Sad Stats

Numerous times over the last few weeks SFN has highlighted some of the sad stats that underscore just how bad NC State’s offense has been since Marc Trestman arrived in Raleigh last year. (Link to Trestman x3) Most of these stats have been a consolidation of results of (almost) two years of performance and resemble the following. For example, NC State has

•failed to score more than 24 points in 18 consecutive games
•scored more than 24 points only once in Trestman’s 21 games (vs Eastern Kentucky)
•gained less than 350 yards total offense in 14 consecutive games
•not scored a touchdown against a Division One opponent in the first quarter of a single game of 2006

With all of those horrible ‘rolling’ statistics, imagine how painful it is to LOSE a game where your team comprises the following stats like State did on Saturday because of a failure to score points:

•Toney Baker rushed for 174 yards.
•Defense forced three turnovers
• State started multiple drives close to mid-field because of generating over 100 yards in returns
•Average field position for the game was the 35 yard line
•State committed only 2 penalities for 10 yards
•State won time of possession
•State gave up just one sack

^If we can’t win games with performances like the one on Saturday, then when can we expect to (start) winning some games?

For a little reflexion…after almost seven complete seasons, the following is Chuck Amato’s record vs ACC competition:

1-1 vs Boston College
2-5 vs Clemson
4-0 vs Duke
4-3 vs Florida State
2-5 vs Georgia Tech
2-5 vs Maryland
0-1 vs Miami
3-3 vs North Carolina
2-3 vs Virginia
1-1 vs Virginia Tech
4-3 vs Wake Forest

Summary Statistics:

* 25-30 overall ACC record.

* Winning record against 3 ACC programs – Florida State, Wake Forest and Duke.

* .500 record against 4 ACC programs.

* Losing record against 4 ACC programs.

* 11-6 vs the Big Four

* Amato’s teams have finished higher than 4th in the ACC only once and have finished last in its division or in the bottom 3 of the ACC in 2 of the last 3 seasons.

    “not scored a touchdown against a Division One opponent in a single game of 2006”
    In the first quarter?

    SFN: Yes…1 quarter. Will fix that. Thanks! Also, sent you an email tonight; hope that you got it

    I haven’t seen many games but what I have makes it hard for me to beleive that Trestmans’ guys like Burke or Beck can make much of a difference. The guy seems a bit to programmed into a method to allow any ebb and flow change his methods. Its almost as if he had too much time at the pro level and got used to players being professionals and not 19 and 20 years needing a bit more spontineity. I’m not all in on firing him since you can’t just keep offing you field coordinators unless your President Lincoln, and you CTC are no Abe Lincoln.

    What does LF see in those numbers that speaks of contract extention?

    League realignment makes CTC even less impressive.

    Record against teams we play every year:
    1-1 vs Boston College
    2-5 vs Clemson
    4-3 vs Florida State
    2-5 vs Maryland
    3-3 vs North Carolina
    4-3 vs Wake Forest
    ====
    16-20

    Record against teams we don’t play every year:
    4-0 vs Duke
    2-5 vs Georgia Tech
    0-1 vs Miami
    2-3 vs Virginia
    1-1 vs Virginia Tech
    ====
    9-10

    I was wondering if anyone knew of our redzone %.

    It’s pretty darn telling that our D and special teams have scored more TDs than our offense the last 3 games. When you count FG’s, our offense inches ahead of our d and special teams during the same span 23-21.

    I can also think of 3 key 4th down conversions that we didn’t fail to get.

    It just seems like there is an utter lack of creativity AND common sense on the sidelines, especially when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. Why not use Stone the way that UF is using Telbow? Why not put Stone in there and have him throw a pass?

    This year’s offense has been beyond pathetic given the talent on the field – but I really believe our problem lies in our red-zone conversion rate. Trestman is making State fans do something they probably never thought they’d do – long for Mazzone.

    could someone please enlighten me to the definition of “CTC”? i am at a loss, and i see it all the time. . . thanks to whomever would like to explain.

    CTC = Chuck the Chest

    The five plays from the 1-foot line in the Clemson game did me in. Trestman is Sendek in disguise! I’ve a feeling the UNC and ECU games are going to be fugly.

    BTW, anyone remember seven years ago when State was also looking at hiring Friedgen and UMD was considering Amato?

    “Oh cruel fate! Why do you mock me?” – Homer Simpson, obviously a State fan.

    Great job once again for compiling all the above stats! I think what your stats show is exactly what I said last week. At the end of the day this team, coaches included, will find a way to beat itself. It’s no longer penalties & turnovers, but just like all poorly coached teams when one problem is fixed three more pop up. Bad coaches always complain about perpetually “being behind the eight ball.” The reality is that once the obvious problems are fixed (ie…penalties & turnovers) the little problems are brought into the light.

    I will admit that this team is playing very hard, which is the only good sign for these coaches. I would like to quote a couple of famous coaches in regards to the close losses:

    Jim Valvano, as I heard him say in 1987, “Whether you win or lose by 1 or 100, it doesnt matter. A win is a win and a loss is a loss.”

    Billy Tubbs, former Oklahoma Basketball coach:
    “I always tell my players to get me to 5 minutes to go within 5 points. I tell them that if we lose by more than 5 it’s their fault, but if we lose by 5 or less it is my fault!”

    I think they speak for themselves!

    “BTW, anyone remember seven years ago when State was also looking at hiring Friedgen and UMD was considering Amato?”

    The UMd job became open 1 year after Amato was hired, so UMd wasn’t looking at him. However, I think we did look at Friedgen.

    ^”I was wondering if anyone knew of our redzone %.”

    Chop – For me this is the most telling stat of our season along with redzone defense %. We are:

    8th in the ACC in Redzone offense at 82.6% (Wake is 1st at 91.7%) and

    11th in the ACC in Redzone defense at 93.3% (Wake is 1st at 65.5%).

    These stats best explain why we are 3 – 7 and they are 9 – 1. We lead Wake in total offense and total defense. I’ve never seen any past Redzone % stats but I am willing to bet that Wake’s 65.5% Redzone defense is close to a historical accomplishment.

    I agree with several posters regarding the team’s still working hard and not quitting. And with that in mind, maybe the staff should be the ones running gassers at the end of practices this week considering how the staff has loafed on it’s responsibilities this season.

  13. choppack1 11/13/2006 at 12:25 PM #

    Thanks RickJ – and isn’t that where the rubber meets the road. I mean, all the stats are window dressing until you get to the red-zone. Truthfully, I’m shocked that our red-zone offense is so high. (I’d also refine that stat so that 100% is a TD, and a FG is 50%. So what you’d do is multiple the # of times you were in the red zone by 6, a TD gives 6 out of 6 points, a fg 3 out of 6 and of course, nothing = 0 points.) I think it’s rare that a trip inside the red zone and earning a FG should be considered = to a TD.

  14. richdail 11/13/2006 at 12:31 PM #

    If our redzone stat is that high, we must not be getting into the redzone very often. Which seems about right.

  15. Woof Wolf 11/13/2006 at 1:11 PM #

    I think we finished 4th in the ACC in 02 and in a three way tie for 4th in 01 & 03. Unless my stats are wrong we haven’t finished higher than 4th.

    More sad stats:

    In his last three years MOC was 19-16 overall and 11-13 in the ACC.

    In the last three years CTC is 15-18 overall and 8-15 in the ACC.

  16. pman27 11/13/2006 at 2:02 PM #

    FWIW, Steve Logan (former ECU coach) said on his radio show last week that in his experience it takes about 3 years under a new offensive coordinator for the offensive playes to “finally get” what the OC is trying to do. IIRC, it related to the offensive concepts and blocking schemes, perhaps in terms of the percentage of the playbook the team can actually use.

    Seems like Trestman is trying to add some things in each week, but I expect things are still scaled back quite a bit.

    By the way, I don’t believe the comment was even in the context of our offensive situation – he was describing his early years as ECU’s OC.

    Amato is clearly the worst coach in the ACC. No coach has gotten so little out of so much talent during their administration. He recruits with the best but once the players get here, they rarely improve except in strength and speed and the God given talent and development they make as they physically mature. They still make the same mistakes they make when they were freshmen and obviously they aren’t getting much coaching or guidance on this since they keep making the same errors throughout the same 3 or 4 years they were here. Some players he actually hurts and crushes their confidence and self-esteem. Maybe TA McClendon was a fumbler and a bit lazy in conditioning, but he was a man-child when he got here. I remember the way he played against Texas Tech with the broken hand and his first Clemson game. By time Amato was done with him his confidence was so shot he couldn’t hang on to the ball and didn’t seem to want to play anymore. He did this in a lessor way when he pulled Bobby Washington against Miami when he fumbled the kickoff, and Washington so wanted to prove himself to his old almost-school. But he hardly saw the field after that. Now Amato seems to be beating down Andre Brown. He’s running more cautiously now because he’s afraid to fumble and mess up so he’s not banging ahead for the yards because he knows Tony Baker will see most of the reps. Of course Baker fumbled a couple times last year and got the same treatment. Amato doesn’t develope players. He recruits them and they play to their abilities. He’s not a teacher.

    I’ve just realized, after the past three years, that person who actually is most responsible for coaching the Wolfpack to wins the first four years is working with a new program. He was the one who led the Pack and gave it inspiration both during the games and behind the scenes. And it wasn’t Amato. Wasn’t even Norm Chow or Doc Holiday… It was Philip Rivers. He both ran the team and in a way coached it. How many times did we hear “coach on the field?” We sure as hell don’t have one on the sidelines. If only Phil could have spent time with the D, we might have played in a BCS bowl or two.
