My best friend is a sportswriter in Florida. After Trestman was hired he told me one of his friends, a longtime sportswriter, was railing against the Trestman hire – how bad an offensive coach he was, how he was run out of Miami, etc.

I dismissed it at the time…

But … he’s a genius! He wears glasses! They said so right there on ESPN! Look at him! He looks smart!

Honestly, I think there’s a kind of “sports smart” that wows sportscasters with horribly complicated schemes and systems that looks really, really intricate and cool but just doesn’t win because it relies too much on the cleverness of the invention and not nearly enough on the instincts of the athletes.

That describes Marc Trestman, it certainly describes Herb Sendek, and I think it also describes that “award winning” offensive line coach of yore, Robbie Caldwell. All these guys were praised by sportscasters but never produced to match their laurels.

Robbie Caldwell? Didn’t he go and coach at UNX after he was let go for lack of loyalty?
