Russell Wilson vs Philip Rivers QB Rating Watch
After last week’s game vs Western Carolina, Russell Wilson’s career QB rating of 144.27 had passed Philip Rivers’ career rating of 143.17. After the UCF game, Wilson returned the crown for the school’s career passer rating as his new rating now stands at 141.30. As the season goes on we will see if Wilson can regain and hang on to that record.

I’m hoping that Russell gets his feet back under him for Cincy on Thursday as he really did look a bit off; however, O’Leary took the gamble and certainly schemed his defense to try and limit the effectiveness of our QB in order to force us to beat them with our running game and defense. Thankfully, the Defense excelled.
What I found really interesting and isn’t listed here was our kickoff yardage. I think that we actually forced a touchback in the first quarter which I don’t think I’ve seen us do in a couple of years (I could be wrong, but that is my perception).
2 touchbacks IIRC.
I just added in the kickoff stats, thanks for the suggestion. Czajkowski has 2 touchbacks this year after none last year and his average is up from 58.3 last year to 62.8 so far this year.
I hate to be a Debby Downer, but “Shanks” should be a category under “Punting.”
shanks during critical moments would be one helluva stat
Our punting vs UCF got worse as the game went on, including a 20 yarder in the 3rd quarter and a 14 yarder in the 4th.
1st quarter: 40.5
2nd quarter: 37.0
3rd quarter: 34.0
4th quarter: 26.7
^ That is really a fascinating trend/observation. Sheesh
nit pick : I think you want “Total Defense”.
Interesting stat re: punting by quarters.
Do you get “tired” as a punter, or is that an indication that you have a punter who is a head case (i.e. as the game got tighter and more tense, his performance suffered)??
Ruiz will cost this team a game this year – wait and see.
Shanking punts in the fourth quarter seems to be a recurring theme of his.
Russell has 1 pick. He hung a pass in the 1st quarter of the UCF game down the left sidelne intended for Davis if I remember correctly.
Classof89 – I think the problem is that most coaching staffs don’t give a crap about supervising the kickers, so they are left to their own ‘workout routines.’
Those kickers/punters that I have observed don’t push themselves nearly enough, don’t spend many (any) hours in the weight room, and aren’t expected to do any running of any kind. Consequently, you have marshmellows out there kicking the ball and not having any accountability for the results.
You notice how many kickers/punters run off the field (or run around avoiding contact) after they kick the ball ?
Frank Beamer was about the first coach to put major emphasis on special teams play, and until our staff realizes the importance of special teams, they will continue to cost us valuable field position, and in turn, close games.
Ruiz punted 10 times. I am not sure if he was tired, but I am sure the pressure began to mount and mentally he missed two kicks. Also, they may have been putting more pressure on him as UCF adjusted as well.
Ruiz is never going to look like the UCF punter, however if he can hit one of his better efforts, then that usually means no return.
Also, on the shorter punts later in the game I know at least one was an opportunity to pin UCF inside the 20. Maybe more than once, so he was trying to avoid kicking it in the end zone. I think he left one short of the 20 IIRC.
This coaching staff understands the importance of special teams. They have said as much in interviews…..especially during last year.
I am considering putting money on NCSU for this game….I think if we do have a disadvantage in being rested it wont overcome the homefield advantage of CF on a Thursday night. I just dont see us losing this game. We had to many scares vs UCF to get complacent or cocky….Both sides of the ball are looking to improve after the UCF performance. The only concern is maybe UCF found a formula to stop us. But I dont think Cincy has the right strengths to take advantage of anything like that.
Here are Ruiz’s punts from the UCF game:
1st quarter
Ruiz, J. punt 43 yards to the UCF30
Ruiz, J. punt 38 yards to the UCF44
2nd quarter
Ruiz, J. punt 39 yards to the UCF20
Ruiz, J. punt 35 yards to the UCF23
3rd quarter
Ruiz, J. punt 44 yards to the UCF22
Ruiz, J. punt 38 yards to the UCF18
Ruiz, J. punt 20 yards to the UCF17
4th quarter
Ruiz, J. punt 33 yards to the UCF31
Ruiz, J. punt 33 yards to the UCF25
Ruiz, J. punt 14 yards to the NCS49
Maybe I am naive but is it really that hard to find someone who can punt the ball over 40yrds on a regular basis. Time to get my son practicing punting. Sounds like an easy route to free college.
Thanks, WV, for the stats.
DU, I can live with shorter punts that pin an opponent inside the 20 – those are awesome ! But I can’t see how ‘tired’ a punter can get if he is properly pushing himself to get stronger and better all year long, just like ‘real’ football players.
If he can’t keep his focus for 10 plays per game, we’re in trouble…
Glad to see Overgaard back in. Why did he come out in the UCF game?
Thanks WV. Again, the only really bad punt was the 14 yarder. That was a crucial moment so obviously that is unacceptable. But the rest of the punts weren’t all that bad. I think we are 8th in net punting in the conference at this juncture and that is with a 14 yard shank and a 20 yard punt where clearly Ruiz layed off of it pin the opponent inside the 20.
I absolutely LOVE the QB ratings competition. I don’t think there’s any doubt that RW was better as a freshman and sophomore, but Rivers was other-worldly good as a junior. Wilson is certainly not off to the same start, and it’s very disheartening. But it’s only a trend if it’s repeated this week. Let’s hope not.
Sorry to seem dense, but what are the “high” and “low” for the offense and defense categories?
Offense
Points Per Game: 38.0
High: 48
Low: 28
Defense
Points Per Game: 14.0
High: 21
Low: 7
Those are the highs and lows for points scored by State and our opponents.
I have some more QB ratings stats, I’ll try to put together an entry on that when I get a chance.
OldSchoolD…That wasn’t a pick because the defender came down with the ball out of bounds…though I’d unofficially count it…it was a horrible throw
Thanks. That’s good information! Suggestion: Also post the game highs and lows for offensive rushing and passing and defensive rushing and passing against in addition to the overall averages.
Nice feature.
Thanks for putting this information together.
