WRAL: Thorp to step down at the end of the school year

According to WRAL, Thorp is on the way out.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Holden Thorp will step down as chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at the end of the 2012-13 school year, sources told WRAL News Monday.

The move is expected to be announced Monday.

UNC’s flagship campus has been beset by scandal for the past two years, including an NCAA investigation of the Tar Heel football program and internal probes of possible academic fraud in one department and questionable travel expenses by the school’s top fundraiser.

The N & O now has a story up with this interesting quote:

Wade Hargrove, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said the board tried to talk Thorp out of stepping down.

“Holden Thorp has done an exemplary job as chancellor, especially in improving a wide range of processes and academic and fiscal management procedures,” Hargrove said in a news release. “It is inspirational to see the passion that Holden has for the University and the positive impact a research university can have on society.”

Stay tuned.

Roy, when you look at this picture, do you ask yourself what is the difference between you and the other guys? We think you already know.

Rodney Purvis has been cleared by the NCAA! Thorpe is being allowed to stay on to take the hits that are coming. That way after the smoke clears they will replace him with someone that will have a clean start. Releasing Butch’s phone records would make this a perfect Monday..

I nominate Tami Hansbrough as the new chancellor. I hear she’s looking for work.

“But, honestly, my impression of him is that he is not a forceful leader or manager. Based on his personality, I just can’t see him going into a meeting, and slamming his fist on the table, and cleaning house of any corruption.”

    He’s just a puppet.

^ Exactly. I feel sorry for the guy. He got used. He’s no different than all these naive 18-20 year olds who are used up and thrown out. Once their utility is exhausted, the machine spits them out. The question becomes who is hiding behind the curtain? Who is the Wizard?

I hear Tami & Matt were at the Louisville Game on Carolina’s Benjamin’s looking for Thorpe’s replacement! They were also speaking with Pitino about sex scandal lawyers. LOL

Bear in mind: unlike previous departures, Thorp will still be a UNC employee. That has to carry some ramifications once the awkward questions start coming round again, as they inevitably will.

GAWolf, you lost me. You mentioned something about an “honest man” over there. I haven’t read about any of them over the last two years, except for all the ones who keep resigning and become deaf mutes immediately thereafter (when they are THEN spoken of in glowing terms). Is it when they get a golden parachute and stop talking when the magic changeover occurs for them to finally become “honest” men?

I guess the BOG, like Kenny Rodgers, knows when to Holden and when to fold ’em!

Running out of swords to fall on…

What a mouthful of BS from Tom Ross. Thorp’s love for UNC is eclipsed only by that of Tom Ross. Next order of business is to get rid of Tom Ross and have a BOG that is representative of all 16 campuses of the university system and not stacked 22/38 in favor of UNC-cheat… Main job of next Chancellor will be to make sure they don’t get caught again.

I guess that the “rogue Black Santa” football coach was the first to get paid off for secrecy. Could someone list the names and “titles” of all of the casualties thus far?

Thanks to any Wolfpacker that can devote the time to compile the list.

Another great day for the Wolfpack!!

From public ivy to poison ivy! Geez, the flagship is a wreck. Good thing that we have NCSU to keep OUR STATE moving forward!

Not much to see here. BOG and BOT will hire another cheat. If my memory serves me right, they fired their AD and then hired another AD that had been at a school that got a LOIC. Smart move in that they got a bigger cheat so not only would nothing change, they could learn from his previous schools mistakes and hide things better.

For the record, I interact professionally with the Chancellor and his family often; they are friendly, polite people. I hope that people continue to refrain from personal attacks on the man.
