Preparing for a Full Night of Harrison Beck

As a devout reader of the hilarious NFL Blog known to fans as KSK, I can’t help but think of their Rex Grossman posts everytime Harrison Beck enters the game – particularly this one (warning – more bad language than a BJD95 live blog that involves UNC or Duke).

I’m certainly glad Beck is taking the reins Saturday, since Daniel Evans or punting on first down (I’d prefer the latter) are our only alternatives. But I would suggest taking Tom O’Brien’s lead and keeping your sense of humor front and center.

    Go easy on Daniel Evans. I know he is not what any of us would want in a starting quarterback, but his heart is with NC State, he did give us a miracle win over BC, followed up by a win over FSU, and he lead us in our four game winning streak last year, the only four wins over D-1 teams.
    I am hoping that if Harrison implodes or (God forbid) goes down, D. Evans has just a little more of that magic left so that he can go out with a positive bang. And then Russell comes back the next week for the rest of the season and we all live happily ever after.

    Prepare for a lot of alcohol. We could make a drinking game for it! Shots for every interception! I can guarantee good times… and.. well… possibly alcohol poisoning.

    I need a tshirt that says “FUCK IT I’M GOING DEEP” with his number on the back.

    Harrison Beck had 3 possessions against ECU…there were 2 TOs in 2 of those possessions.

    On a lighter note, Harrison reminds me of the call center in Juarez that I was indirectly in charge of. Go figure, they were struggling grasping our customer service requirements. Because of these difficulties, we had to visit the facility. When it got really slow, I told them – I tried to motivate them and let them know just how important it was for them to improve and some suggestions on how to do it: “folks, now is the time to brush up on your English. Read the USA today, talk amongst yourself in English – practice typing. This has to improve.” They made great eye contact and appeared to understand everything.

    I went right out of the room and came back to them joking around in Spanish.

    They knew what we expected and they were told how to improve, but they could never turn the corner. It was as if they didn’t care if we went elsewhere. And yep, that call center lasted 4 more months before we closed it for good.

    Tale of the tape said that Beck was #3 on RIVALS list of top pro style QB.

    We joke about him some, but if didn’t have to play behind a CTC recruited, TOB salvaged OL he could have had more success to this point.

    The WR’s havn’t been outstanding while he’s been here either, last year we had a converted RB in Blackmon and a Sr. who was banged up all year (Dunlap)

    Grahm is still learning the position and the same player (Jarvis Williams) who made the great grab in the end zone stone handed a forty yard pass on the ten later in the game.

    It’s not like the stars have to line up for Beck to light up secondaries.

    He would improve 1000% if he would quit throwing off his back foot and just step up to throw the ball. He has shown he has the ability and accuracy to throw the ball – he just needs to work on his delivery, IMHO.

    They could do like the Dolphins who lined up Ronnie Brown at QB several times (8 I think). Very effective. Gives them an extra blocker. Allows for some trickery.

    Ole fart here again…
    Let’s get BEHIND Beck for a week instead of on top of him. Let’s trust our coaches one more time. TOB seems to think Beck will be alright. Last week, an INT off a deflected ball that coulda woulda shoulda been caught. Beck was stopped, stood up and stripped of the ball. Looked like he had both hands on the ball. On Sunday the whistle would have blown and there would be no fumble. But the refs were more interested in “giving him the business” ala Eugene on the “Personal Foul” call.

    Beck lowered his shoulder and, get this, PUNISHED a tackler against W&M. Mostly people perform ut to the level of their expections. Sports psychologists suggest visualization for optimum success. Perhaps we could visualize Beck making good decisions, not bad ones. I know it would be a stretch for some of us who have psychopathic needs to crap on our own players, but as the little girl in Alice’s Restaurant said at the beginning of the movie, “……….”

    I’m going to have fun w/ this on Sat. night and hope for the best … At the very least, we should see some exciting plays … Ol’ Harrison might even pull it off Saturday night

    Is there any play more exciting in football than the bomb (other than game-winning plays a la Andre Brown)? … By Sat. night I will be nice and toasty and ready to declare:

    “F–k It. I’m Throwing It Downfield.” “I like throwing the ball long. It makes my **** hard.”

    Priceless.

    Which is why we should just take a shot every time he throws a pick, and 2 shots if it’s returned for a touchdown. No ifs, coulds, shoulds there! 😀 Only straight results!

    I’m behind Beck, I like a quarterback that has the balls to throw into double coverage thinking he can get it in. On average it probably doesn’t win a lot of games, but it can lead to blowouts if the ball is falling right… so statistically, a win could happen just because of the risk factor.

    Some of you really just have issues with the blog format. Almost all blogs are irreverant – its just the nature of the medium.

    Maybe the lights will come on for Beck. Maybe the receivers will get themselvles open all night long. Maybe USF’s anticipation and expectation of catching mutiple interceptions will allow Brown, Underwood, and Eugene to find gaping holes to run through. Maybe the defense will carry the momentum from those goal line stands last week into this game and dominate the line of scrimmage all night long. Maybe we will not have an injury at the point guard position in baseketball this season!!!

    Beck had a couple of rough breaks Saturday. His only mistake as I saw was that he was alittle off on the interception ball and he paid a price much greater than deserved. On the fumble, Greywolf is absolutely correct. He was stood by one player (all forward progress stopped) and the ball was beat (not pulled or wrestled) out by a second. This is supposed to be illegal. He had two hands on the ball and there was absolutely nothing he could do, after moving the team nicely down field, and specifically making a nice tough run. I’m surprised that he’s caught so much flack on this one from the fan base; I’m not sure what he could have done differently on this particular play.

    My first instinct was one of disaster regarding RW’s situation, but I honestly was looking for more time for Harrison coming into last game (apparently TOB initially agreed). Surprisingly pleased by Russell’s play, but Harrison appears to be gaining some confidence as well. Hopefully the breaks this Saturday has not set him dramatically back. We are close to having a couple of reasonable QB’s at the moment, if we can only keep #16 healthy.

    Missing Nate is another issue. Hopefully Maddox has had a great week of practice. South Fla is still very beatable.

    The one thing that always happens when Beck is in the game (Besides an Interception) is he WILL move the offense. It is a really weird feeling but it’s as if the offense comes alive when Beck is in the game. All of the sudden WR’s are open all over the place and Beck finds them for big yardage.
    It appears the offensive has confidence again and players are excited? Don’t know why but this seems to be the case more times than not. I think we all wish Beck made fewer bad decisions on the long ball but truthfully he knows the passing game.

    I hope he has an awesome game on Thursday because I honestly look forward to watching him throw the ball. It is frustrating after the interception occurs but I find myself looking forward to the next series of downs just to see it happen again with the HOPE of making it work.

    It’s really a shame because when Beck is clicking and the offensive is moving it is an awesome sight. Maybe having an entire game to play will give him a chance to get the interceptions out of the way and start playing consistent. A few plays here and there makes it easy for everyone to pick out only the mistakes. The high risk/reward game is still a fun one to watch!

    The article mentions a TOB remark that is likely to be used against us.

    All of them are on the defensive side of the ball, and Selvie is amongst them. Things could even out just enough to make it interesting. Beck will almost certainly throw INTs, but you kind of have to accept them with his style of play. He should get a couple of deep balls caught as well hopefully they will even out. The bad news is they are tough against the run so far, though not against Backs like Brown and Eugene. The flip side is they are suspect against pass, so Harrison may have a memorable night.

    That’s unlike TOB to dig at a team like that. He HAS to have something planned. He just doesn’t do anything on a whim.

    Every player on the team should be more confident and feeling better about the team after last Saturday. That can’t but help Beck/Evans or whoever is in at QB.

    Beck reminds me of the days of Sonny Jurgenson and Billy Kilmer with the Redskins. They had big bellies, but liked to “fling the football”!

    Thanks, colapack. Cool piece of Jericho. Just like with Philip, I remember the talk of how his un-NFL-ness would hinder him, but he’s showing, especially this year, that he can produce. It’s always great to see a guy like him work hard and succeed. It’s great to have guys like that to represent your university.
