Butch proactively bans Twitter after Coples’ anti-gay tweet! (day 92)
Late Thursday afternoon Butch leapt into action and banned his players from using Twitter. Talk about closing the barn door after the horse has left! Here you can read the WTVD story.
The piece leads off:
CHAPEL HILL (WTVD) — UNC Head Football Coach Butch Davis banned his players from using Twitter on Thursday.
The move to ban use of the microblogging service comes after recent troubles with fullback Devon Ramsay.
He paraphrased a line from rapper Big Sean about “all his teammates gettin’ money so he calls them gang green.” A couple days later; he posted a highly questionable photo.
Defensive end Quinton Coples is also getting some heat for something he said on his account.
Before we get to Coples, I want to make a point about the convenient ”rap lyrics” explanation given to Ramsay’s tweet. Way back in July we were given the same excuse for Marvin’s tweets about Club Liv. You remember those:
Although apparently Marv was parroting rap lyrics, it was also true that he was in Miami that weekend at a huge agent party — contrary to what UNC partisans were telling us at the time. So let’s not be too quick to explain away Ramsay’s Tweet about his teammates getting money as pure fiction, particulary with the monumental scandals swirling around Chapel Hill right now.
Quinton Coples’ tweet, which I think is the real reason for Butch’s prohibition, was:
@QueCoples: a dude that looks gay just sat by one of my teammates i think he knows we laughing at him smh #stopthegayness
Good to know that the UNC-CH football players get together and laugh at people who they think look gay. What enlightened human beings they are. Certainly worthy of scholarships to a “Public Ivy” such as UNC. Is it more remarkable that Butch has to treat these college students like they are in 4th grade, or that the Twitter prohibition did not happen sooner, given that all of this might not be happening were it not for Marvin’s escapades made famous by Twitter (with some help from SFN).
Also tonight I wanted to pass along to you this site, where you can actually buy “I support Butch” t-shirts. Someone should email them and suggest that they make some in red and white! I think they could sell several thousand of those.

What was Ramsay’s tweet?
“his teammates gettin’ money so he calls them gang green.” per the WTVD story linked an excerpted.
According to the story above, Davis banned his players from using Twitter on Thursday. How about the other 6 days of the week?
^61, That is hysterical. No doubt someone on the team will tweet tomorrow.
I have to ask the obvious question. Why wait this long? The fact that Twitter comments from his merry band of idiots brought the attention of the NCAA would have been enough for most people to say enough is enough.
You would think that Mr. Miami Cleanup would know how to put his foot down and demand order. It makes you wonder how much he really was reaponsible for cleaning up Miami. Where is the guy who transformed the Miami program? All I have seen is indecision and a guy continually deflecting blame.
Damn you John Blake…
I “liked” the Support Butch Facebook page. What could be better for a State fan? They would have to continue to explain their program’s lack of integrity, it casts suspicion on the vaulted basketball program and most of all he hasn’t beaten us or really anyone else. My UNC-CH friends never dared ask why I did it. Don’t spent any time reading the wall comments, they are typical tarhole swill. They make you want to punch someone; but you don’t hit women. An enterprising Pack fan should produce the “I Support Butch” T-shirt in red with previous year’s score on the back.
I almost feel like throwing a bone to BMFD on this one. One would think it would go without saying that the players needed to watch their tweeting after all of MA’s fun this spring. Apparently he overestimated his players.
Hold up… Tweets and Facebook pages aren’t private? Who knew?
I can’t believe Coples would post a tweet like that about TJ Yates…
^ Coulda been Quinn or Little, with their matching earrings and all…
i cant wait for the ACLU to come down on UNC for limiting the civil liberties of these football players…. whats that? dont hold my breath?
serious question though, is that legal? can butch forbid his players from their right to free speech?
OldWuf, I did the same on my Facebook, and now I am getting those nasty updates. I agree, dont read the propaganda and kool-aid drinking comments, but it is funny. I hope my friends understand the statement I am making by supporting Davis – what a bunch of hypocrites.
I wonder if this will have an effect on recruiting. Will potential prospects see this as restricting and wish to go to a school (NC State) that allows them to use twitter?
Promote Raleigh as a ‘Free Twitter Zone’ !
DTF, I certainly think that it will have a negative impact on recruiting. Not only have they placed a ban on what is essentially an inalienable right of free speach, but they have also developed a sign out system in which the athletic department will be allowed to overtly scrutinize who, what, when and where the players do in terms of travel outside of their sport. Obviously, the University must show some way in which they are attempting to regain control, but this may seem a little overbearing to a young man about to experience the freedom of university life.
Pretty clever piece of opportunistic entrepreneurial spirit on the t-shirts. Wish I had thought of it, I could use the cash.
“PRO”active? Butch has done NOTHING proactive yet. Everything has been “RE”active. If Butch wanted to be proactive, he would have banned social media accounts the day he walked onto campus 4 years ago. Anyone think the reason Russell and Nate don’t have facebook pages is because they’re lazy or something?
^ I was employing satire.
packbackr04: Yes and no. He can’t really legally stop them from exercising free speech, but he can keep them from playing or kick them off the team entirely if they do not adhere to team rules (including not using twitter or even not making certain inflammatory statements publicly). But they can speak freely without fear of LEGAL repercussions or having constitutional rights taken away (assuming they don’t incriminate themselves, which for this crew is a big assumption).
Basically they can do it, but if they choose to do it it’s not without risking certain privileges.
I hope this web site does an post on this!
Charlotte Observer today has Roy Williams stating he believes the Bball program is clean. Goes on the say he had not heard anything from anyone about investigating the bball program and the players have not been interviews! WHAT?
Tell me if I am wrong but didn’t Baddour and Thorpe state that the entire athletic department was being reviewed? Roy Willaims is quoted in the Charlotte Observer as saying otherwise. Williams. “They told me we in great shape.” School has requested no meetings with me or the players.” In other words the bball program has not been reviewed at all!!! School has not even done a review with the coach?
Looks like the UNC self investigation into its entire athletic dept does not exist! What a bunch of liars! Don’t ask don’t tell is all the review the bball program has gotten!!!
Where’s Erskine?
I think I’m gonna join the “I support Butch” page on Facebook.

Hell…we all should.

Roy only knows what “they” tell him…He’s as big a dumbo as Butch…Nobody knows anything over there unless somebody else “tells them”. Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
I am buying a couple of those shirts to give to UNC family members for Xmas. Actually I am keeping one for myself, this is going to provide countless laughs in the future.
