Barnes Says No to Kentucky, Gets Raise

By: StateFans  Apr 22, 2007

General, NCS Basketball

Rick Barnes passed on the Kentucky job in the short amount of time between Bill Donovan’s rejection and the Wildcats’ hiring of Billy Gillispie. (What it must be like to have a prepared and nimble Athletics Director?)

It now becomes public that Texas didn’t just expect the loyalty based on the raise Barnes ‘earned’ last year. Rick got a $200k raise and now pulls down a cool $2 million per year in Austin.

While we are on the topic of both Barnes and Gillispie, you may find the following two pieces interesting.

Before you click on them, you need to realize that they are both written by Gregg Dickhead Doyel. Therefore, we understand if you choose not to click the links.

* The Barnes of March deprives us of Durant

* Deep in the heartless Texas – Barnes & Gillispie

I’m not going to click on them, not entirely because of the author, but mainly because they are two of the most shallow, intellectually deprived titles I’ve ever seen.

  2. hoop Says:

Against my better judgment, I did click on them. The Doylie pieces are brutally negative. But they are also mostly true. It’s too bad he feels he has to act like Britney Spears just to grab attention from people.

  3. GrandWolf Says:

With respect to Gregg “DH” Do-yell’s article, I wonder how the good folks at Arkansas will appreciate being referred to as Country Bumpkins. Sounds like hate speech to me. Didn’t someone just lose their broadcasting job over hate speech? :)

I think I will write the CBS Sports sponsors.

  4. VaWolf82 Says:

A broke clock (analog) is right twice a day. If both of the Idiot’s pieces are “mostly true”, then he has only tied a brock clock. BTW, thanks for the warning so that I didn’t increase his “circulation”.

It must be sad to be a writer than has to stoop to insulting someone just to get them to come and read your stuff. If you think that I am stretching the truth, here is some stuff from his “bio” at CBS Sportsline:

Doyel’s an idiot, but you knew that. That’s why you’re here, right? To find out, “Who is this idiot?”….

Misunderstood, Doyel lives life by two phrases. He wrote neither of them, because as anyone will tell you, he’s not good enough to come up with this stuff himself.

The first comes from My Name Is by Eminem: “I don’t give a f—, dog. God sent me to piss the world off.” …

Once again, The Idiot is wrong. I think that we understand him very well.

It seems like Barnes gave our job more thought than UK job. Interesting, especially since we’re all bad fans and our school has no baskeball tradition.

  6. coppertop Says:

Yep, not clicking to increase his traffic. I’d rather not read about the next school/coach he is going to bash, once is enough for me.

  7. choppack1 Says:

I’m watching w/ interest to see how Barnes does at Tejas. Part of me wonders if he’s hit his ceiling. I think he hit a ceiling at Clemson, one may have emerged now in Austin. We’ll see – he has a remarkable record of consistency – and he’s had lots of talent or lots of experience – but rarely any of the 2 together.

  8. WolfPup35 Says:

Not interested in anything that talking haircut has to say.

  9. noah Says:

That Gregg Doyle continues to find employment outside of “fry cook” or “manure shoveller” is one of the great mysteries of our world.

  10. Pack92 Says:

At some point noah even unx grads will get those jobs so it’s really a waiting game. You forgot the guys who pick up the trash.

  11. noah Says:

The guys who pick up trash perform a tremendous service.

    Doyle? Not so much.

  12. MrPlywood Says:

Doyel is a few notches below Roadkill Removal Engineer…

I have never understood the personal philosophy of being “an idiot”, controversial, or a blowhard just to attract attention. But I guess that’s what you have to do when you’re compensating for lack of talent…

  13. CedarGloveWulf Says:

    I like him.
He really has excellent insight and smart comments.
He did support the great one after all.

  14. Texpack Says:

I won’t read the articles linked, but I would suspect that Barnes’ raise had more to do with keeping him ahead of Gillispie than anything else. The UT honchos weren’t about to let the Aggies out do them in the salary war. Just a Texas perspective on the situation.

  15. packbackr04 Says:

not trying to jack the thread, but thought this was worth mention. Apppears as though, TOB has picked up another kicker…..

“I saw him make eight field goals in a row from 56 yards,” Wolf said to the Times-Argus. “That’s the kind of ability this guy has.”

the kid, who is from boston, got cleared by the NCAA for late eligibilty and will enroll at state this summer. just like in bball, its good to have some competition for playing time…. and even more important for both bball and fball, we are recruiting players that fit our needs. not just “athletes” or run 4.5 fortys, or 6′6″ wing players, that just roam the perimiter. the days of positionless players at NC State are over. praise be to god

  16. packbackr04 Says:

btw^ props to rivals for the info above…. its not premium info in case anyone wanted to read the article.

  17. WolftownVA81 Says:

I fear that if premier programs like Kentucky get the public cold shoulder than people will forget that our BB search was totally bungled and that LF’s performance will somehow be viewed as typical/acceptable. I also didn’t feel the need to click on the link.

  18. redfred2 Says:

    Wolftown

I would bet good money that Lee has already some discussion about that within the tight inner circle.

  19. CedarGroveWolf Says:

“or 6′6″ wing players, that just roam the perimiter. the days of positionless players at NC State are over. praise be to god”

some never miss an opportunity to bash, even when there isn’t one, just create one.

  20. CedarGloveWulf Says:

I am flumoxed as to how anyone can crack on the great one.
He led us to the greatest NCAA stretch on our history. He brought in the greatest stretch of talent ever (he cannot control whether they leave or now) and he left us with a great talent base. What more can you ask of your coach? Too many negative Nancies out there.

  21. WolftownVA81 Says:

Very good Glove. I admit to being a “Nancie” in this instance.

  22. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc Says:

“He led us to the greatest NCAA stretch on our history.”

That he did there Cedar. It is an indisputable fact. Just like the new Airbus now offers more SEATS than ever before, so is the same with the SEEDS in the NCAA tournament. Both, set up so more and more people, can simply tag along for the ride.
