NC State frontcourt getting national press

While media attention is going to initially shine on the need for Trevor Lacy and Cat Barber to lead the young installment of 2014-2015 NC State Basketball, I think that the talent and depth of the young frontcourt may be overlooked by the average college basketball follower. I think we are all in for quite a treat this season as we will watch tremendous development and improvement amongst the Wolfpack’s four talented interchangeable post players.

I am particularly excited about watching Kyle Washington, and I think the talent and depth of Bee Jay Anya, Lennard Freeman & Abdul-Malik Abu is going to give NC State a much more potent punch than many are expecting in the preseason; as these guys develop during the year, this is going to be come a very dangerous team.

NBC Sports College Basketball Talk deserves some credit for taking notice of the Pack and recognizing how good this unit can become. CBT just listed NC State’s frontcourt as the 20th best unit in the country.

Like UNC, this ranking could turn out to be too low by the end of the season. BeeJay Anya’s in far better shape than he was last season, and players such as Jordan Washington, Lennard Freeman and Abdul-Malik Abu will be factors as well.

I know that you need more Wolfpack in your life today…so, click here and get to it!

^ The only thing I would argue with is “everyone else.” I’ll be surprised if Gott can keep 10 guys in every game, he admits that 9 was unusual for him last year. But I hope he does.

    Here’s my take:
Turner 12 (increase of 1.5 over last year)
    Barber 12 (+ 3.5)
Lacey 11 (thats what he scored at Alabama)
    Lee 9 (+0.6)
    Wash 7 (+ 2.2)
    Freeman 5 (+ 1)
    Anya 10 (+ 7.9)
Abu, Martin, Martin 4 (that’s what Nard got last year)

That is 78 ppg, about the same that DU & UNC averaged last year. Anya is the only massive increase in points, and he’ll certainly get the chance to score that much. Any kind of defense at all and this should do us really well.

I was thinking of it as season long averages, which means it will include garbage time. However, I agree, where I said I might be a bit high, the first thing I’d knock off is that 2 points, since we have a roster that goes 10 deep without including the end of bench guys. That will probably limit the scoring outside of that group of 10 players.

We should also expect some players to miss some games, meaning it isn’t appropriate to sum the individual averages to get the team’s average. Last season, the team averaged 71.1 ppg, but the individual player averages summed to 74.6 ppg. So where we came up with 78-80 ppg, the team will likely average a bit less.

Last year TJW had 113 offensive rebounds. The next closest to him was Freeman at 72. Vandenberg had 56. To average more points as a team than we did last year we are going to have to make up those numbers. Only a few can create their own shot on this team on consistent basis. Don’t know how well of a shooting team we will have. Crashing the boards will be a point of emphasis through out the season. You can call me Captain Obvious!

Maybe Abu can be this year’s Freeman, that would help.

I think Abu is closer to Leslie athleticism wise, only without the mental stuff.

I hope we are working on Free Throw shooting. It killed us last year.

I think the rotation this year will be mostly 8 guys, with the Martin twins expanding that to 10 as needed. Easing them into the rotation is warranted by where they are in terms of health and development.

Abu is gonna play A LOT.

I agree. The twins will get their main opportunity next year, when Turner and Lee are gone.
