FSU Football Coaches Get Big Pay Spikes

We talked about the pay of certain basketball coaches earlier this morning

…and we highlighted this Chuck Amato situation late last week (see 850TheBuzz’s comments today)…

…so, we thought it would make some sense to blend the two and talk about the coin that Florida State football coaches are now pulling down. (OK, we admit that it is really CBS that is interested in the topic. We are just using the recent entries to lead into the topic).

CBSSportsline.com recently ran a very interesting article focusing on the role of booster funds as compensation for the FSU coaches. You can read the entire article by clicking here.

Money raised by Florida State’s booster organization will be used to nearly double the pay of one new assistant football coach and increase another’s by 50 percent, according to copies of contracts released Wednesday.

Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, whose base salary from the university is $215,000, will get $210,000 from the Athletic Development Fund raised by the Seminole Boosters.

The extra money is compensation for additional duties not required to draw his base pay, including fundraising, speeches, radio and television shows and public relations contacts with alumni, supporters and civic and community groups, official said.

Bowden hired Fisher, formerly offensive coordinator at LSU, to replace his son, Jeff Bowden. The younger Bowden, who drew fan and media criticism for Florida State’s poor offense the past few years, announced his resignation two days after the Seminoles lost at home 30-0 to Wake Forest.

Florida State’s boosters also are paying $537,000 to the younger Bowden as part of his resignation deal.

A lot has been made of Florida State’s new all-star coaching staff after the arrival of Jimbo Fisher and Chuck Amato. Make no mistake, SFN expects a large jump in the quality of Florida State football in the coming years.

Post-Script
We should have waited just a couple of more days and we would have had this article fom SI about how Bobby Bowden has re-tooled Florida State’s coaching staff and is excited about the 2007 season.

Contrary to what some diehards believe, the mere presence of Fisher and the other new coaches — Dawsey, former FSU running back Dexter Carter (running backs), highly regarded West Virginia offensive line coach Rick Trickett and longtime former Bowden assistant/NC State head coach Chuck Amato — will not in of itself send the ‘Noles vaulting back to the national championship game. Just from watching practice, it’s apparent FSU, which has been beset by injuries the past couple seasons, still lacks the quality depth it once possessed, particularly at receiver, offensive line and linebacker.

In addition, this fall’s schedule is so brutal — road trips to Florida, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Clemson, Colorado and defending ACC champ Wake Forest, plus home or neutral-site games against Miami and Alabama — that even a much-improved ‘Noles squad might not win significantly more games.

What’s also apparent, however, is that FSU’s long, six-year nightmare is over. With Fisher in charge, the ‘Noles’ offensive production will quickly start heading in the other direction.

I didn’t know they got Jimbo. Holy crap; hope he’s not there too long.

  2. StateFans 04/10/2007 at 10:16 AM #

I think that he is going to be there for a long time. He is the front runner to replace Bowden, which is why he made the move.

  3. PackMan97 04/10/2007 at 10:18 AM #

He’ll only be there long term if they get the wins.

  4. beowolf 04/10/2007 at 10:23 AM #

SFN, that makes sense. Jimbo’s destined for an HC job soon.

  5. Pack92 04/10/2007 at 10:28 AM #

^SFN, could not agree more about Jimbo being there for a LONG time. If they go back to the top 5 for the next 1-2 years he is a lock for the HC. As I posted in another thread, I think Jimbo will do extremely well with the offense but a real nastiness could be back on defense with Chuck and Mickey getting back together. Those 2 together had some of the meanest, fastest, most disruptive defenses in college football for many years.

and bowden is destined for a retirement home soon

I’m convinced Bobby will find some way to screw FSU from the grave by getting one of his offspring the job.

Kevin Steele was a big loss. I seriously doubt it will be any better than a wash on the defensive side.

They should be dramatically improved on offense. More so because I think Jeff Bowden was so bad, rather than thinking Fisher being the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Yep – Jimbo has walked into the perfect position. BB can only coach 2-3 more years max. If he turns around this offense quickly – and I think he will – his offenses are pretty simple, he’s already raised his profile by just switching jobs – something he couldn’t do at LSU.

I think Amato is a great hire there too. He’s back doing what he does best. Administering the day to day workings of a football programs, working w/ defensive linemen and LBs.

These hires should huge for FSU’s long term outlook. The only possible problem would be an early departure of Jimbo to another program. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an opening in Knoxville, Baton Rouge, ARK or even Gainesville soon.

As it is in life – timing is everything. The key for FSU will be for Bobby to step aside before any of those jobs will come open or for those guys to look elsewhere for their hire. Jimbo has a chance to prove himself as a Stoops type assistant who is ready for the big time. If he succeeds as OC, the only question will be whether he is a HC in Tally or elsewhere.

Bowden’s **** out of luck if he wants his sons to coach there. There’s a good reason why that nepotism clause existed in the first place.

FSU looks to be real good in the near future, but they may never be undefeatable like when they first joined the ACC. That mental hurdle for the rest of the conference is gone. You wonder if Duke basketball has reach that point as well after this year.

The N&O was booed out of the RBC. Instead of getting the message, they think it’s better to attack their customers.

Alpha is right in that the N&O has become less hostile to NC State. Still, even today, the N&O is biased because

    1) their primary color commentator, Caulton Tudor, is more interested in UNC than other schools

    2) their headlines, not the articles, tend to spin UNC in a positive light and NC State in a less favorable light

“Kevin Steele was a big loss. I seriously doubt it will be any better than a wash on the defensive side.”

A wash isn’t bad at FSU.

That million dollar staff at NCSU worked out real well. 🙂

Please excuse the off-topic question, but does anyone know what has happened to redandwhitefromstate.com? Their latest article is dated January 2007!

  14. choppack1 04/10/2007 at 11:39 AM #

Actually it did – but short term.

^ Red and White is not dead, though I may have been (try hitting a stationary object at 47.5 MPH) were it not for the grace of God. It’s taken me a lot longer than I would like to get the blog moving again. I totalled a car in February and have had two sinus and facial reconstruction surgeries in the meantime, and let me tell you that that kind of surgery sucks. To this day I am still getting crushing sinus headaches as everything heals but I refuse to take any more narcotics to alleviate the pain. Thankfully that’s becoming more rare.

I was actually writing a new article when I took a break to come over here and catch up on some stuff. We’ll be back, but you guys have been in excellent hands with SFN and Section Six, two places I considered the better of RAWFS before the wreck.

  17. beowolf 04/10/2007 at 11:59 AM #

Holy crap, Alpha, I’m very sorry to hear that. I didn’t know about it. Here’s hoping you heal quickly and fully.

As for Tudor, I have a much greater appreciation for him every since last year and some of his commentary this past year. Unlike nearly every other sports goon, with a few other notable exceptions, Tudor GOT IT about NC State basketball.

  18. DRW 04/10/2007 at 11:59 AM #

alpha: Sorry to hear about your wreck. Hope you get to feeling 100% soon.

As we have all seen for ourselves, it takes time to teach players a new offensive or defensive system. IMHO, FSU, NC State, and UNX will ALL have issues on the field because of this. (Let’s just hope OUR kids catch on quicker!!) 🙂

  20. WolfPup35 04/10/2007 at 12:04 PM #

BTW..Good health and quick healing to you!

  21. Pack92 04/10/2007 at 12:16 PM #

Hang in there alpha! Hope the healing goes well, quick, and does not require any more surgery!

  22. Trout 04/10/2007 at 12:19 PM #

Get well alpha, you are a true asset to the NC State community.

  23. choppack1 04/10/2007 at 12:50 PM #

Good luck to you RAWFS. Been missing your stuff – but it looks like you’ve got an excuse 🙂

  24. RAWFS 04/10/2007 at 12:51 PM #

Thanks a lot fellows, the good wishes mean a whole lot to me, they really do.

Question – What if Bobby retires in a year or so and Jimbo takes over as FSU HC?
