Damn. Sorry About This.

Take a look back at this entry from January 26, 2006 and tell us what your pre-season football thoughts were when the 2006 schedule was announced.

The following are a few comments that we made at the time:

* A seven-win or six-win season in 2006 will indicate the program has AT BEST stalled. Less than six wins and the program is in very deep trouble.

* The last time that NC State ended a football season with back-to-back games against North Carolina and East Carolina, NC State fired coach, Mike O’Cain.

* For real shits-and-giggles, ‘what if’ Skip Holtz was having a fantastic year at East Carolina and Chuck Amato was having a horrible year at NC State. Could we be watching Skip’s last game on the sideline in Greenville prior to taking the head job in Raleigh? It is not beyond the realm of possibility…but, it is nothing more than fun fan talk right now.

* To ^that same point – is it 1999 again? Remember in year seven of Mike O’Cain’s tenure at NC State the Wolfpack ended the season with back-to-back games against Carolina and East Carolina. State lost them both. O’Cain was fired. After three years of under-achievement compared to talent and expectations, is Chuck Amato on strong enough footing to weather a similar fate if he were to lose both of these games?

I would have guessed between 5-7 wins at the beginning of the year. Very interesting comments whoever wrote them. Why shouldn’t Skip Holtz be considered?

    Jeff wrote the comments.

We agree about not ignoring Skip if State has to get into a search process.

Here was my blast from the past in May —

I would be ecstatic with 7 wins. I really got spoiled by Phillip. Then someone reminded me that NCS has only had 3 NFL starter quarterbacks (Roman Gabriel, Eric Kramer, and Phillip Rivers — are their more who played? Not as back ups).

While we have had some good talent at the QB position, the last few years have not been good. Based on last year, I just don’t see Marcus pulling out wins in the last minute or from the start. If ihe does, that will be great.

Seems we often have things out of sync. Great or good QB but no protection for him. Or awesome defense but no QB offense. Runners we seem to do well in but having the whole package at the same time seems to plague us (as it does every other team in the ACC quite often.)

So I am concerned about this year. 7 games would probably “Exceed expectations” See below for Wins = W, Loss, and ? for who knows?

    Date Opponent Location Time
W Saturday, Sep. 2 Appalachian State Raleigh. N.C. TBA
W Saturday, Sept. 9 Akron Raleigh. N.C. TBA
? Saturday, Sept. 16 at Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg, Miss. TBA
L Saturday, Sept. 23 Boston College Raleigh. N.C. TBA
L Thursday, Oct. 5 Florida State Raleigh. N.C. TBA
? Saturday, Oct. 14 Wake Forest Raleigh. N.C. TBA
? Saturday, Oct. 21 at Maryland College Park, MD. TBA
? Saturday, Oct. 28 at Virginia Charlottesville, Va. TBA
L Saturday, Nov. 4 Georgia Tech Raleigh. N.C. TBA
L Saturday, Nov. 11 at Clemson at Clemson, S.C. TBA
? Saturday, Nov. 18 at North Carolina Chapel Hill, N.C. TBA
W Saturday, Nov. 25 East Carolina Raleigh, N.C. TBA

SFN: Big disagreement here. Don’t understand predetermining “L”s for HOME games against Boston College (lost a lot) and Georgia Tech whom we beat in ATL last year). Similarly, game vs an improving and emotional ECU isn’t a “W” – especially in the last game of the year and who knows what the impact of injury will be to the roster at that point.

[…] We made reference to the comments included in this entry yesterday. Question for you — why isn’t Skip Holtz’s name being connected to the NC State job? People forget that Holtz built a pretty successful program from scratch (and with no resources) at UConn before choosing to join his father at South Carolina. That didn’t work too well. Regardless, Holtz is back on his own and immediately succeeded in turning around a pitiful ECU program. […]
