Basketball Adds Syracuse to 2010/2011 schedule?

According to a poster on the Pack Pride message boards, Sidney Lowe announced at the Asheville WPC Caravan a two game series with Syracuse starting with a trip to the Carrier Dome next season. This adds to what appears to be the most exciting out-of-conference schedule in a long time.

It was announced last week that the Pack will go on the road to face Wisconsin as part of the annual ACC/Big 10 Challenge. Additionally, six of the eight teams in the Charleston Classic are official with Georgetown and NC State headlining the field. The 2009 tournament included four teams from BCS conferences, so it will be interesting to see who ESPN adds to round out the field. Other teams already participating are Wofford, East Carolina, Charlotte and George Mason. This event is held November 18th-21st in the College of Charleston’s basketball arena in downtown Charleston. This sounds like a great opportunity for a road trip with the football team visiting UNC that weekend. The arena only holds 5100 people and has been well attended in the past.

While the game against Georgetown isn’t guaranteed to happen, Lowe has won two tournaments already beating major conference teams in both events so making it to the finals to play Georgetown seems highly possible. That would give the Pack at least four games against marquee opponents in Georgetown, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Syracuse with three of the those games not played in the confines of the RBC Center.

When is the last time NC State played four programs of that caliber in the regular season?

As I said in the forums, this is only good news for the Wolfpack — assuming that we can be more than competitive in these contests.

First of all, it is excellent exposure.

Secondly, it is never too early to think about piling up good OOC wins for the NCAA resume. This is something some teams (think Va Tech) never seem to do and as a result they go to the NIT even with a decent conference record.

^I agree. What I really hope to see us control is the quality of the cupcake teams on our schedule. Easier said than done maybe, but it has a huge impact on our RPI. IIRC, the highest SOS under Sendek was in a year where we didn’t play many marquee teams. The key was that we didn’t play a lot of 200+ and 300+ teams.

The key was that we didnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt play a lot of 200+ and 300+ teams.

You’re stealing my thunder from the semi-annual OOC SOS review. ๐Ÿ˜‰

You’re also absolutely correct. The top of the OOC schedule gives interesting games for the fans. But the positive effect on RPI of playing those teams gets quickly negated when you play so many teams with absolutely horrible records.

^so that will be the big question on the schedule…did we eliminate the 300+ and tone down the number of 200+ games.

This is good news. A friend of mine is a big Syracuse fan. He’s always running down NC State. No respect at all (not that we’ve earned any). I think he’s still mad about us beating them in back-to-back years in football when they had McNabb. He tends to hold eternal grudges against teams that beat his Orangemen.

Anyway, I’d sure love to see the Pack go up there and stick it to them in the Carrier Dome. I’m not going to talk any junk, until we win (if we win). I’d rather not put a bunch of words out there that I’d have to eat later.

But speaking of our tough OOC schedule, maybe this guarantees us at least a #4 seed in the NIT tournament if we finish 16-16. And a lot of favorable officiating. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Speaking of that game at Syracuse w/Hodge…anyone else remember when he reached out and rubbed the other player’s head and pissed the guy off?

I’m thinking Sid’s well aware of the importance of OOC scheduling, and now that he’s got some talent he’s ready to crank up the quality. I like it a lot.

Plus, playing a couple of Big East traditional heavyweights is great. It exposes us in large markets (hopefully ‘exposed’ in a good way) and challenges the team to get conference ready sooner. (rather than waiting till February)

More reasons to get giggly over basketball season.

Scheduling the 150-200 rpi teams is key…as long as you don’t have to make a return trip.

The Syracuse fans I work with are very knowledgeable about basketball. They understand NC State history which surprised me, even the younger generation. My buddy in fact admires NC State and hope it returns to glory.

They are different from Duke and UNC fans who only know they are good every year but have no idea about where they came from nor have any respect or in-depth interest of the game. They don’t have a deeper meaning and true appreciation for the game. In my experience, this is not the case with Syracuse fans.

Isn’t Boeheim and the Cuse known for soft OOC schedules? Maybe that’s part of what pulled the 2 teams together …

  12. bradleyb123 05/19/2010 at 6:28 PM #

Yes, I remember a few years ago, Cuse had 20+ wins before suffering their first loss. They played a lot of creampuffs during that stretch.

Hopefully they THINK we’re just another creampuff, and end up being shocked by the new & improved WOLPFACK! ๐Ÿ˜‰
