Butch Davis on 620 AM 11:30(live link included)

Yes, the Charles Robinson who broke the story last night.

Go here to listen live.

The general spin of UNC callers and fans on the Internet is that this is old news. Supposedly UNC and the NCAA knew about this weeks ago when Blake resigned. However, why does that matter? Does it make the accusations any less damaging that the NCAA and UNC already knew?

At least one UNC fan has a clue on this debacle. Tarheelfanblog has done a great job on this story so far:

Hey Baddour, That Light You Saw Was A Thermonuclear Detonation

In light of these revelations, which appear to be true, there is only one course UNC can set at this point. The first is Butch Davis can no longer be the head football coach. The football program, athletic department and by extension the University has been compromised in an incredible manner. While Davis may not have known what Blake was doing, he should have known given how long it went on. Hopefully Davis will do the honorable thing and step aside but if not the Chancellor Holden Thorp is left with little choice but to ask for his resignation or terminate him. Secondly, UNC needs to dismiss Marvin Austin immediately. Since Austin is not even practicing, this is not much of a leap but his role in this mess has been defined from the beginning. This is the final nail in his coffin. Third, once the Williams and Burney appeals are done, UNC needs to allow the hammer to fall where it may with the remaining players in limbo. Let the NCAA do its thing. Let the honor court do its thing. Accept those rulings and move on the best you can.

Summation of interview:

-California and Miami trips are not connected. They involve different people. MA has been talking to so many people.

-The marketing reps name in this story wasn’t known by anyone before they reported it last night.

-More is to come from Yahoo Sports. The story is so complicated that they have to chop it up and go with what they have.

-In regards to Butch Davis, a lot has been external. With Wichard, it was a Blake/Wichard relationship. Up until this point, he hasn’t seen any direct involvement with Butch Davis. However, the question of whether Butch should have known is a legitimate question?

-This story is unique. Relationships with coaches and agents have always been an issue, but it has never gotten to the point where there was specific evidence linking a coach and an agent(specifically the credit card is troubling). He can’t answer what the NCAA will do, however it is a serious problem when a coach is this tied to an agent.

You guys should read the comments in Tar Heel Fan’s blog article on this story. The author gets it — he has wrapped his head around what just came out. His readers? Not so much. Not at all, in fact. It’s pure comedy gold, that is, if you find cognitive dissonance amusing:

I wonder if Charles knows about Wayne Ellington’s free house?????

  3. Old MacDonald 09/30/2010 at 9:09 AM #

So UNC knew about all of this and have been covering it up? Is that really the spin? That spin actually makes it look worse for them.

  4. SeaWolf 09/30/2010 at 9:09 AM #

Alpha, this is from the first comment on that post:

“I do think Butch had some knowledge about Blake and Wichard, hence the forced resignation of Blake earlier this season.”

LOL @ “forced resignation.” How much must these people spin this?

  5. Daily Update 09/30/2010 at 9:14 AM #

If UNC did know, then it makes you wonder why Butch wasn’t forced to resign? Even if they hoped it would work out and Butch was clueless on this whole deal(all prongs), then you still have to part ways with Butch to send the message that you are moving on in an effort to get in front of the story.

This wouldn’t be as big of a deal if UNC had already severed ties with Butch. Instead, they look a lot worse.

Taylor Zarzour said that a prominent member of the media — whoever that is — just said that the UNC Board of Governors is going to ask every school in the UNC System to do a similar investigation as UNC-CH inside their schools.

Nice. UNC-CH cheats and now the UNC system wants to let them get away with it AND drag every system school into their cesspool.

On the other hand, you can say “nothing to worry about, we’re clean.”

What I don’t like is their blatant attempt to build a de facto guilt by association perception.

  7. primacyone 09/30/2010 at 9:31 AM #

Just heard Talor announce that he got an email stating the UNC Board of Governers is thinking of requiring all UNC systems schools to investigate themselvels in a similar manner as UNC. Really.

Just to think, I was laughing this morning when completing that poll on the right. I knew that is what Boyles was trying to accomplish.

    Alpha from that blog:
“We’ll just have to wait & see what happens. It might not be as bad as one would think/project on our program. Still seems limited to just a handful of personele. How broad can you cast a punishment net with things involving limited players? And who knows when the dust even settles? I hate to see wins vacated, but I’d take that over futuristic punishments. The article does seem damning, but leaves a few questions, and hopefully those will be on our side.”

Yeah, OK. Lots of loopholes there. unx will probably get off for not having their miramda rights read to them or something….just like USC got off because only Reggie Bush was involved.

  9. tractor57 09/30/2010 at 9:38 AM #

I heard that also. So there is an indication that Elizabeth City State has the same issues?

  10. LKNpackfan 09/30/2010 at 9:39 AM #

^That would be inprudent and unreasonable, but if it comes to be, TOB will be fine. He’s been kicking guys off the squad left and right for 4 yrs now.

  11. GAWolf 09/30/2010 at 9:40 AM #

That angers the hell out of me. I’m guessing the SBI will be brought back in to investigate all the other schools while UNC can still do its own. I’m joking, but that is just as absurd.

  12. tractor57 09/30/2010 at 9:45 AM #

GA if that happens I sure want a full report publicized.

Spin all you want but the baby blues have been caught – period.

  13. MatSci94 09/30/2010 at 9:47 AM #

SC ‘got off’ with significant penalties (vacated wins, postseason ban, 3 yrs of scholarship reducions) even though it was only one player, the benefits went to the family and not the player himself, and the person who knew/should have known was only the position coach.

UNC is 4-6(?) players (just for the agent part), multiple trips, possibly multiple agents (CA and Miami), and tied directly to the Associate HC.

BTW, am I correct in reading Associate HC as 2nd in command of the program? Why is noone else picking up on this. This isn’t some “rogue” GA or jr position coach.

  14. jbpackfan 09/30/2010 at 9:52 AM #

Board of Gov’s thought process: It can’t just be our beloved Tarheels, it’s going on everywhere.. Where was the investigation of UNC in the early 90s to “make sure” nothing was going on at the time?

And again the national media breaks the story. Where is the local media?

  15. Alpha Wolf 09/30/2010 at 9:57 AM #

    ^ EXACTLY.

Try to drag the other big programs down into their mud, because it can’t be just them, can it.

What a sorry-ace bunch of corrupt bastards they are over on the Board of Governors.

  16. primacyone 09/30/2010 at 10:06 AM #

“What a sorry-ace bunch of corrupt bastards they are over on the Board of Governors.”

That really is the truth. 100% truth.

I hate Carolina. Part of that disdain is due to the holier than thou attitude they have tried to push down our throats for the last 20 years.

    Crow. Eat it.

The local media’s LACK of coverage of this story only adds fuel to my internal fire of hatred. When I am “breaking” news this big to my colleagues at work… there is no other way to describe that other than outright MEDIA BIAS.

Last I checked… not a mention on the N&O website this morning. Disgusting. And typical.

I hope this is nothing more than a complete destruction of their football program.

Cheater’s never win and Winner’s never cheat. It’s as clear as the “Carolina Way” vs. The “RIGHT WAY”.

    The end.

^^I was just going to ask where the investigation into all other schools was during the 90s. I guess I just don’t understand the BOGs approach on this…the “flagship” gets caught cheating, so instead of trying to say, “This was just a bad coach at a good school”, they are now implying, “We obviously didn’t know what was happening at ‘OUR’ school, so how do we know everyone else wasn’t cheating, too? That would make it ok that UNC cheated, right?”

If I’m another school in the UNC system that gets busted for some minor violations that are found as a result of this “review”, I’d be filing a “Wrongful Investigation” claim against the BOGs. But that’s just me…

  19. GAWolf 09/30/2010 at 10:10 AM #

Certainly this would destroy the sanctity of the entire UNC system. The other Universities must clearly see now that they are treated as lesser entities and therefore this sort of thing will tear the System apart. I pray that the other member institutions fight this on principle alone. If not, never again should State fans/graduates/professors/students doubt for a second that they are the victims of a conspiracy in favor of UNC-CH.

  20. tractor57 09/30/2010 at 10:13 AM #

If it comes to pass that the BOG requires this maybe time to reform the UNC system?

  21. cWOhLFrPAiCKs 09/30/2010 at 10:15 AM #

Someone pointed out that Kentwan Balmer is the only UNC player that has signed with Whichard…does anyone else think that a LARGE group of players that came back for their senior year might have signed with him after this season?

To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if the guys who know they’re not playing college football anymore all already talking with agents to figure out how best to spin this in their favor. I expect most of the NFL will not extend punishment to these guys by letting them stay on the board after the first day. Dez Bryant didn’t play at all last year and the Cowboys still took him in the first round. That’s the worst part, for me, that these guys who took money and were working for agents will never really be punished other than having to sit out this year and payback a fraction of the money/benefits they received.

  22. ncsunacho 09/30/2010 at 10:16 AM #

“Other Schools in the UNC System” = NC State.

Name the only other D1 school in the UNC System where this would even apply…. Let’s see… That eliminates UNC-G, UNC-P, UNC-W, UNC-C, NC A&T, Winston Salem State or App State.

    My Hatred boils.

  23. YogiNC 09/30/2010 at 10:20 AM #

So now the BOG has decided to deflect some of the attention by mandating that all the other UNC system schools do an investigation into their programs???? What a bunch of Yahoos. They should be putting together the independent panel to investigate UNX. Obviously they are drinking the “everybody does it” kool-aid, and trying to lower all the other schools in the system so that their beloved UNX doesn’t look so bad. FIX THE PROBLEM, and it’s not the rest of “us”. Start at the top and fire Thorpe and work your way down. Include Roy boy while you’re at it.

  24. Plz2BStateFan 09/30/2010 at 10:21 AM #

If NC State football handles this correctly. This will launch us as THE football school for the state of NC.

This could be a big time launching point for NC State as a football school.
