The Wolfpack vs The Pirates (who don’t do anything)

This afternoon at 12pm (RSN) the Pirates (who are afraid of everything, Buckets, Vandwagon, Wicker furniture) will be coming to Raleigh to battle the freshly tested Wolfpack of NC State. Last time out for both squads the Pack were able to secure a big resume building victory at Tennessee while the Pie-rats finished a track-meet with VMI and came away with a 103-94 victory. NC State is 19-1 against ECU, with the lone loss coming on Dec. 8, 2007 in the Pack’s only visit to Greenville, NC. I’m still wondering if that was all just a bad dream and one day I’ll wake up and Bobby (Ewing) will still be alive. The last time I saw the Pack live was that game in Greenville and now my next game will be this one in Raleigh. Here’s to a different ending.

ECU is another rebuilding team who lost 4 starters from last year’s squad, 6 players total, one of which transferred to Georgia Tech. On top of all the graduation ECU’s lone big man this year, 6-10 SO, Marshall Guilmette, is lost for the season due to a knee injury. Guilmette, through 5 games, was performing very well and provided a low post presence for the Pirates even if his numbers weren’t jaw dropping. Now Head Coach Jeff Lebo is down to a seven man rotation with his tallest player at 6-8.

The Pirates are an uptempo team with an efficient offense. They shoot the ball well, especially from Three Land, are good at getting to the line and hitting their FT’s. They are also pretty good at defending the 3, steals, and not sending their opponent to the line – which is a good thing since they are almost as bad as the Pack at defending FT’s.

I think it’s time to put in the Big Guy.

Things ECU is bad at: defensive rebounding, blocking shots, and 2FG defense…you just know Buckets was seeing put-backs in his dreams last night…all of which leads to a bad defensive efficiency. Most of their problems on defense likely stem from the complete lack of size under the basket.

Likely Starters:

#1 Akeem Richmond (6-0, 180, SR) Guard – Richmond hasn’t met a 3pt shot he hasn’t liked. Of the 147 FGA’s this season, only 16 have been inside the arc (49-131 3FG). He also get’s to the FT line and knocks them down (.867). Since he’s taking 26% of ECU’s shot and those are basically 3’s every time, and still he’s sporting an ORating of 124, then there’s really no point in falling for any fakes towards the basket. There also, is without a doubt, no need to go under a ball screen fellas.
#22 Paris Campbell (6-3, 185, JR) Guard – Campbell is the lone returning starter from last year’s 23 win team. Even though Campbell has increased his possessions by 7.5% and taking nearly 9% more of ECU’s shots, this not only hasn’t slowed him down but he’s increased his ORating by 18.5 (122.7). There isn’t much Paris hasn’t done well this year and while Richmond is a (good) one trick pony around the arc, Campbell is who we should be more worried about.
#2 Caleb White (6-6, 190, FR) Guard – White is playing great as a freshman, ORating of 126.4, 66% eFG, while only taking up 17% of the team’s possessions. He’s playing his role and doing it well, though he does seem to get into foul trouble each game.

I’ll be honest, I have no idea which of these remaining four guys will get the start since Lebo constantly shifts them so I’m just going to group them all together.

#4 Prince Williams (6-5, 200, SO) Guard, #34 Michael Zangari (6-9, 230, SO) Forward, #25 Brandon Stith (6-7, 215, FR) Forward, #11 Antonio Robinson (6-4, 175, JR)

Of the group Stith is playing the best, he’s rebounding (especially offensive), he’s blocking, he’s shooting well, he’s just not hitting his FT’s very well. Zangari playing almost as well as Stith, just not blocking the ball like him or rebounding as well. Both the player formerly known as Prince and Robinson are great at dishing the ball, the problem is they have a tendency to dish it to both teams equally. One note about Williams is he’s taken 71 FTAs (.775) and 71 2FGAs (.493).

Richmond, Campbell, White, Stith, and Robinson all have a positive Roland Rating, while Williams and Zangari each have a negative RR.

Will NC State be able to take advantage of a clear low post height advantage or will early foul trouble plague the Pack and negate our strength in the paint? Will the Pack get caught in the classic trap game after it’s win in Knoxville and the high profile home game against Missouri next week, against an opponent who considers this their Final Four? Or will the Pack continue to make strides in improvement and not only focus on their current opponent and win but not get distracted if they get a big lead and let it slip away just to keep us watching?

KenPom likes the Pack by 11.

Loved the game tonight and how little the number of fouls called. It was actual basketball. I know it won’t stay like this and we will play more physical teams, but it was still a treat tonight.

Just because the foul thing intrigued me after listening to the end of the U*NC game, I wanted to see how many free throws there were taking a game, because it seems like a ton.

Through 10 games for us and them, we have shot 203 foul shots and they have shot 317!! That’s 10 more attempts a game. That’s a ton. So, just to make sure they lies I always here that they slash to the boards more than most teams, and that’s why they get so many more foul shots, I wanted to see how many of their points came from 2-pointers versus us. They make 24.7 2-pointers/game and we make 24.5/game. That’s basically no difference. So, they “earn” the extra free throws because…

I have enjoyed watching our brand of basketball, but I also am aware of the slow down sludge basketball that is coming once the Swoff (excuse me, ACC) schedule starts. For more information, if you’re bored, you can look at

    Mr. Stick….

maybe I’ve been too hard on you…

    Now this “sucks”….

A fifteen-year old boy walked into a pharmacy. “How much is it for one condom?”, he asked the pharmacist.

“Sorry, son, but they only come in packs of three and they’re $3.50,” said the pharmacist.

“Darn,” said the disappointed boy, “I don’t have enough money. And today I was planning on getting lucky with my new girlfriend.”

“Well,” said the pharmacist, “in that case you can take a box for free.”

“Gee, thanks!!!” yelled the boy as he dashed out the door holding the box of condoms.

That night, he was at his girlfriends’ house, and everyone was seated at the dinner table, ready to eat. They all said grace with bowed heads, and then they began eating.

As dinner progressed, the girl noticed that the boy’s head was still bowed. “I didn’t know you were so religious,” she whispered to her young boyfriend, impressed.

“I didn’t know your dad was a pharmacist,” was his reply.

View from the second level. The PRIME sections, where the fans are TOO BUSY to use their tickets had MORE purple than red. It’s Christmas time….so I guess they had to come up with some gifts for the nice customers and gave their ECU folks tickets.

The noise level, for at least part of the game was pretty equal. I was checking Statsheet on the refs and heard a cheer….looked up and DW said ECU hit a TREY. I said….but I heard CROWD…and she said…the ECU CROWD is louder. Someone in white threw up a floater and the AIR BALL CHANT was really LOUD….

Many folks in our section were helping coach (me included). When some of the lads SHOULD have been milking the clock, they were throwing up what looked like Whitt’s famous 1983 “pass”….but when you start to yell, “you DA….why did ……GREAT SHOT”. It was THAT kind of game.

Vandy looked like his old self in the first few minutes….the old self that played last year. Gott needed to reassure him that he was loved and that required him to be CLOSE….and he stayed CLOSE for quite some time.

The BEAST (BeeJay) as he is called or the Hulk was impressive. Still a bit slow…but impressive.

What was NOT impressive is that he and Vandy do not have the “knack” or intuition for WHERE the ball is going to come off. Their timing and position on rebounds (both ends) was horrible. BUT, they do really traumatize a guy trying to make a shot or driving.

Lewis….looked a bit tentative, but got into the flow of the game. Cat needed a rest and we also need to change the tempo….THEN the ECU D has to figure out WHO to guard that will be a scoring threat….I THINK he was in with Turner for a while.

Lewis is NOW Vandy’s NEW BEST FRIEND. Mutt and Jeff have their act down…..that was the best team or duo effort that we have seen since Lowe and Whitt. Lewis knows Vandy’s moves and speed. The other guys who tried to feed him threw it away or it bounced bad. Vandy would NOT have had is game high if Cat had been in there. Lewis was crucial to our keeping the lead as they made their last run…May be weak other places…but he and Vandy quickly took the wind out of the Pirate Ship sails and they limped along and our big cannons then broadsided them (was that enough visual?).

Cat lived up to his nickname. He is really QUICK and has more moves than Allied Van Lines. BUT, he is sort of a Whittenberg type of point guard. He is SO used to scoring and carrying the team…(He really reminded me of Calvin…or perhaps the CJ of years past). Don’t get me wrong He does run the floor…but he seems a bit more intent of assisting HIMSELF than others. The reason that he has such few TO’s that when he lost the ball, he was quick enough to get it back. Have you heard that DUMB commercial where the QB throws and catches his OWN passes? If so, then Cat is about as close to that as you will find in the REAL world. I would NOT start Tyler….but if Cat gets a CJ mindset when we are behind….he will be MORE of a problem, then a solution….He is FUN to watch, but he needs to let the game come to him and give some of the game to his teammates….OR that is what it looked from our perch and others made the same comments.

Finally, we get the score sheets with the Ref’s names in the Lenovo CC. I checked the SS numbers. They are all averaging in the LOW 40’s (probably close to 43 FPG).

Today….they called 25…yes 25. The tempo and flow was not interrupted. Did they miss some? YEP. Did they make more than ONE Make UP (Honey, I’m so SORRY) call? YEP and they seemed to go for US.

This is the WAY it should be called. The Zebs were there. They got razzed a little…crowd noise was equal so that is GOOD.

We were awesome….but we need LOW FOUL GAMES….

I really wondered about 10 minutes to go if John Swofford would hit their pagers and tell them to WHISTLE like they were walking through a graveyard on Halloween night…

The lack of whistles really improved the flow and there was no blood or body parts on the hardwood.

GO PACK…really felt good….but when we get the Ref’s that need to keep their averages HIGH, it is going to be a DIFFERENT story….or at least I fear it….

“Cat is the best defending guard we have had in at least 25 years. Easily.”

Ishua Benjamin, Cliff Crawford and Anthony Grundy are asking you to think again. Love Cat. Amazing player. Freakish speed and the lateral quickness to truly be a game changer on defense. Love his effort, but let’s not crown him just yet.

I am most impressed with how the freshmen are the vocal leaders on the floor. They are making their stupid mistakes. But they are working hard, communicating and not scared to compete. Seems like many of the intangibles are there. I like seeing us getting better. I like our size and rotation. Seems like each player is getting comfortable in their role. Can’t wait to see VJ and BA on the court together when some old Big East team tries to get physical with us.

Lots of questions still need to be answered in conference play. We will take some beatings. But Got will get them peaking in March.

Who knows, but I love watching these guys.

I’m so impressed by the growth of this team from the beginning of this season. Vandy gets better every game. Freeman gets better every game. Washington gets better every game. Barber gets better every game. Anya is actually playing now, and contributing! It’s so much fun to watch this team grow and evolve. There are still problems, but man, there’s so much potential there.

Cat is a difference maker at both ends already. His defense has been tremendous, and we’re seeing him grow from the reaching he was doing early to sliding his feet more and playing position defense. Also underrated: he’s AWESOME at closing out on shooters.

I’ve said from the beginning, Anya is going to be the most significant defensive player we’ve had in years. He needs to get slimmer and quicker so that he can corral the P&R better, but his timing and those long arms make him an absolute menace.

Freeman and Washington are both really high IQ players. They make dumb freshman mistakes at times, but you can see that they understand positioning and spacing and where to look with the ball. I’m super excited about their futures.

I’m most worried about the Lee/Turner tandem on the wing (something I didn’t think I’d be saying before the season). They’re both super streaky, and they both make some really poor decisions (at both ends). Turner in particular has some really terrible shot selection. If we’re going to be a great offensive team, that has to tighten up.

What more is there to say about Buckets? He’s easily our best player since Hodge. I think my favorite thing right now is watching him when he gets out on a semi-break against 1 or 2 defenders. Watching him do that little euro-step and get effortlessly to the rim is just beautiful. He makes really tricky finishes look easy.

x, agreed on all points. Turner better keep draining 3’s because he’s costing us points any time he does anything else. He seems to get used defensively frequently, and his decision-making isn’t the greatest. Lee has had his moments, but he’s not the highest percentage shooter around and I don’t usually have a warm, fuzzy feeling when I see him shoot a 3 ball.

I imagine Trevor Lacey in that spot and think, hmmmm, how would that look? Pretty nice, I bet.

FP – during one of my multiple bouts of insomnia last night, I did think of Grundy. It’s fair to say he was at least Cat’s equal defensively.

I do think Cat is better than Crawford already (on D). And by the time Osh became a defensive stopper, he was no longer a PG and was playing SF almost exclusively. So I will take that one on a technicality!

I agree, the freshman leadership is pretty incredible. The last really wide-ass open three of the second half (other than fluke tipped ball plays), you could see Cat stamp his foot and explode. After that, we tightened up significantly. Cat doesn’t seem super talkative, but he picks his moments and when he does…his teammates listen. That’s the hallmark of a leader.

Totally agree on Washington and Le Nard’s BBIQ. It’s exceptional for any big man, and for freshman bigs…off the freaking charts.

I am disappointed that Anya’s twitter handle isn’t @KingHippoNCSU. People need to realize just what a badass animal the hippo is (most lethal predator in all of Africa). Like Anya, the size of a Mack truck, the speed and handling of an Audi A6. Own that shit, KH!!!

Adventuroo, the noise level must have been different in different sections. I was in the lower level just off center court, and it seemed liked there were 90% Wolfpack fans, and got pretty loud, especially in the end of 1st half run. I didn’t notice or hear much from the Pirate fans.

I do know Beejay saved our asses this game. The team was going nowhere and sinking fast until Anya came in. He gave a real energy lift, and refused to let ECU get a shot at the basket. I don’t think we win this game without him.

During a visit to NYC, Coach Gottfried told us that Vandenburg had improved. It was the only comment in which the crowd chuckled. No mas.

Vandy was underutilized the past few years, in part b/c there were better offensively skilled forwards on the team. Also Vandy fouled too much (or at least was whistled for fouling b/c of tendencies), but part of post defense (blocking) is timing/rhythm and moving your feet, which are skills hard to develop from the bench. Must of us know Gott prefers short term gains (playing your best men) to getting minutes to develop other players.

Glad to see Gott play 9 guys, though he needs to start full court pressure at times. We have the athletes and depth to do it successfully.

I’d say Vandy was properly utilized before this year. He never earned his PT before this season. Even when he got into games, he was a minus in almost every facet. He fouled too much because he was out of shape and slow. He had no confidence in the post. I always thought he had potential going back to his freshman season, but he seemed to get worse and worse every year. This year, he put in the work, got in shape and is looking confident out there. He’s a completely different player than he’s been the last couple years.

While I support the Pack and am glad the men continue to improve, and be successful, where are the kudos to the women? Went to the LSU game in Reynolds friday. Great game with only around 2000 in attendance, and knocked off the number 12 ranked team in the country. Our women have a great team and deserved more support and coverage. I enjoyed the experience. Hope some of you give them the chance to allow you the chance to experience some great women’s basketball. I plan on doing it again.

There is a lot to be proud of when watching this team perform. I am truly excited for the rest of the season!

That said, I don’t want to get to far ahead with expectations. We have played well since Berg has returned and Cat has taken over the point. We are due some losses though. Please note: we are due some losses, fact. We are young and inexperienced and will lose games this year. I am trying to prepare myself to handle the fall when we do lose. We need to play better defense, period. The shot blocking ability by Berg and Anya bails us out in many cases. This team is great to watch and with any luck will make the tourney. Outside of that there is nothing else we can ask for. Oh yeah, sweep Carolina. One can dream…

Yes, the team will lose some games, and maybe even a couple of them may be of the “WTF” variety. In their next game, they are going to face a tall order, in fact. But you have to give them credit for their tenacity, unity and ability to hold it together when things get tight. These guys are playing beyond their experience.

As for playing defense better, well, compared to the 2012-13 edition, their team defense is a lot better than what we endured from the guys who were more worried about their NBA resumes and in-fighting with each other.

A couple notes from the stats department:

For a team that is so young, our ability to protect the ball is amazing. We’re 29th in the country in TO%. That’s outstanding.

Just a little bit of that NC State luck: opposing teams have shot 79.7% from the free throw line against the pack this year. How unlucky is that, you ask? It’s the highest percentage for any team in the country. That’s right, no other team in the country has seen their opponents shoot better from the free throw line than the Pack. (the national average is 69%)

We get 65.4% of our points off of two-point FGs. That’s the highest percentage in the country. Thanks Buckets.

    And speaking of…

Buckets: 30% Usage rate, 121.5 Offensive Rating
    2 time All-American Doug McDermott: 31.9 Usg, 121.6 ORtg

Truly, this has been the most exciting team to watch in a long, long time. Sure, there are growing pains, but all the players seem to be buying in. And I cannot stress how important it is to have the bench depth we currently have. When a player’s head isn’t in it, Gottfried can bench him and get him focused. Depth at all positions. Man. I love it.
