November Looms (Corrected)

Someone hacked my account last week. Those who know me well know I’m just not the reasonable, positive type, like the misguided fool who wrote under my byline tried to be.

I understand the point he was trying to make (as idiotic as it indeed was). Essentially, due to the inherent, imbalanced power structure, managing expectations in college football is far different than “accepting our place” in college basketball. There just aren’t many 10-win coaches out there, so they have to be created over time. Oregon and Virginia Tech are the only two programs in the past 20 years that gained and then maintained their status as part of college football’s elite. The Virginia Tech model is certainly one we can follow (we have the resources), and while TOB will arguably leave State a program better off than he inherited, it’s time for us to replace him with someone who can advance it to the next level, because he clearly isn’t capable.

My first call: James Franklin. He’s young (40) and energetic, has NFL experience; he’s widely appreciated as a solid recruiter (Top 25 in 2012), and is winning at Vanderbilt (by Vanderbilt standards). He was Yow’s chosen coach-in-waiting at Maryland before she left (he was not her replacement Kevin Anderson’s, however), so there’s clearly an opportunity…but — big but — Franklin currently makes around $3 million per year (estimated) in Nashville, so someone’s pockets deeper than mine will have to open up to make that kind of commitment.

No sleep ’til Atlanta.

Is there an up and coming young head coach that has some recruiting ties to the Carolinas and Southeast? I would think that would soften the drop-off somewhat if we could get a coach with an established recruiting base here in ACC country.

As much as I think TOB deserves to go, for all he has done rebuilding the program to the point where a 7-5 season is a huge disappointment , he deserves a classy sendoff, and maybe a TOB day in a couple of years.

I don’t want to just throw him under the bus unless he is obstinate about staying.

Agree, but he has to go.

To quote Clint Eastwood: “he had his chance…if they’re not getting the job done, you just gotta let me go”

Throw him under the bus? Give me millions to retire and I’ll jump under a bus myself. I wouldn’t worry about him one bit. Do you ever hear that he enjoys what he’s doing for a living? I think he will snicker all the way out the door and to the bank.

It is silly to question a person’s motivation or dedication when you don’t know him. TOB has not done or said anything that would indicate he is not committed to, or doesn’t like, what he has been doing for 30+ years. At the FBS level, the money certainly is lucrative. And it drives many coaches to do questionable things. But that is not typically why coaches enter the profession, or stay in it.

It is equally silly – and quite pointless – to have this discussion about TOB until after the season is over. We have at least 3 more games to go and I’m sure at least the players would appreciate fan support as long as they’re still out there trying.

They quit, we quit. That goes for both coaches and players. The empty seats will say it all Saturday. It will not go unnoticed by DY. TOB has lost this team and a majority of the fans.

    ^^^^Well said Wulfpack!

My tenure as a Pack fan exceeds that of TOB and the players many times over, so I will be there cheering on the Pack on Saturday. Note the difference. I’m cheering on the Pack, not necessarily the coach or any specific players. They did give up against UVA. I was there. I saw it. I felt it. I hang that on the coach. The coach has to inspire the team and make sure they get up for EVERY game. That didn’t happen. We’ll see what we’ve got in a few days.

Love him or hate him one thing TOB is not is a motivator. Plenty of evidence of that over many years now. We have been passionate and motivated maybe a handful of games in TOB’s tenure. I am not saying he can’t motivate but rather saying it appears to be a very rare occurrence in his tenure.

I will also support the Pack no matter what but I do want a coaching change. Yes, we do have a right to bitch at the coaching staff (nothing against the players here) when our $$$$$ is what supports the program.

Supporting the program means wanting what it best for it, and it sure ain’t TOB. Enough is enough, even if we throw him under the bus. He has had ample to make changes and correct our problems, but they still happen. A new coach is needed, now! Even lost my desire to go watch them. I mean we beat FSU, and unlike we hear so often, we have talent. How often is FSU shut out for a whole half. That is talent. But the team and that talent seems to have quit playing since then, we should be 0-3 after that game, except for the missed FG @ Maryland. Face the facts our coaches really do suck!

    ^ Yep!

As we engineers age, we often start to understand communications a little better and study the phrases that are required to get the non-technical to truly grasp our proposals. Thus, I will employ one of Shakespeare’s famous phrases. The most famous one was used by the Eagles…..”Old Billy was right….Kill all the Lawyers…”. But equal to that is the phrase “Sea Change” taken from Ariel’s song in the Tempest. For those of you that have children and grandchildren….did you REALLY know where Ariel came from.

Sea Change is what is needed and will eventually come to fruition in our FB program.

I have read all the posts here and also in the OTHER outlets. There WAS a Sea Change on Saturday. The longtime and loyal fans finally gave up. They started to realize the futility of the situation. The coaches do NOT appear to have a unified charter. The team is NOT coheisve. The MD loss was the defining moment.

SO, UNLESS the FSU team shows up against WF (and the potentially THREE other opponents), the season is over.

And THAT, my fellow Wolfies, is the end of the TOB era.

We need to lift up our glasses in a Toast to him because he did accomplish what was required. But we also need to disavow our continued loyalty to him because he can NOT lead us out of the desert. We will wander for decades if we depend on him.

Sort of like the election. Romeny appears to have the momentum and I think, based on what I read, what I hear and what I can “figure out”…so there will probably be a change. The REASON for the change…LACK OF ACCOMPLISHMENT or a TRACK RECORD.

That about sums it up for Coach TOB. He has made SOME changes, but not major ones.

SO, comment as ye may….only time will tell.

Now, will we have a NEW coach before we have a “certified” president….that may be the most interesting question of the night…

Every fan that has LTRs and/or purchases a ticket or buys clothes, etc… is like a stock holder of the program. They (we) do deserve strong performances and results (via wins). TOB is NOT getting it done. The employers (us) are calling for a change in our employees (TOB & crew); and rightly so. I for one can’t wait to see who DY has in store for us. Go Pack!

Whew, thought I was just being silly.

TOB needs to be gone before the end of the week.

And, Glennon needs to go with him.
