Chansky: Davis Should Go – Now

Full link.

No school has ever been charged with its associate head coach and recruiting coordinator (John Blake) being a paid by an agent while on the university payroll. Since that is unprecedented, there is no telling what kind of sanctions will follow. Also, the academic fraud among players and accused tutor Jennifer Wiley being hired privately by Davis are serious sins in the eyes of the NCAA, according to reports.

It really is mind boggling when you sit back and think about all the things that have gone on over there. Clearly it is a program out of control, and it astonishes me that the guy in charge seems to have skated.
Hopefully the NCAA will punish Carolina on their complete body of infractions. If they do, it is going to be very, very bad for the bandits in blue.

I disagree with Chansky’s assertion that Butch will be facing constant fire from the media. The local media has had ample opportunity to ask Butch Davis the tough questions that they should be asking. Instead they ask him vanilla things like, “How has your team been able to handle all this adversity?” as they gaze slack-jawed, thinking about whether they should get chicken or fish from the buffet (maybe both!).

Butch will deflect any questions about the investigation or scandal, saying he can’t comment on on-going investigations, and the limp-wristed media will allow him to…

I agree with Chansky – UNX’s only hope is to clean house and start fresh. Had they any integrity and honor, they would.

    The clean players deserve it.

Turning the reigns over to an assistant isn’t a bad idea as long as that assistant has clean hands. If the assistant entrusted continues business as usual, that could be a crushing blow if it ever came to light. In other words, I’m not sure that’s a wise decision given the debth at which the corruption has been alleged. It certainly isn’t a given that they would be better off. Cleaning house would be a much wiser move.

Davis has earned the title he richly deserves: BMFD.

Saying this kind of thing is what got him early retirement, right?

  7. albunde6 07/18/2011 at 9:13 AM #

I do not want Butch, Dick, or Holden to go. Remember we have seen numerous famous people get away with crimes, only to have karma bite them in the butt.

We own Butch. Why would I want to give them a chance to upgrade? Second, this should have to impact recruiting. Butch had to use a pro football coach to land a recruit. This kind of thing always comes back to hurt you.

Dickie and Holden “fell on their sword” to defend a cheat. This creates marketing nightmare for the “carolina way”. Your AD and Chancellor no longer have the high ground. They will forever be linked to SMU, USC, and Ohio State as schools that made the decision to win at any cost.

Alumni and the Walmarters have now used the phrase “everybody is doing it”. I have been waiting for this for 20 years. Next on my wish list is basketball.

I don’t think the pile of dirty laundry will be ignored if Coach Davis is fired. This is far from over. With or without Davis as head coach.

albunde6, You have a point. The longer this drags on, the worse they look. And from what we’ve seen so far, it looks like this crew is willing to hang on until the bitter end. Theirs is an utter inability to do the right thing.

We do own Butch and I hate to see him go. Along the same lines, I would hate for them to have a 2nd shot at bringing in a guy who can actually coach the game of football. They pick and choose the guys they want so they have a huge recruiting advantage. I hated to see Mack Brown go – he was ana wful coach but he sure could recruit.

The ONLY refreshing thing about this article is finally one “of them” sees this for what it is. Although not sure Chansky is one of them any more, it is nice to see someone recognize this.

I hope they have to pry him out with a crowbar and lube. The longer he stays, the more damaging it is to their credibility and the more difficult it’ll be to get a coach to take on the challenge, especially if it’s a new AD doing the hiring too.

Imagine how much harder a time Debbie Yow would have had finding a basketball coach if Sidney Lowe’s team had been caught up in a multi-pronged scandal in addition to being mediocre? And if it had been Debbie’s first year here? I’m hoping this cripples their program for the next 20 years.

Peeps, GA just told you that the corruption runs deep.

At this point, prior to sanctions, Davis stays. Period.

Thorp and Baddour have outs, if they can no longer stomach what they have chosen to do. They chose to go all in with the government of NC and it’s appointed BOT.

In the meantime, we are welcomed sit back, and enjoy the Death of a Thousand Deaths.

In case you missed it, BobLee has some interesting thoughts/insights on the subject:

I don’t believe Butch can win without cheating (hell he can barely win while cheating). If he stays around he’ll either be a loser or remain a cheater (while on some sort of probation) and if caught again then the “death penalty” WILL be in the discussion.

    Keep it real, Butch!

  15. WolfBlood 07/18/2011 at 10:25 AM #

I dont care if Butch stays or goes, he’s 0-4 against my Coach. I want recruiting restrictions, ban from post season play, and scholarships taken away. We’ll see how many Top 25 recruiting classes they get with that hanging over their heads. Coaches, AD….whatever. I want them to get hit with something that will take them 20 years to get over. Just like it did us.

  16. Astral Rain 07/18/2011 at 10:52 AM #

I just hope they don’t get forced to start Scott Bakula at QB when we’re the last game on their schedule…

  17. WilmyWolf 07/18/2011 at 11:21 AM #

remember: this is a school that wouldn’t fire Anson Dorrance after he sexually harassed his own players. Should anyone reallv expect them to fire davis?

  18. dingo 07/18/2011 at 11:52 AM #

albunde, I agree with most of the things you said. Waking up to more negative press about the Holes every morning is kind of like a daily dividend check for investing in years of Cardiac Pack strife. I LOVE the fact that Butch is winless against us, and I LOVE the fact that the administration is dragging the “Carolina Way” through the mud with every twist and turn of this investigation…

BUT: I think it’s naive to assume this guy can’t coach or is incapable of beating NCSU multiple years in a row, and evening his record with us eventually. The man put together a championship team at Miami and landed an NFL job. He has three 8-win seasons in a row. (Bunting only posted 1 sinning season in 6 years) I think best case scenario for State Fans is seeing sanctions come down at UNC-CHeat, and THEN watching them fire ‘Ol Butch and have to scramble into a coaching search. I can’t imagine UNC being able to hire anyone with Butch’s ability amidst a scandal. Just my 2 cents…

It makes one wonder why the powers that be are not pushing for removing David, Baddour and Company. However, it they hire someone to clean up the program, how are the academic geniuses over there on the basketball team going to react. Don’t tell me that they aren’t getting some advantages with tutors who write papers for them.

You also wonder how Roy might react if his boys and his recruiting advantages were suddenly pulled right out from under him..

Maybe this scandal needs to go on for at least 25 more years.

  20. State Fan 07/18/2011 at 2:52 PM #

Chansky is right on. UNC is in the uncharted territory of having an agent-runner on staff. The NCAA might well want to set a major example.

Art on Butch’s work phone (lack of use) on 99.9 radio interview: (not exact wording)

Butch is a heck of a recruiter since he never apparently never made a call to the recruits.

  22. packhammer 07/18/2011 at 5:15 PM #

Says here Butch will be available for Q and A on Thursday. I bet he has a real practiced answer: ” I can’t talk about that”. Still could be interesting. We will see if any of our sportswriters have the guts to put some hard questions to him.

Chansky leveled some pretty heavy comments today. Good for him. He is one of the ones who got it ‘early’. Well, at least earlier than most or all of them. And they canned him. Wow. I hope he feels vindicated soon.

  24. packhammer 07/18/2011 at 10:00 PM #

After reading about the Chansky interview tonight I would like to revise my earlier post. So when does Butch call in sick from his bunker? No way he goes to that open media event on Thursday. Now even Joe Giglio wants to know who was paying tutor Wiley to write McAdoo’s paper after she was fired. Then he is going to want to know about where she got the money to pay off the parking fines. Then it will be the use of the personal phone and when is he going to release those records? No way he shows up for that.
