StateFans Nation BBQ Team Continues Tradition of Excellence

Yes, it’s that time of year again! Right before the Kay Yow Spring Football game, the StateFans Nation BBQ Team will be competing in the second annual Wolfpack BBQ Bowl!

Last year, our team placed fourth overall, but more important, we won the hearts and tastebuds of former Wolfpack football players Mario Williams and Willie Young. Here’s the “hardware” we brought home.

We were proud to bring those titles back to StateFans Nation readers, but this year, we have our sights set on winning the official Wolfpack BBQ title as judged by the NC Pork Council judges!

We’ll be set up in space number 30 in the RV parking lot at Carter-Finley Stadium. Look for the StateFans Nation banner and please come say hello!

With any luck, our piggy will once again turn out like this…….

About SMD

SMD graduated from NC State at a time when beating UNC-CH in both major revenue sports was a regular occurrence. This was well before a time when I could express my frustrated attempts at being a writer on the "internets." When I'm not talking about the Pack, I'm probably arguing politics.

Are shoulders not being provided for the Lexington contestants?

And yes, I know exactly where this is headed.

Looks good. I hope you brought enough for everybody.

“Are shoulders not being provided for the Lexington contestants?”

Yes, two per pig. With picnic, loin, ribs, ham, skin attached.

    🙂

I think this is such a great idea all around. It’s great for the school to do this, and it’s awesome SMD and Co are willing to allow SFN to “sponsor.”. It’s just very cool. Good luck gentlemen. Geterdid.

I hate that turkey season drags me out of Raleigh every year for the spring game. There’s just not enough time in a day to get it all done.

The State of Texas can’t compete with BBQ from North Carolina. Good Luck with the competition.

The BBQ Song from two NC State grads. Fuquay-Varina at its best.

Wish you boys the best in the BBQ Bowl, but that Lexington stuff ain’t near as good as good ol Eastern NC style BBQ. Texas BBQ please that ain’t nothing but sauce poured over dry overcooked pork!

I will admit to sticking my nose up at other Q styles too…when I am tilting my head back and opening my mouth to stuff some of the smoky goodness into my gullet.

Each to their own, I say. 😀

Also, I always thought Texas-style Q was beef brisket.

Brisket is the BBQ of choice in Texas. It can be very good but it’s not pulled pork.

Do you have to choose sides (and I ain’t talkin’ hush puppies and slaw) in the BBQ battles? I admit to liking just about every type of BBQ I tried (although I’ve never tried mustard-based and the thought doesn’t make me want to try it either). Is that a BBQ faux pas? Is that like saying that you pull for all the Triangle teams?

I’ve tried mustard just out of curiosity and it’s not inedible, but really doesn’t entice me. White, Bama BBQ, no way, except again out of curiosity, but that’s even less appealing.

Pork or beef can be prepared in many different ways, but Q is Eastern NC style to me.

Have to confess to liking both, though Eastern NC style was my first introduction as an impressionable and youthful pork consumer and is thus my fallback. That being said, pretty much any meat product is good with me if it’s prepared correctly. Since I’ve never tried the mustard or the white Bama, I’ll yield to highstick’s experience and pass.

Damn, can you send some of that pig to me up in Boston?

  15. highstick 04/20/2012 at 5:49 PM #

I’ve got to go to Bama in September for a wedding(and I’m not too freakin’ happy about it either since it conflicts with a football game). But, I’m going to look for some of that white pork. Gives me the creeps just thinking about it. I like mayo on my ham sandwiches and burgers, but Q??

I’ve created me a pretty special dry rub and Memphis sauce for my baby backs, but I don’t like those “too wet”..

Never been to the barbeque, where is it, and how do you purchase a tix, and the cost?
