ECU

Every picture tells a story.

More? Ok.

I like the Pirates Down East. Yep, sure do. I do not share a Wolven disgust for where those Purple and Gold peeps mark their scent trails. I pull for ’em every chance affordable…football, baseball, pig pickin’, oyster shuckin’, striper catchin’, COWGIRL boot wearin…name it.

Back in the playing days, you could say that we (Pack) absolutely owned their ball clubs. I’m sure that had something to do with the friendly way we, Pack players, cavorted with their kind. And we most certainly did.

Anyway, who cares about that crap, right? State and the Pirates square off once again in the cozy, confines of Dowdy-Ficklen. The taste of 2010 is still palpable on the tongues of both fan bases, no? (Did you know that TOB didn’t get his team buses into Greenville til 7:00 PM that Friday night? Unusual.)

One game into the season, with both teams coming off from dominating wins at the expense of scholarship handicapped foes, I have no clue for the outcome. Sure, I know that both clubs will attempt to “outspeeddrill” the respective D’s, but who exerts the will in the trenches decides this one.

Ahww…the lead. The picture that tells the story. Well that, right there, is one Ulmo Shannon “Sonny” Randle, Jr.

It’s only Tuesday.

I went back and watched the first two drives from Thursday’s game, hoping to learn more about the new offense. I like it. It’s probably not going to be really flashy, obviously we used a lot of high percentage throws. Two plays stood out to me:

Empty Backfield with Finley in the gun, JSam in the field slot with two WRs outside of him, two WRs on the boundary. Outside WRs ran 5 yard curls, JSam ran a slant over the middle, and the other two WRs ran deep crossing routes to open the space. Pass complete to JSam and then he had a nice downfield block from a WR to get a nice gain. Finely had 3/5 wide open (slant & the 2 curls) and with the right touch might have been able to hit one of the deep posts. It might not be razzle dazzle, but Finley had options on that play.

I forget the exact personnel package, but shotgun, dayes lined up left of Finley. Cole cook lined up out in the slot. After the snap, dayes runs to the left sideline like he’s going to take a swing pass, and Finley is looking at him like he’s waiting on him to turn to dump it off. Instead, he rotates and tosses it to cook for about a 10 yard gain. Nothing flashy, but I liked that Finley used his head to draw the defenders into thinking he’s going to dump it to dayes (which may be a go to play this year) and at the last second throws it to the middle of the field.

Like I said, it may not be the flashiest offense, but it seems like we will spread it out to make high percentage throws. I’m a fan of it. Only complaint was that sometimes our bubble screens were predictable or slow to develop.

Besides who wants to read snappy Wolfpack put-downs, which many posters think is real entertainment. I know I get very tired of them. If I want to read that kind of “humor” I’ll go over to Inside Carolina for it.

    Yep.

That and all the Ovies wannabees.

I’ve heard from reliable sources that ECU is not William and Mary. Does this make any difference?

So who left Bill or Mary? Yes I’m kidding and no doubt ECU is a more difficult to handle. That is at it should be.

I heard from the same reliable sources that Mary stayed on campus for our game. A good thing too. I also heard that the Wolfpack is not Western Carolina and will be more for ECU to handle. That also is as it should be.

I have no additional comments about the game…it’s taken me 3 days to absorb the “Moderator” tag on CD! Maybe the great Northern Ash trees will make a comeback!

Oh yes lemme put in my 2 cents on CD writing on the main blog… At times may need a decoder ring but I’ll be reading every post with fascination.

Decoder ring… out of a cracker jack box? You know those things are like gold. They sell for big bucks on Ebay. For that price you’d think they actually work. but then it is CD that we’re decoding.

    Just kidding CD.

    T swear – it’s like I am 7 again.

I got to go to bed before the game is at halftime.

Of course, I don’t to…its my choice, but it ain’t no better.

Hopefully, we will work the pie rats sabado. It will be a solid win. DD is 5-1 ats as a favorite on the road. So, in the immortal words of Carl the greenkeeper (bill Murray) – we got that going for us.

I am really quite alright with it, ya know. The Wolven leg hike to cover a Pirate scent thing…wish I had the same instinct. I suppose that if I had not been living on the West Coast at the time of the goalpost stunt, that sense would have been developed.

Canines have excellent memories. Today is travel day, with a 2 hrs. bus ride to enemy territory. Some will kill time and settle a new anxiousness with music, some with a book, ah let’s be real…the current Pack will be on information and communication devices. Others may just kick back and let the mind take a stroll.

Sonny Randle got his coaching chops at ECU in the early 70’s, my time. By most anecdotal accounts, he was a mean one, an arrogant, miserable, tough guy task master. That was the word.

I would find out for myself, the truth behind the scuttlebutt.
    The bus ain’t here, yet.

Yea, I moved from Raleigh to Wonderful Winterville in the fall of 75 and started grad school at ECU in the spring quarter of 76. I was not a happy camper listening to their BS nor Randle(who I always thought was a babbling idiot)!

Me either. When I was in school, the football game was mostly a preamble to the dorm parties that followed. Things obviously turned ugly sometime after I graduated.

As a student from ’76 to ’80, our favorite game was the ECU game. Party weekend. We used to say the ECU game was for students and the uncch game was for alumni.

Has anyone had luck streaming our games with Kodi?

I cut the cable a few months ago and am now using an Amazon firestick with Kodi installed.

I’m still wandering in the wilderness of thousands of channels, and can find plenty of soccer(football) games, but I’m having a hard time finding American football.
    Thanks for any help.

GO PACK! EC-TC sux, but not as bad as UNX.

Nah, US sports are very hard to get unless you’re part of a private community. I finally resorted to paying for Sling for a season, which….I wouldn’t do again.

Ah,yes. The familiar aroma of diesel and disinfectant, perfume to the traveling baller.

I played my college summer baseball in the Shenandoah Valley League. In 1974 it was for a team out of Charlottesville. We were housed in a block of 3 bedroom apartments, which were very nice digs…furnished, too. Our immediate neighbors were comprised of UVa jocks attending summer sessions, one of whom was a guy by the name of Scott Gardner, starting QB and pitching staff ace. We knew each other.

In the last week of July, our season was over, having failed to make the playoffs. My 2 roomies made quick getaways, pretty much followed by the rest of the club. I had a different plan. It wasn’t the end of the month yet, I liked the town, there was no immediate rush to get back to Raleigh, so I decided to ride out a weekend. No one said I couldn’t, and besides, there was this enchanting young lady that worked in the UVa athletic offices…and me with an apartment to myself for the weekend. It all sounded like a good idea.

Sunday morning, my friend and I were shocked from sleep by this persistent, angry sounding bang on the front door. PO’ed,I rolled out of the sack and opened the front door to a blinding blast of sunlight. “What?!”

“What the hell are you doing in my building?”
Because of the sunlight I couldn’t make out the voicer, but I sure could the tone. I went out the door, closing it behind me. About the time my eyes focused on this rather stocky middle aged man,an arm went to the door. I blocked it. In turn I got damn strong shove to the chest, and a confusing glimpse of facial recognition. Coach Sonny Randle? What the hell was he doing up here?
Then it hit me. He was here, because he was no longer in Greenville, dummy. He had taken the HC job at UVa! “Now Coach,”I said.”I have plans to leave later this afternoon.”
The crooked fingers trying to poke holes in my chest had other plans.

    I got this major predicament.
    A) First and foremost, I have this very sweet girl who now walks the same work halls with this lunatic frothing at the mouth, that is about to be compromised, potentially, seriously.
    B) This NC State baller is about to get into a physical altercation with a major college HC.
    I ain’t likin’ them apples.

    “Coach. Give me an hour.”

“I’ll give you 15 seconds.” And with that, he’s planted another in my chest and through the door. He strides down the hall to the back bedrooms. Vacant. He marches toward my room, on past the bathroom (door closed? Hmmm.)
He gets to my room and it’s empty, said for my belongings.(Good girl.) Sonny spotted a hamper full of freshly washed clothes, snatched it,stomped to the front yard, and slung it.(What a dick, but how am I gonna get her out cleanly?)

Out of nowhere comes another voice.
“Coach. I got this. I know (CD.) He’s cool. Let me handle it.” Scott. My man Scott Gardner. Randle looks at him, sneers to me, looks back at Scotty, and then his watch.

“I’ll be back in a couple of hours. Make sure he’s gone in one.”

The very first day back to the Case Center, I received a message. Willis needs to see you…now. I knew…Sonny. Sonny #%&*# Randle.

So…I don’t have riotous Pirates in my past and when I think about the incident that July, I don’t put Randle and UVa together.
ECU spawned his career. That’s where I connect him. Yeah. I guess I’d be happy to jack a hind leg after all.
