Sordid history of ACC letting UNC off the hook on unsportsmanlike behavior — UPDATED with news of suspension

So, the ACC is reviewing the controversial play discussed here and embedded below?

Where have we heard that before?

I hope you will forgive us at SFN if our experiences on this topic leaves us more than just a little cynical. Please wake us if the real story here ever develops by conference brass in Greensboro that ultimately takes ANY action against John Swofford’s precious boys in baby blue.

In a game full of twists and turns, a pre-snap collision in the first quarter may have been the most eyebrow-raising of all. At the very least, it has caught the attention of the ACC league office.

Take a look at the above video, which, for the record, was titled by the individual that posted it, not me. What it shows is UNC LB Shakeel Rashad, a true freshman, running into Duke WR Conner Vernon from behind. Vernon went down to the ground, rolled around and the trainers came out. He went off the field and was back on the next snap.

Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said he was told by an official that Rashad had been running backwards and bumped into Vernon. Now, that’s clearly not true, and Cutcliffe saw as much when he reviewed the game tape Sunday morning.

“It’s different than what was described to me during the game,” Cutcliffe said of the run-in. “It was full speed, and there was no intent to avoid. We were going to turn it in but we understand now that the conference office is looking at it, and I’ll be interested to see what they say.

“People have seen it, you’ve seen it on television, I’ve just never seen anything quite like it. I was amazed when I saw that this morning. I don’t know, I’m kind of speechless about it. I’ve never had that happen in my entire career. Very unusual.”

For what it’s worth, the TV announcers were pretty emphatic that it was intentional.

“It’s clearly intentional,” the commentator said. “There’s no chance that he doesn’t see Conner Vernon. I’m surprised that wasn’t flagged. Look, if Shakeel Rashad can’t see, we’ve got to get his peripheral vision checked. There’s no chance that you can play linebacker in the ACC if you can’t see a guy just standing there.”

The ACC could potentially fine or suspend Rashad after viewing the film.

Am I supposed to be surprised that the ACC’s on-field officials not only ‘missed’ what happened on Saturday night, but missed it so badly that they literally FABRICATED a version of the story that had absolutely zero basis in reality to explain it? What a SHOCKER! — the version of the story the officials concocted out of thin air just happened to fall in the favor of UNC-Chapel Hill!?

I wonder if the ACC officials in the game told Coach Cutcliffe to ‘shut his f***ing a** up’ like ACC Basketball official Brian Dorsey reportedly yelled at NC State Coach Mark Gottfried the last time Gottfried dared battle UNC? Maybe we’ll leave that one for another day?

It isn’t like you haven’t seen the same style of unsportsmanlike behavior in the past as you saw from Shakeel Rashad on Saturday night, so don’t be too surprised if you see the same type of non-response from the ACC Office as we’ve seen at every stop along the way. And, don’t be surprised when you see this behavior again in the future as there is NO REASON to expect changes while the ACC continues its long standing practice of turning a blind eye — particularly when it involves the boys in baby blue.

But, please don’t hold poor Shakeel Rashad responsible. Rashad is nothing more than a kid who was attracted to a program that has given us such a long string of poor UN-PUNISHIED behavior on the the field that one could make the case that he was only emulating what UNC-CHeats and the ACC has implicitly endorsed through the years. (Of course, the other reason why you don’t want to call out Shakeel Rashad is because David Glenn or Butch Davis’ lawyer may call you racist.)

Rashad was attracted to a renegade culture at a football factory that has found a way to create dozens of physical altercations in recent years without ever receiving any notable punishment from the Atlantic Coast Conference. For example, while being recruited by UNC-CH Rashad got to watch Quinton Coples intentionally tackle a defenseless Russell Wilson some 5 to 10 yards out of bounds only four plays before UNC linebacker, Kevin Reddick, punched NC State’s Jarvis Williams in the head. He also got to hear UNC players admit the unsportsmanlike conduct was pre-mediated as retaliation for unconfirmed reports of ‘spitting’. The punishment for these crimes? You guessed it. Nothing. Please click here for a memory refresher.

While on that previously linked entry you will also see reference to everyone’s favorite, Dontae Paige-Moss. Paige-Moss was able to best Reddick by actually throwing TWO punches in college football games without ever missing a game. Thanks, ACC! You can see a couple of DPM’s all-time best below – first vs Miami and second vs NC State.

Lastly, please click here and scroll down into the post-script for another classic display of Carolina Class that served to help recruit Rashad. In this video, UNC’s Charles Brown has to try really hard to look stupid and almost start another huge incident in a State-Carolina football game. I’m just tired of including them all in this entry. One would thing the ACC would be tired of it as well.

Get ready for this to be commonplace under Fedora. If you want an example go back and look at his last game coaching before coming to UNX. His players spent much of the game trash talking and taking cheap shots at the other team. Now the pattern continues at Carolina…can anyone really be that shocked?

Finally a speck of justice and the cheating bastards are held accountable. Of course Fedora has been duly indoctrinated into the system of cheating and corruption. How many of the current players are beneficiaries of the illegal academic perks provided to UNC athletes. It is a top down administration approved and implemented culture of corruption and cheating, not isolated cases.

Early 90’s (93?) UNC Players on the bench swung their helmets like clubs at one of our players after a questionable late hit.

This could go on for pages.

Great, I’d rather have all UNC def players On the field this Saturday. They played a great game of dodgeball against the run.

Thanks goes to SFN for drawing attention to this incident. Thankfully articles like this and Duke being suddenly emboldened has helped right a wrong.

  7. state73 10/22/2012 at 6:17 PM #

This is typical of Fedora’s teams over the last few years. They are known for their cheap shots. He is a good choice to inherit Butch’s thugs.

  8. highstick 10/22/2012 at 6:33 PM #

I’ll be perfectly honest…I don’t recall any cheap shots when So. Miss played the Gamecocks a year or so ago. They just got their butts kicked which is the solution to any BS from the Holes.

Swoffy must be walking a tightrope. While I believe the hit WAS intentional, it just didn’t appear to be as hard enough to cause the flop…Now Dookies are infamous for flopping, but whether it’s moved to the football team or not is subject to debate.

In any event, watch us get screwed by the refs this week…Remember, we are not their rival..

It was ’93 in C-F. This was the game that ended our five game win streak over them, and started their seven game (ugh) streak over us. If I recall correctly, one of their assistants body slammed one of our assistants during that melee.

  10. Wufpacker 10/22/2012 at 7:06 PM #

^ I was there too, and you do remember it correctly. Several of their assistants were getting in on the “giving of business” actually, but it was the body slam, in addition to the swinging of helmets, that was the most attention getting.

I always did wonder about the smarts of someone who would take off their helmet during a brawl anyway….seems the best time to keep that sucker on. Aggressive and not too bright….bad combination.

Looks like Fedora has not completely cleaned up the mess at UNC. The thug mentality is still alive and strong. This is a freshman and he probably was taking his cues from the upperclassmen and staff. I am shocked how the UNC coach and AD say it was clearly not intentional when any fool can see him lower is shoulder and push off at the end. Also his head did not turn side to side. He saw the Duke player and ran him over. Should have been 15 yd pf and ejection. Thugs will be thugs.

  12. hellfishtat 10/22/2012 at 7:27 PM #

Call me a cynic (hey, I have been a NCSU fan for 35 yrs), but when the coach says…

“I promise (you), there was none of, ‘Hey, let me run into this guy and that will stop the play before it gets started,'” Fedora said. “There was no malice at all.”

    That’s EXACTLY what it was.

In other news, Karl Hess has been called in to replace one of the suspended officials for the State/Carolina game this weekend…

  14. Wufpacker 10/22/2012 at 7:47 PM #

it was the other part of the Fedora quote that caught my attention.

He didn’t mean any physical harm. No wait, he actually didn’t mean to even run into him….yeah, that’s what I meant to say.

The more things change over there, the more they stay the same.

  15. redwolf87 10/22/2012 at 8:20 PM #

It was about this time last year that some were calling for this dogsqueeze Fedora to replace O’Brien.

Hope some of that has changed now.

I’m not an O’Brien apologist by any means, but I’ve been hearing complaints from workplace acquaintances etc. across the ACC spectrum about Fedora’s tactics this year, and I’m damned glad we don’t have him as coach. He is absolute Red Bull slime.

We’d better watch out this week and be ready to retaliate when it happens.

  16. MISTA WOLF 10/22/2012 at 8:57 PM #

I hope we beat the shoes off them turds this weekend. I’d like to put Larry Fedora in a corner and Ric Flair slap the Shiit out of him.

  17. wilmwolf80 10/22/2012 at 9:01 PM #

Mark my words, there will be some sort of incident in our game this weekend. Our guys will need to be tough and vigilant to avoid getting caught responding to some of the Holes taunting and bullshit.

  18. tjfoose1 10/22/2012 at 9:17 PM #

This was against Duke and Coach Cut., not NC State or Miami. Swofty had no choice.

  19. ryebread 10/22/2012 at 9:39 PM #

foose: That’s kind of how I see it as well. If NC State, Clemson, FSU, GT or Miami were on the receiving end of that, nothing would have happened.

  20. Alpha Wolf 10/22/2012 at 9:56 PM #

Apparently, John Clougherty didn’t do the analysis on the video. He wouldn’t have seen a thing.

  21. john of sparta 10/22/2012 at 10:03 PM #

    unintentional.
    that’s my take.
    i see 19-yo do
    stuff.

  22. Spike 10/22/2012 at 10:58 PM #

Not sure if it was intentional or not. He lowers his shoulder (or looks that way) to either try to slide by him and miss him or to level him. Not sure which but my guess is it wasn’t the first option. Second, after he runs into him he hesitates before he turns around. Probably because he either didn’t know it was bad or because he knew full well what he did. If you ran into someone that hard it’s normal to turn around either because you’re pissed or trying to figure out what just happened. The worst part to me and I’m surprised no one had mentioned it yet, was the fact that when he was rolling around in pain he makes no effort to go check on him or apologize. If it wasn’t intentional and he’s such an upstanding model human being wouldn’t he at least have tried to go check on him and see if he was ok??

  23. JSRy2k 10/22/2012 at 11:00 PM #

How many $$ fine would this draw in the NFL?

“‘I promise (you), there was none of, ‘Hey, let me run into this guy and that will stop the play before it gets started,’ Fedora said.” That’s fishy coach, because the thought of interrupting the play never entered my mind. I just figured it was a cheap shot on the ACC’s all-time leading receiver.

  24. Virginia Wolf 10/23/2012 at 9:51 AM #

It’s a shame that the ACC had to do this. It should have come from the Head Coach. Fedora is falling right into the ol’ “Carowhina Way!”

  25. WolftownVA81 10/23/2012 at 2:04 PM #

He lowers his shoulder – nuff said.
