Thanks to the Red & White from State for this entry focused on UNC-CH wide receiver, Jesse Holley’s recent illogical comments about NC State’s football schedule.

Obsessing about State’s football schedule has become somewhat the norm for senior leaders of the Tarheel’s football program. Just last year, UNC’s quarterback Matt Baker decided to weigh in with thoughts on the Wolfpack’s football schedule. (Please tell us how State people are the ones “obsessed” with everything that Carolina does!)     Once again, all I have to say is that we need to break this unacceptable 2 game losing streak to those clowns before we can really speak to anything.

    Is there a site that provides final strength of schedule rankings? It would be nice to use to evaluate MOC’s years vs Amato’s based on what the average rank of the teams each faced and their records against those teams.

    As Mickey notes, the way to shut this jackass up and still the braying of his fellows is to beat the hell out of UNC. Until Amato does that, mark me down as institutionally dissatisfied and the program as heading in the wrong direction. It’s that simple.

    And before anyone sqawks about over-emphasizing one game, that’s not the whole issue. To make our aspirations anything more than a mockery, we need to beat the supposedly inferior programs in our own backyard – and Wake and the Holes are the two premier and obvious examples of such.

    it is funny that everyone mentions that all we need to do is beat carolins in football. this was the exact same logic i applied when evaluating Herb. I didnt care if we win just 2 bball games a year, as long as thos games are carolina and duke. The rest will fall into place obviously, but those are the only two games that matter. Herb and chuck can roll out with these soft schedules all they want, i really do not care! i only want to beat carolina and duke, and until we find coaches who can do so and do so consistantly i will be unhappy with the state of our athletics dept. And if Fowler does not get that, then i wonder how he ever got his job. To me, his interview should involve that one question. “how do you plan on beating the shit out of UNC and duke?” its that simple

    I don’t know about the word consistently, for football it’s a fairly acceptable term with regards to Duke and UNC. But in basketball I don’t think even Roy or K could sign on to any guarantees on those terms. It’s not possible to guarantee and that’s what makes it great. We all want to beat those two programs more often than not, and doing it is possible, but what we need to be is a consistent and definite factor in deciding the regular season championship. Year in, and year out, as once were. Not a decided push over for the current top programs, one who only shows up to play basketball on rare occasions for 30 minutes when the mood hits us just exactly right. That is precisely what we have been on every court we’ve set foot on anywhere for too many years already, and that is not what the NC State basketball program has ever been about.

    Fowler just doesn’t get it, he’s proud of the status quo, the excuses of Duke and Carolina are his best friends. He’s at the head of the line and carrying the banner for the many basketball apologists.

    Amato’s struggling, Lowe’s struggling, but Lee Fowler???

    I don’t care what you guys say we beat UNC two years ago in Chapel Hill. I saw the ref signal a touchdown.

    You’re right. Too bad the game was close enough for one horrendous call from one official to be the deciding factor. It was a very close game though, right or wrong and whether we’re just more victims of the hype too, some of us just don’t think it ever should have been.

    Not to get into the argument over the UNC game mentioned above (but I will anyway :-)), but I guess the fact that the officials DISCUSSED the call after another official (with the better angle) disputed the touchdown call is moot? Isn’t that what good officials do, make sure they make the correct call? I guess the fact that the replays show that TA’s knee was down before he crossed the line makes no difference either, right? I mean the official held up the touchdown signal, so it must have been a touchdown, right? And it doesn’t matter that TA had another chance to punch it in from the 1/2 yard line and fumbled, right?

    Back to the point of this thread… Holley made a stupid statement for sure. That kind of trash talk should be kept for the locker room and the huddle, but if he’s dumb enough to say it the reporters will eat it up. The unfortunate thing though is that he said (in a tactless way) what a lot of folks have been thinking for the last few years about State’s OOC schedule. He has a point to some degree, whether you like it or not.

    I didnt mean to say we have to beat them every time we step on the field/court but i did mean to point out that as a head coach of one of the major revenue sports at State, you #1 priority is to beat carolina and Duke. And if you take care of that, the rest will fall into place.
    as for the fade into bbal, we ALL understand.

    I was at that game, it was a great game..And when the ref raised his hands to signal touchdown, i jumped and yelled and pulled my back out. Then when they called it back i was absolutely furious, i saw him go over the line. I got cussed out all the way to the car, and boy was it a long drive home..

    doatesjr – The fact that you actully believe that there was no touchdown there makes me sick. I know tons of Carolina fans who agree that we got robbed. of course its like icing on a cake to them…. but that game was ours…. our only faults are 1)being behind in the first place 2)TA not getting in the 2nd time around.

    I dont care who you are. NC State. Chapel Hill. Michigan. USC. Texas…anyone. If you get beat by 54 points, you dont get any credit for scheduling the team that beat you. None. Zero. Nothing. All getting beat by 54 points does is prove that you were a really horrible team that day, and it doesnt take a good team to show you that.

    TA could have fumbled and lost the game. An irreversible mistake that didn’t happen. They could have lined up offsides, as usual, and lost the game that way. Another irreversible mistake that did not happen.

    When the official signals a touchdown in college football, an irreversible mistake that happened, it stands. There is no instant replay.

    Actually it is commonplace for officials to overrule one another on calls if one has a better angle. It certainly appeared to me that his knee was down before he crossed the line, and it appeared that way to at least one official. The point here is that it doesn’t matter what we think, as we are biased towards our respective teams. The only non-biased folks are the officials, and that’s why they make the calls. I’d be pissed also if it had happened to UNC, but second guessing 2-year old calls and saying ‘what if’ is not going get you anywhere. Some folks act like that call cost State a national championship, when in reality it was just one game against one team (and not a very good team at that).
