Well, as I write this, the “dealmakers” are up to their three piece suits on BS. From what I read and also know from sources deep within the bowels of Jones Street and other places…
HB2 will be “officially” killed today. NOW, that is a MAYBE as the Charlotte City Council is meeting, as I write, to CLEAN UP the “mess” they made on Monday as it did NOT satisfy the NCGA. This is a classic case of NEVER TRUST the OTHER SIDE (either one). If you give an inch, they will take your “generosity” to COURT and get a MILE.
SO, from a sports perspective, the NCAA and the ACC and the NBA and another “PC Organization” will have NO reason to boycott NC. SO, what was the outcome…
When Charlotte passed the “Houston” version of the LBGTQ anti-discrimination legislation, they “upped the ante”. Greensboro, Durham, Asheville, Carrboro, Chapel Hill and maybe several other NC cities already HAD the Anti-Discrimination on the books. It was Charlotte that decided to flex their legislative might and add in the PEE WHERE YOU WANNA PEE clause. That SAME clause was the rallying cry that got the Houston residents to VOTE IT DOWN….67% or MORE. So, the Houston residents threw OUT the law. NOTICE, the NCAA did NOT pull the Final Four and still has various sport championships STILL scheduled there.
SO, the idiots in Charlotte done defecated in their mess kits. BUT, not to be OUTDONE, the learned and duly elected NCGA decided to SQUASH that turkey. Instead of a piece of Legislation that said….you can NOT PEE WHERE YOUR WANT TO PEE, then loaded it up with more Pork than Obama would put in an Executive Order.
Quickly, the REV BB and the National DNC figured out that IF HB2 was a Rallying CRY, then they could get $$ for the folks that fall for any excuse when they are constantly imbibing on the Kool AID. Money flowed in like the Sailor’s pay at the Bar and Brothel Lounge. There was a MOVE to reverse the Charlotte Ordinance in May. NOPE, the Pollsters said it would DRY up the MONEY. Then, the same in September. NOPE, need MORE MONEY….and we need to KEEP HRC in the lead and get NC’s Electoral Votes….and Roy is moving up on Patty. SO, the NC and National DNC advised Charlotte NOT TO COMPROMISE. THEN, a funny thing happened on the way to the polls.
PEOPLE REVOLTED. Yogi can quote the statistics. Bear in MIND, it was the surrounding counties around Charlotte that were pushing, as well as Mecklenberg, for REVERSAL and THAT pressure was what prompted the HB2 passage. Patty DID pay the price (the Charlotte I-77 Toll helped), BUT the NCGA power needle barely MOVED. Burr prevailed. Trump Prevailed. SO, all that money poured into NC lined the pockets of the MEDIA. Wonder WHY the MEDIA kept fueling this?
NOW, old Roy figured out that it would be EASIER to get the NCGA to reverse it BEFORE he took office. It would COST HIM DEARLY (Political Capital) if he had to FIGHT for it. He could declare it a “benefit” from his election….without the ensuring battle in 2017. SO, maybe this saga will pass….who KNOWS. If you were really aware of the aforementioned history, you obviously do NOT get all your news from the MSM and you are politically in the top 90 Percentile.
Conclusion…..the NCAA and the ACC and the NBA and any other Sports or NON-Sports enterprise can come to NC without being called an “IST”.
I certainly HOPE that all those that donated the millions to get Roy elected, now that he has been emasculated by the NCGA as was every OTHER Republican Governor in HISTORY by the Democrats are HAPPY.
The LBGTQ crowd ought to really be pleased….now Charlotte has the SAME WATERED DOWN ordinance as the OTHER NC cities.
They paid the price, but got NO prize. Sort of makes you wonder if they are really politically astute enough to know that their rights were NEVER, EVER the issue, but how their members and their rallying cries could be used for PURE POLITICAL POWER.
I think that they ought to add P to their initials or acronym. P is NOT for PEE but for Pawn. MAYBE TWO P’s….
LGBTQPP….that should be their NEW designation…..
BUT, at least the ACC Tourney will come back. The ACC FB championship, sparsely attended, even in Charlotte will now grace the Panther’s home and the Durham Bulls will host the ACC Baseball World series….and Michael Jordan is NOW happy. Word was that he threatened to get his supporters to run against the existing Charlotte City Council and “Throw the BUMS OUT”.

Out of 9,5000,000 people in North Carolina that comes to roughly 4,750 people between new born to over 70 years of age.
One hell’va up roar for 0.0005% of the population of North Carolina.

12/21/2016 at 9:24 PM #112713bill.onthebeachParticipantThe Story here is NOT the language nor the merits of the Act known as HB2…
Regardless of whether you agree with HB2 or not…
Most ALL can see clearly, if they want to, the ineptitude and ignorance of some of those who, when elected and sent to Raleigh, call themselves “Leaders of the People”.
The Question of the Day has to be:
What else could the Leaders of the People have been doing to help rebuild the State of North Carolina?
Anything else is suspect, in the least, or wrong, at it’s worst.#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!12/21/2016 at 9:25 PM #112714AdventurooParticipantBTOB,
Guest Keene Nettleford is actually a rather big deal. They are a leading auto supplier. I had many friends that worked for them and they paid excellent wages and had good working conditions and great benefits. They expanded from their original Sanford NC plant and also bought a Gear company right down the road from my parents home in Catawba county.
YES…it will be great theater. The deal PROBABLY would have gone through save a few things…
Charlotte pulled their little “Shenanigan” about only taking out SOME of their stupid bill….which WAs voted down….and there MAY be some challenges to the city council. Elections DO have consequences and the Holier than Thou Mayor has really done doneded it to NC.
Second, the Gaystopo Commandants were out in full force on CNN and MSNBC and the like. Bragging that THEY would get THEIR troops rallied and every small burg with at least 1000 citizens WOULD PASS THE CHARLOTTE Resolution….and then sort of said….UP YOURS, NCGA. That type of gamesmanship did NOT set too well in Raleigh.
Again, if you read the articles….guess who is fighting it the MOST and DOES NOT trust the Charlotte City Council….the Reps from the surrounding counties.
Ole’ Roy is already on the tube….the MSM is forming a TRAIN for him to perform for….and he will NOT say NO….he will keep opening his mouth.
It AIN’T gonna be pretty when the Legislature meets. Old Roy Cooper will have to go hat in hand just to get TP for the Governor’s mansion. However, if you follow NC’s history, that is the SAME tactic that the OTHER side used on every Republican Governor. They would STRIP out his perks in a late session….then when THEIR KIND was elected, go in and restore them all.
I have a relative that was “RIFFED” from the DMV when a Republican came in. She actively campaigned ON THE JOB and was given TIME OFF to do political stuff. Her lad did NOT get elected and she got “ratted on”. She was personna non gratta. The Wake County DNC took her in and she worked for them. BINGO, after the Republican was OUT, she got rehired….promoted and worked in the same office. THAT is why I feel a bit strongly about partisanship stuff….
Charlotte will still bear the BRUNT of their little skullduggery….there was also a tidbit about one of the PUSHERS of the original Charlotte ordinance having to “REGISTER” every time he moved…..but I did NOT followup on that….
Maybe he was one of the mouthpieces on MSNBC or such….

GKN is a quality company with whom I am familiar… solid, quiet, longterm, corporate citizens in all four of the counties in which they have facilities in North Carolina.
My comment was in no ways directed towards GKN…. but simply to point out that the Big Announcement of 400 plus jobs does little, if anything, for the other 86 counties in North Carolina with high real unemployment and even higher poverty rates.
Nor does a little bit of economic good news, albeit quite welcome to those in the four counties, offset the Greek tragedy unfolding on West Jones Street.
#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!12/21/2016 at 10:08 PM #112717bill.onthebeachParticipantFor your consideration:
1. The majority of the Leaders of the People in Raleigh, some elected and some not, are damned tired of looking Stupid in public.
2. The Great majority of the People of North Carolina, regardless of their political affiliations, are equally damned tired of watching the Leaders of the People in Raleigh LOOK ABD BE Stupid.
3. The majority of the Leaders of the People were in favor of repealing HB2 outright.
4. Forget for moment, if you can, all the posturing and finger pointing printed in the fishwrappers, printed or digital, surrounding the saga of HB2.
5. The bottom line here is the Leaders of the People inability to make a solid political deal behind closed doors and of Each to hold their own people to that deal.
6. With a Democrat sitting in the Executive Mansion and the Republicans controlling the General Assembly, this could be the proverbial Tip of the Political Iceberg
7. The People of North Carolina, especially in the OTHER 90 POOR counties, have real problems, some of which are of our own making, others over which we had no control. Regardless, The People need real solutions, not verbosity and promises, not posturing and fingerpointing.
8. The Leaders of the People fiddle while North Carolina burns.
9. Now remember… You can’t fix Stupid. Stupid is as Stupid does. That’s what our Mamas told us.
10. Even worst… if you’re really Stupid — how will you know? Nobody can tell you because you aren’t smart enough to understand what people tell you.
That my friends is the Nicebigfatstupid Conundrum which faces us.
The next Act starts in January, 2017….

Please define those “real solutions” the people need.
McCallum
12/21/2016 at 11:21 PM #112719bill.onthebeachParticipantMacCallum, of course…
Let’s start with the massive redistribution of real wealth — assets and people — over the last couple decades from all the 90 counties to 10, or worst outside the State.
Then we’ll talk about Jobs that pay a Living Wage, Affordable Housing, Government that’s not a Growth Industry of it’s own, the Quality of Life and a solid Future for our Children and Grand Children.
The first step in finding the solution is correctly defining the problem.
Now I can understand if you think that’s a little bit “Global”.
In North Carolina… Unfortunately, the political game plan appears to be for some time now to let those counties wither and die until most of their economies become absorbed by the six metropolitan cities. What’s not said out loud is that’s a fifty year plan at best. The problem in part, correctly stated, is that just ain’t gonna happen fast enough.
So in the meantime… NC government needs to cut out the BS, forget national social agendas, focus on serving the People where they live, trim it’s own sails and start moving some serious resources to the 90 other counties…. if for no other reason than why should the People pay for their own suffering, not that there are not many other reasons.

Of course it is global. The concentrating of populations out of rural and semi rural areas, from towns less than 5,000-10,000 to 40,000 to metro areas has only accelerated under the ideology of globalization. I wrote several pieces 15 plus years ago on future impact that various trade agreements would have on North Carolina. City and county tax bases have been greatly reduced with the lack of manufacturing jobs, industries always paid the bulk of the taxes so that shifted the local tax burden away from the individual. An example if you would allow, because industry purchased water and sewer in bulk, local governments were typically flush with cash and that allowed for a lower tax rate at the local level. There are cultural considerations as well as you funnel people into cul de sacs and their concept of culture becomes more commercial and national instead of local and regional.
In the absence of jobs which “produce wealth” the power of the government will and must grow. The acceleration to the urban is a response to the lack of jobs and opportunity which were once found in cities like Salisbury, Burlington, Hickory, Lexington, Asheboro, Kannapolis, etc and the list goes on and on.
The problem is rampant unrestrained capitalism. It, like communism, is an ideology based on a corruption of reason. If low cost and profit margin are all that matter then concepts and beliefs that help to glue a community together are simply road blocks to profit. North Carolinians might well agree that wages should be higher, that reasonable environmental and worker protections are needed, that companies should provide health care (thus taking out of the governments hands), etc but that drives up the cost of business so companies simply produce it in China. So the very culture and views that brought progress to North Carolina now stand in the way of profit because capitalism requires the use of labor in a country that has inferior health, wages, environmental regulations, insurance etc. to find the greatest return on the investment. Capitalism as practiced now can only function through the production of goods in countries that deny the basic rights considered to be prerequisite for progress. A functioning coherent middle class is essential for stability, it can be the by product of worshipping market forces but it is not the goal of the market or capitalism.
Any sensible policy or policies must reign in the capitalist ideology of profit regardless.

Simply put… the production economy has over-produced itself into a subsistence economy… and is incapable of reversing itself.
During the same time, there have been huge growth industries built in new sectors…
Health Care
Law Enforcement
EducationNone of these, however, were built on the basis of supply and demand and thus suffer from various “inefficiencies”.
We hear and talk a lot about the loss of manufacturing jobs. In the mid and late 1980s, 30% of so of the jobs in the United States were in Sales, Customer Service and related areas. Today, those jobs account for less than 10%. Those were good jobs too, but we don’t hear about their disappearance.
We know those jobs are not coming back. Truth is…. most people don’t want those jobs to come back, especially the manufacturing jobs with their pollution.
Bottom line is there are no jobs to put in the 90 counties.
But… people have to have work — that is, a place to go everyday where they find significant parts of their identity, meaning and purpose in life and pick a few coins so they can feel good about taking care of themselves and their families.
Or not.
Perhaps this offers one glimpse into the future..
Mayor Hartsfield of Atlanta said during the later years of the Civil Rights movement… “Atlanta was a city that was too busy to hate.”
We’ll find out if the opposite — An educated but lazy people have plenty of time to hate — is equally as true.
Twenty more years of a subsistence economy will begin to answer these questions.
#NCSU-North Carolina's #1 FOOTBALL school!12/22/2016 at 8:18 AM #112727McCallumParticipantbotb,
It will not take 20 years.
Your comment on “pollution” is non sense BTW.
The dollar as reserve currency has allowed the notion that one can be a non producer and enjoy the fruits of labor. Once that decoupling takes place, a sense of balance will return but not without some great upheaval.
There were never many jobs in many of those 90 counties. Gates County ain’t never been anything but soybeans, swamp and Conway. Your point would better be made in taking about places like Erwin, Roanoke Rapids, Reidsville, High Point, Morganton, Waynesville etc.
The masters of finance brought this about. May the pox on their houses put all past punishments to shame.

12/22/2016 at 6:10 PM #112753bill.onthebeachParticipantThat’s the gray area of sorts…
As you know, I have some old ties to the homeplace… which is 25 minutes from I-85 and 20 years away from prosperity…
Fact is that’s exactly what I said 20-25 years ago during my political days…
“There’s a Million People living 1 – 1.5hrs away and you GOTT to drive 30 minutes to see the first one…”
Now there’s Two Million and it still takes 30 minutes to see the first one…
Without looking at a map and counting… I’m thinking closer to 60… but you could be closer…
But that does NOT mean the rest don’t deserve their fair share of resources from Raleigh.———————-
Here’s a big part of it…
Population of North Carolina
e- estimated
c- census1970
5,084,411 c1980
5,880,095 c1990
6,628,637 c2000
8,049,313 c2010
9.562,000 c2016
10,146,788 eRun that on out another 15-20 years…
and it’s 20,000,000 more or less…
and a lot of those folks will choose to “spill over” into the 40-60 county “gray” area…Before some suggest the Big Solution is already at work… consider this…
The question is “Where will they work… Business or Government or Home ?
Not everybody can work at Home… most of the 90 counties barely have wall-to-wall cell towers, much less internet…
How is it possible for The People of North Carolina to be able to “afford” the economic and the social/cultural costs of Big Government and Big Business at the same time?
More people == more opportunities AND more problems, not more opportunities and less problems…
But don’t think I’m in favor of building a wall, ’cause I’m not….
==================And yes.. the bigger truth here is…
There ain’t a damn thing special in this regard about the Old North State.Same thing’s going on 40 out of 50 of the rest of the States…

I read that “study” a few days back and was confused since NC was equated with Cuba why would that be a bad thing? Didn’t the MSM and world leaders (the globalization gang of them) just give the former Cuba leader a hero’s send off and funeral?
I also don’t recall outage and knashing of teeth in 2004 or 2009 when the state of Massachusetts legislative body first stripped Gov Romney of senatorial appointment power so that he could not select a replacement for Kerry if he won the election and then reinstated the senatorial appointment power for Gov Patrick so he could appoint a replacement for Kennedy upon his death (needed for healthcare reform vote in the Senate). This would certainly be an example of one party controlling the process against the will of people (as they stripped Romney of the power because only the people should decide who is their senator) in an undemocratic fashion.
Not defending what the outgoing NC gov did just wondering why when one side does it is for the good of the people and when other side does it they (and anyone who might have voted for them) are labeled undemocratic, rascist, homophobic and any other slander one (or Seth Davis) can think of.
12/26/2016 at 7:31 AM #112869tractor57ParticipantIt’s all in who has the podium. Like the debate over NC Congressional districts – both parties have played that game to the determent of the state as a whole. I also will not defend Pat (or Roy for that matter) – it is all political theater and designed to attain and keep power.
