Why the Incorrect Boxscore Matters

Yesterday we ran a quick entry about our observation that there were two different boxscores – and therefore one incorrect boxscore – issued for the UNO @ NC State game on Sunday night.

We received a note from someone simply explaining that NC State issued two box scores for the game. That was a polite way of saying that somehow NC State screwed up the first boxscore and

Why is this important?

Well, take a look at this article in today’s N&O focused on the topic of playing time. The article states the following:

Hickson started both games, playing 30 minutes in each. McCauley was in for 14 minutes against William & Mary in the season-opener and then nine minutes against UNO.

You see, that’s incorrect. The N&O is doing what anyone would do and using the WRONG boxscore issued by NC State’s crack Sports Information Department. McCauley actually played 14 minutes vs UNO (and William & Mary).

I know that a lot of you were wondering why we bothered with this boxscore issue yesterday. You see, we knew that the issues related to playing time were going to be heavily scrutinzed by the media – as they should be – and therefore the raw data and information needed for the discussions desperately needed to be as accurate as possible.

Well, we were right. And now the ‘facts’ provided in many conversations by fans and the media are going to be based on incorrect data. Of course a few minutes here and few minutes there does not represent the coming of the apocolypse…but, we tend to want to have conversations and analysis based on accurate data.

Good point. We’ll see if the N&O runs a correction, or even comments on it.

Remember how they used to throw the halftime stats down from the press box to the floor at Reynolds… We’d cheer when the guy actually caught them. Good times.

Hickson got credit for 3 blocks on Sunday night…obviously he had a lot more than that.

It just amazes me how many simple things (not to mention complex things) under Foulup’s authority get fouled up!

More than just the confusion it creates, is the perception. How does it look when the athletics department at a school world renowned for engineering, can’t do simple math. Get it together Foulup!

Hey, Lee knows basketball. He doesn’t need correct box scores.

This has to be the worst fall sports in many a year at our school. How many wins and losses do we have acroos all sports. I bet we have won less than 15% of our fall sports vs ACC competition.
