UNC 93, NC State76

Tar Heel fans, who made the trip to the RBC Center for the first two rounds of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, turned up in pockets. With their light blue and the pink in the N.C. State student section — an homage to Kay Yow — the place looks like a maternity ward.

Just a guess, but that is the most UNC fans in N.C. State’s building for a State-Carolina game in 15 years. A 15-point favorite, the Heels did not disappoint their traveling fan base.

Note: It’s not like the 2003 State-Carolina game at the Smith Center, which was a virtual home game for State, but there’s a good amount of blue sprinkled throughout the building, especially the upper deck, which mostly has been empty this season.

Alright i’ve been lurking here a long while, but never until now posted. While I agreed with most here about some of Sid’s horrid coaching habits at the beginning of the season, I do not think this game reflects upon him or his coaching staff at all. I was there, and could see him motioning to his players to get back on transition defense, and very frustrated when they did not do so.

While this team still has a long way to go, we ARE improving, and we WILL win a few more games this year. The only way I would consider calling for Sid’s head this year is if we lost to NC Central, or Virginia, both of which we should win. I know there are no moral victories, and I don’t believe in them, but I will say we are not a pathetic team like I thought we were at the beginning of the season. And unlike last years team, we did NOT mail it in tonight, we fought hard all the way, just had some mental lapses in there.

    Ben McCauley is AWESOME!!!!!

Oh, and for any UNC fans that might give you grief about this game…just throw two numbers back at them…..41-10!

  2. GoldenChain 01/31/2009 at 9:36 PM #

The ADs have let the fans down in basketball for 18 years.
I’m surprised half the darn building wasn’t full of unxers!

Amazing to me that there is an entire generation of fans who have no idea what it is to win an ACC tourney.

Redwolf, welcome, and with all due respect, I do not think the majority of NCSU fans are calling for Sid’s firing this season. What most, including myself, seem to be concerned about is the relative lack of progress of the program. That can all change if the recruits coming in can do something great. That’s precisely why he deserves more time. But if next year is like the last 2 years and the way this one is shaping up, we’re in trouble.

I agree with you that I think we can win a few more games in the league this year. An NCAA bid is highly unlikely at this stage at 2-5 in the league with two games against Wake left and a trip to Chapel Hill. Not saying we can’t win any of those, but it’s unlikely. An NIT bid is a much more reasonable goal to shoot for, and I think if we play like we did today it is certainly possible.

And nobody is questioning Sidney’s desire to win. The real question is, can he? So far, he hasn’t.

  4. redwolf86 01/31/2009 at 9:54 PM #

I certainly am not expecting any miracles, and yes a NIT bid is the appropriate goal for the time being.

I am with you on the Sid needs more time idea. If he still cannot improve things after the end of next yr, then I do believe its time we think about moving in a new direction.

i was one of the most negative people about this team at the beginning of the season, and if I can come around and realize that we are playing better (still a long way to go) then I think anyone should see this improvement.

If it turns out that Lowe is not the right person for the job, I just hope coaching search can be done more efficiently than the last time around….

  5. phillypacker 01/31/2009 at 9:56 PM #

Did anybody notice what recruits were there? Was Wall?

  6. RBCRowdy 01/31/2009 at 10:03 PM #

John Wall was there. He must have a standing offer of tickets at will call or something. He is a frequent attendee at the RBC Center this year.

I am just frustrated…I guess that is life as a Wolfpack basketball fan…20 years since we last won anything…1989!….Amazing..but I still do love Wolfpack basketball no matter what…Anyways we have to give Lowe his 5 years…After the 5 years I would hope an extensive analysis is done to consider whether or not to extend his time..But who am I kidding…our admins and BOT could give a rat’s ass if NC State was good in basketball..We are stuck in cruise control on irrelevance and I see nothing to change that in basketball…As someone posted in another thread, NC State has as much basketball tradition as The University of San Francisco or Depaul…We had tradition…now we just exist!

  8. phillypacker 01/31/2009 at 10:35 PM #

Just a word of encouragement, I’ve been attending State basketball games since 1971. You cannot win without top tier talent. You can’t do squat without stellar guard play. This season, State was in the mix for three of the top prospects left on the board (Cousins, Wall and Favors). That says something. He has a very strong class coming in for the next two years. Over the next two years, Lowe will have more top tier talent coming in (Brown, Howell, Leslie and Harrow) than in any class for a long, long time. We all saw what Lowe did with an Engin Atsur in the lineup. That was an incredible run. I think there will be a big upturn in the next two years.

From 1973 to 1989, State had a fabulous basketball tradition. I truly believe that tradition will return.

The thing I’m most upset about is the team defense. I’m sure I’ve missed it, but I can’t remember seeing anyone take a charge all year. When opponents get around our defenders, our other players are not stepping in to help. The contrast with the Heels defense was night and day in this game. I love Coach Sid, but my somewhat educated basketball brain is telling me that our guys aren’t grasping the importance of some hoops 101 concepts like help defense. I want to believe that this will get turned around, but even though Heels are obviously good offensively, our defense was REALLY bad today. That’s a major problem.

  10. wolfpack95 01/31/2009 at 11:02 PM #

I don’t believe that there were as many UNC fans at this game as there were for 2008 contest.
The most noticeable pockets of UNC’ers were going into and coming out of the 2nd level suites. A lot of baby blue on the 2nd level.

  11. jbpackfan 01/31/2009 at 11:05 PM #

Just wanted to say that Courtney Fells was awesome, and played with more heart than anyone in this program since Hodge. The guy could barely run down the court in the first half. I don’t want to see any more criticism of this guy ever. He has played is ass off all year with an injured ankle and he deserves our respect and admiration.

  12. Noah 01/31/2009 at 11:30 PM #

I love it. In the same breath, we’re bitching about how long it’s been since we won anything — and then conclude that if Lowe doesn’t win (not this season) by NEXT season, well…we’ll start to think about whether or not we need to make a change.

And hey, getting commitments, signed LOIs and enrolled players? Totally overrated. We’re in the MIX for some good players. That’s enough, right?

Now let’s get back to bitching about how we haven’t won anything recently. These things aren’t related or anything.

Stockholm Syndrome at its absolute purest…

  13. SMD 01/31/2009 at 11:33 PM #

As usual, Noah is spot on.

I would love to know why Phillypack thinks our tradition will return. I’ve seen no facts or evidence to indicate otherwise. We have once again flubbed a coaching transition. In terms of ever having the relevance that we once had, the program is dead. A win today would not have changed that.

  14. leewolf 01/31/2009 at 11:42 PM #

Overall, the game was about what I expected, maybe a little better really. It was lost in the first half when UNC finished on that run and we never could close the gap back. This team has improved over a year ago and even over the course of this season but the talent gap is still pretty wide between us and the top of the conference. I have no qualms with Sidney’s game plan or substitution pattern today, I thought (when executed properly) he called a good game. If this team can make it to 6-10 or 7-9, then he deserves another year and will have to make it to the Big Dance in 2010.

On another note, thanks to the great Karolina Klass who decided to paint “Cancer Rules” over the Kay Yow mural on the Free Expression Tunnel. What a bunch of low-lifes.

  15. Dogbreath 01/31/2009 at 11:52 PM #

Monteith…err Oblinger (and his pathetic lapdog, Lee Fowler) is halfway home toward making us the VCU of North Carolina. If he can manage to get rid of Tom O’Brien, he will have succeeded in killing both revenue sports for good.

  16. wufpup76 01/31/2009 at 11:57 PM #

I’m proud of the guys for fighting back in the second half today …

We got killed inside and in transition which has been stated over and over … We missed quite a few on the inside ourselves

I actually thought the Holes played one of their better defensive games of this season … We had our chances to get back in it, but too many missed opportunities … Combine that with some spotty defense and a team that makes us pay for it by shooting 60% and I’m just proud that we even got it within 7 at one point

I thought effort was there, just not our day as we lost to a team playing well – Maybe next time … I thought there were some missed calls, but they did not / would not have (had) an impact on the outcome

About Holes fans being there, I have had 3 open seats next to me for EVERY game this season until today … Guess who filled them today … I understand the frustration / apathy towards the program, but that did make me feel ashamed … Kinda takes the luster about making fun of them for being fairweather

As I stated in the previous thread, Ben and Brandon didn’t have the greatest of games but they made the year for me with their actions at the end of today’s game … When’s the last time we actually had some sack and not let them (or anyone) do crap like Copeland attempted today? Seriously? I’m so sick of this “not ok to stand up for yourself” attitude that permeates NC State … I’m very proud of Ben and fired up over it … Let’s see more of it – it’s ok to proud to be from NC State

    Go Pack

Meh, the whole opposition in the RBC thing is overrated…didn’t look that bad on TV. That’s what matters anyway, right? I mean hell, it wasn’t nearly as bad as 2003 when we took over the Dean Dome and you could hear the “WOLF-PACK” chant loud and clear on television (I was there yelling like hell BTW).

Thank GOD for the football team drubbing Carolina 41-10. We needed that one after what they did to us today and (more importantly) what they’ll do to us in Chapel Hill. If it wasn’t for that win, I don’t know WHAT we’d do.

Honestly, I didn’t think today was that bad. If we could play transition defense and hit some key shots down the stretch, we may have had a shot.

Lastly, McCauley should have murdered that bastard on the way to the basket. That fugger would have limped back to the locker room after I got done with him. Anyone who tells you Carolina is all class if full of shit. Lowe should have been the one “instructing” Roy at the end of the game. I would have let his gray-haired ass hold it after that ridiculousness.

    I hate Carolina.

  18. ryebread 02/01/2009 at 1:13 AM #

I hate Carolina — period. I think the last play summed up the game well. BM had his best play all day and that was laying down the law on an idiot who was trying to posterize us. From the perspective of an alum, I loved that the kid had the passion to go and do exactly what I would have done. At the same time, that was the highlight of the game for us.

We played hard, gritty and feisty, but we just don’t have enough talent to beat UNC. They were faster, better dribblers and better shooters at every single position than we were today (well, outside of Fells). It’s hard to beat a team like that.

Also, I’d personally tell posters to lay off of Sid. I was there and it seemed like the man tried virtually everything in the book. Some worked, some didn’t, but he did NOT pull a “deer in the headlights” ah la HWSNBN. The man (and his team) went down swinging. Given the considerable talent gap (that we knew existed before the season ever started), that’s all I can ask.

Noah-You need to start coaching. You have all the answers.

  20. packpowerfan 02/01/2009 at 1:23 AM #

The Free Expression Tunnel was hit tonight. The Kay Yow Memorial Mural was defaced heavily, with a baby blue mustache painted on her face, and phrases like “cancer rules” underneath it. I had to mention this after listening to all the crap about “Ben McCauley should be suspended for a game…State has no class…blah blah”. I hate that pathetic excuse for a school.

  21. Astral Rain 02/01/2009 at 2:36 AM #

I can’t criticize the effort today, just the talent level.

If Sid can get the players, we’ll be fine. It might not be with Sid as coach though.

  22. wufpup76 02/01/2009 at 3:05 AM #

^^Sounds like somebody needs to get their ass beat

Ohh, I forgot – it’s only “classy” when they do something

  23. waxhaw 02/01/2009 at 7:50 AM #

In the last 2 games, I’ve seen Costner draw at least 2 charges……they just weren’t called.

I’m not sure what he did to the refs but they aren’t cutting him any slack.

  24. BassPacker 02/01/2009 at 7:52 AM #

Lets see if the local press picks up on the vandals who hit the Yow Memorial with the Cancer Rules remarks like they did with the Obama stuff at the Expression Tunnel. Truely, a class-less act, and if it was UNC students, lets see how many think they should be expelled from school.

    Man I hate Carolina……….fans !

  25. wolfonthehill 02/01/2009 at 8:14 AM #

The defacing of Kay Yow in the tunnel is far more objectionable and unconscionable than what was done election night. And I’m a liberal, and a strong Obama supporter.

While the commission is looking into hate crimes on campus, I think it’d be appropriate to investigate this incident a bit more, as well.

Nothing to say about the game, except that uncch still has not learned to win with class. Two years ago, Psycho T goes up against Duke with 10 seconds left in a game that was already decided… outcome? A well-deserved broken nose. Yesteray, Copeland tries the same BS with 2 seconds to go… outcome? Lucky it wasn’t a broken nose… and why again didn’t we shoot free throws if he was ejected?
