.”We need to sign a lot of good football players,” he emphasized at a news conference Thursday. “All our focus is on recruiting.”

O’Brien wants to beef up every position, especially in the “thin” offensive line, where only eight healthy players will be available for spring practice that begins March 18. Adding depth at linebacker is another big push.

The Pack has received 15 oral commitments for 2008, including two from elite in-state athletes — Bunn running back/defensive back Brandon Barnes and linebacker Terrell Manning of Laurinburg. Five other North Carolina prospects also said they intend to sign with State, according to Scout.com.

I respect O’Brien taking the high road with the BC AD.

I like how he said they would tailor the offense to Wilson’s skills if he turns out to be the best playmaker at QB.

If I’m Wilson it sounds like FUN to me, an offense designed to make me look as good as possible and win some big-time football games.

I respect what DE has done for us and I am sure he will be back to fight for his position.

However, I believe the coaches will have to give the nod to a new starter next year, even if no one separates himself much in the Spring.

At a WPC meeting in G’Boro this year TOB said we had some great athletes but he did not know at that time how many would make football players. I think he has a pretty good idea now.

“We need to sign a lot of good football players.”

That’s as profound as saying “We need to score more points.”

“if he’s the man and we have to we can tailor the offense around him some.” Paraphrasing what TOB said in regards to RW and his hs background of operating in a shot-gun snap offense.

This could just as easily be interpreted to : If Burke decides to transfer, Evans gets KO’d, and Beck hurts himself in an off season sky-diving escapade, then “if he’s the man…. so on and so forth.

For RW to go from organizational chart to 2 man depth chart w/o this dominoe effect then he’s going to have to do it the Bible/TOB Smith & Barney way (he’ll earrrrrrrrrn it!).

/\As a scout team QB, he likely already has. As bad as our starting guys are on the OL, what do you imagine the scout team OL was like? And going against our best D day in day out at the same time. Who was getting the brunt of the resurgent DL everyday in practice? There was maybe one FS in the conference, Silva @ BC, who had a better year than DaJuan and Russell played against him everyday.
If RW made any impact he likely is a prospect. He is also completely uncorrupted by previous college coaching (right now Callahan and Trestman are the influences on our QB’s pasts) in relation to the others, giving him an inside track. And the OL lost some guys so we’re likely to struggle there at least next year, and a mobile QB who can escape the rush may become necessity. We’ll see him in April.

Best thing about not being bowl eligible is that the staff can focus on fixing the years of mistakes that Amato was allowed to get away with. Clearly a large number of players on the team this year had little desire to play football but rather just wanted to be a football playa.
