Changes Coming to N&O Sports Section
I recognize the value in the synergies created by merging many of the duplicative functions created by having operations in both Raleigh and Charlotte; but, the N&O’s Sports Page had easily become the best part of the newspaper while the Charlotte Observer‘s sports page is rife with bias, off-base coverage and one of the worst I have ever seen.
Of all the fanbases out there, this move should scare NC State fans the most. Charlotte has a history of misunderstanding NC State while taking an absurdly adversarial approach to the Wolfpack when they choose to cover State – which is disproportionately less than the size and magnitude of NC State fans and followers would warrant as the area’s largest University.
The N&O will merge its sports, political and research departments with those in Charlotte. An editor in Charlotte will oversee the sports report; the political reporters will be managed by an editor in Raleigh; and the research team will be led from Raleigh.
The N&O will begin producing only two daily editions: one for the Triangle and one for the rest of its circulation area.

With the new sports editor being in Charlotte, I can’t wait to read about a Hole 3-star football recruit who is actually an “overlooked” 5-star player based on potential! I really look forward to reading this EVERY SINGLE DAY …
Yeah, if this screws up the sports page, I may cancel my subscription. Especially for the MSM, the N&O’s stable of sportswriters is actually very, very good.
At least for the MLB, scores for games ending after midnight are already missed. There are also some weird situations where a game has a box score but the result isn’t represented in the standings.
Much like stock listings, sports scores are just delivered better online.
It will be hard to take if their Wolfpack coverage actually gets worse than it already is. A Raleigh based paper just ought to do better at covering the Raleigh based university.
Now the UNX fans can complain about the UNCC conspiracy against them.
So sports reporting moves to a town with 2 pro teams, and no college sports to speak of – leaving an metro area with 3 fully staffed college programs, and one pro-team, with next to nothing?
It is exactly this kind of diminished content that will kill the paper editions of newspapers. They are behind the curve to start, and now they are perusing a path that will lead to their own destruction. Gosh, how dumb can you be?
I can’t wait to see more coverage of the Panthers, and whatever the basketball team there is called. I wait with baited anticipation.
I wonder if this will drive the last of the old war horses out of Nash Square – particularly Tudor.
Just another reason to NOT take the N&O. After the snow job they did on JTV why should any State fan ever support them financially……
Another stupid move by the Noise & Disturber
I even think logistics will be quite absurd… most sports are closer to Raleigh than to Charlotte. NCSU, UNC, Duke, ECU etc.
It’s a shame both papers are owned by McClatchey(sp). The Charlotte Observer sports mentality isn’t geared to college, but rather to Racing and Pro Sports due to all the outsiders that have moved in and have no college allegiance. They have atleast been giving High School atheletics some decent pub. Their HS Football coverage was much better in the old days. At any rate, any college coverage you see is going to be slanted toward Chapel Hill anyway.I hope the N & O hasn’t been going through the massive makeover that the Clt O has. Never know what you’re picking up next except that you’ll be picking up a liberal rag.
No UNX fan will ever complain considering that even 49ers fans in Charlotte sometimes have a hard time finding stories about their teams in the midst of all the baby blue ink.
I mean when you can say that even Caulton Tudor has moved closer to the center in the last couple of years, this decision is truly disturbing.
This is absolutely no surprise with McClatchey and I’ve been “harping” on their virtual monopoly on print media in both Carolinas for several years. Just wait until they tell the folks in Columbia that reporting on the Gamecocks will come out of Charlotte. Although that might be an improvement with the sportswriters in Columbia.
I came close to dropping the subscription to the local paper last week that is also owned by them and probably will when this subscription expires.
there’s more on the way. last week, in Greensboro, folks were talking
about the Greensboro News and Record cutting out the Saturday paper,
by publishing a “weekend” edition. it’s only a rumor.
