Well, that was fun. It was one of those perfect North Carolina November days, the atmosphere inside Carter-Finley was great, and that team we saw could’ve competed with anyone in the nation yesterday. But it was also mind-numbingly frustrating after last week’s trip to Chestnut Hill. Where on earth has yesterday’s team been?

Yesterday’s win wasn’t just TOB’s first over a Top 10 opponent (at State), it was also the perfect microcosm of the TOB tenure: it is indeed true that we never have any clue which team will show up each week. And let’s be honest, all yesterday’s win does is set us up to, once again, have our hopes crushed by our bugaboo Maryland.

Amidst State’s dominance of the Atlantic Division champions, David Amerson set a new ACC mark for single-season interceptions with his 11th pick and T.J. Graham became the all-time ACC leader in kickoff return yardage.

I doubt many of us saw the State-Vanderbilt game, since many of us were at the football game and it was broadcast only on ESPN3. State lost 86-79.

    Umm. There are no links.

Football: Our future is in our own hands. Will we follow though with a substantial win against UM or do as we did against BC after the Carolina game. We shall see but i have some hope that we follow though as we should and become bowl eligible, yet I am a pragmatic state alumnus that expects the worse.

Basketball thus far has played better than any time during Lowe’s tenure. There is a glimmer of hope that we might have a real coach that can teach as we go through the year and we see improvement. Listened to the game on the way home from the football game and realized how much we miss Wood’s 3’s.

  3. logarithm 11/20/2011 at 2:59 PM #

At least it’ll be a home game where we either finish strong or embarrass ourselves against Maryland.

I think we miss the very THREAT of 3s from Scott Wood the most. He doesn’t always post double-digit points but every defense knows they’ve got to respect him from any range and it spreads defenses out. Give our forwards that kind of space in the paint and they score and get second chances.

  4. JSRy2k 11/20/2011 at 3:16 PM #

    TOB post-game:
“I told them tonight, I’m still mad at them for losing the last one (at Boston College). I’m not going to forget that one. The only way for them to make that up is to beat Maryland.”

I know some have criticized him for laying blame on the players, but I think this is a brilliant tactic. If we don’t have a fire lit under us we’ll lose to Maryland – again – and TOB’s job will probably be in doubt.

  5. hoop 11/20/2011 at 3:43 PM #

TOB has a lot of positive qualities but being able to motivate players is not one of them. See Wake Forest, Boston College, Maryland, etc.

If it were an away game I’d say we would lose. But since this is a home game I imagine we win and go bowling.

Does anybody but me have problems with the WRAL videos? I can hear the stinking commercials at the start, but as soon as TOB of Amerson start talking, silence envelops the area. This has been an ongoing frustration for years.

  7. ancsu87 11/20/2011 at 4:56 PM #

It was a great game and the third game in a row that the defense showed up and stepped it up. Maybe I am an optimist but I am surprised that so few are talking about the defense and the overall game..or enjoying it.

  8. nav 11/20/2011 at 5:22 PM #

44–I have the same problem with WRAL videos. The commercials are loud but no or very, very low sound on the videos.

I to am loving watching this D perform so well. Hard to be surprised by the melancholy fringe-can’t rip on Archer tirelessly, and having low profile prep recruits like DE Art Norman devastate opponents spurns our contingent of armchair recruiting coordinators. Although who could resist the opportunity to ridicule our new student athletes and future Alums all while backing it up by saying its their right as an State Alum.

“And let’s be honest, all yesterday’s win does is set us up to, once again, have our hopes crushed by our bugaboo Maryland.”

Really? That’s all it does? I was amused by reading the open football thread yesterday. We get down 3-0 and the comments were brutal. We win big, and all the naysayers already have us losing to Maryland. C’mon, the culture is changing. We are going to have success in basketball over the next few years, and who knows with football? Let’s enjoy the ride and begin expecting wins instead of bemoaning losses that haven’t even happened yet.

  11. GAWolf 11/20/2011 at 6:31 PM #

    VT, let it go man.

  12. GAWolf 11/20/2011 at 6:41 PM #

If y’all don’t understand why many of us aren’t setting ourselves up for major disappointment next week by believing our football team and staff have found their way out of the jungle of frustration that’s been our season, then you kids haven’t been State fans long enough.

Go back and look into a technical foul against Damon Thornton against Marland that literally led to Herb’s ouster years later. It was the beginning of the end for him. Look at te last time we were teetering on bowl eligibility and see who dashed those dreams.

We’re all pleased with the drumming we gave the alleged 7th team in the nation, but history says Saturday night we’ll all be thinking about what might have been and next fall we’ll be watching yet another football coach trying to prove himself in Raleigh.

I like TOB and wish him well here. I would bet the farm on the fact we crap the bed Saturday. I hope I’m farmless Saturday night and look forward to watching us in a bowl game.

“Look at te last time we were teetering on bowl eligibility and see who dashed those dreams.”

Actually, 4 years ago, we were 5-6 going into the last game of the season against Miami – and we kicked their butt.

Keep in mind, the year UMd rolled us, they were 5-6 too. Our team had beaten UNC that year – and I think, they were pretty much satisfied at that point. Daniel Evans was our QB – and the D wasn’t as good as this one.

This doesn’t mean we won’t lose Saturday – it just means that this game SHOULD be a win. If it’s not, it makes the decision on TOB pretty damn easy.

  14. mak4dpak 11/20/2011 at 7:41 PM #

We will win Saturday against Maryland, but I am concerned with knowing TOB and his crew are coming back for another season. If I knew they learned their lesson, and will make sure every game is treated like the game of their life, and the coaches call aggressively like they did against Clemson, on offense, and defense we will be allright. But if not, we are just in for another roller coaster season, for which I truly will not look forward to. But lets focus on Saturday, and see where things go from there. I hope the fans show up and cheer like they did against Clemson, as it was overwhelming, and I am sure it caused our opponent problems. And bring your howl towel. Go Pack!

  15. 61Packer 11/20/2011 at 7:46 PM #

Basketball- this is the first time I’ve seen intelligent basketball here since V left. No reason to believe it won’t continue.

Football- forget a possible TOB dismissal this season. Ain’t gonna happen, even if next Saturday produces another 37-0 stinker. Like it or not, we’ve got this staff for one more season at least, so we might as well get used to it. I do think we’ll win Saturday and will land a bowl game somewhere that nobody cares about going to except for the team.

As bad as our year has been, it hasn’t been as bad as the one that Penn State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State and UNC have endured. And you can bet we’ll be happier with our bowl assignment than the several teams who win 10 or more games, especially Houston, but get screwed by the BCS when ‘Bama gets a rematch with LSU despite not being able to score a TD on their home field in a game that mattered.

  16. GAWolf 11/20/2011 at 8:05 PM #

Chop…we all believe it should ABSOLUTELY be a win. On paper, we should dominate UM at home. Of course, on paper we damn sure shouldn’t have laid an egg at BC. And that’s sort of the point. Until we see good reason to start reserving hotel rooms, why get all giddy about the prospect of it?

  17. baxter 11/20/2011 at 8:59 PM #

If you would have told me we’d not only keep the streak alive vs UNC and ended the streak against Clemson 4 weeks ago, I would have slapped you in the face.

I’m thinking of heading to the game on Saturday so the thanksgiving void isn’t in full effect.

ancsu87 Says: … I am surprised that no many are talking about the defense and the overall game..or enjoying it.

First time here? I know the web site is called statefansnation, but it’s actually a hideout for the Pessimist Society. If you think something good may happen, stifle the urge to post your thought or else you’ll be hooted off the site. The way to be really cool here is to say that none of our coaches could beat you on XBox, we’ll be killed by our next opponent, mediocrity at State is a birthright and you have the absolute right to demand a national championship or boo if you don’t get one.

It’s best to just predict we will lose the next game so if we do you can crow about your clairvoyance or if we win you can say you’re happy you were wrong – both ways you’re a winner!

  19. GAWolf 11/20/2011 at 9:21 PM #

Master….your statements conflict with each other.

  20. JT 11/20/2011 at 9:22 PM #

I really hope O’Brien can win against UM and keep up a bit of mo’ over the next couple years. Seems like a solid guy, even if the grad rates aren’t so hot. That said, I’ve been bouncing in and out of apathy and I can’t say the Clemson win did much more than make me more pissed about the BC debacle. Seems like he has a track record now and it is utterly half-assed. If it can bump up to 3/4-assed, that’d be nice. But I gotta see it to believe it. Beating UM is a MUST for the program and for any further confidence in Sargent Stoic.

  21. GAWolf 11/20/2011 at 9:23 PM #

I’m looking forward to the game and hope we thumps the turtles. I want TOB to succeed here badly.

  22. BureauOfMines 11/20/2011 at 10:00 PM #

Next to the tarholes and dookeys, I despise the twerps. They have tried to incite riots at Carter Finley. Next the dookeys, theirs are the most potty mouthed fans in the ACC. During one basketball game with the visiting dookeys, the TV guys ran out of delay to notch out the F words. The game was stopped while K and Williams tried to get the crowd to tone down their language. They ought to rename that place the Comcuss Center.

I hope we put the quietus on the twerps and go bowling.

  23. ancsu87 11/20/2011 at 10:01 PM #

Master – I have been here many times before. I am just dumbfounded at the fact there are only 23 comments by Sunday night after this game. Contrast that to the number after the BC game by mid Sunday evening.

GAWolf – I graduated in 1987. I was there for a NCAA championship. I am a lifelong fan and a fourth generation NCState graduate. I am just curious why no one is elated and happy for the team, coaches and the fanbase?

VTpackfan – said it best “… armchair recruiting coordinators (and coaches – my comment. Although who could resist the opportunity to ridicule our new student athletes and future Alums all while backing it up by saying its their right as an State Alum.”

I could not agree with more.

  24. turfpack 11/20/2011 at 10:15 PM #

Believe me, the players have not forgoten last year at Merryland …alot of trash talk after game is what I heard.I think we open a can…..34-7 Sounds about right.

  25. ancsu87 11/20/2011 at 10:16 PM #

BTW – David Amerson TIED not set a new ACC mark for single-season interceptions with his 11th pick.

FWIW – I thought the Red uniforms looked good. Much better than the state flag uniforms Maryland wore. Look forward to next week’s game.
