SI projects Pack to go bowling

What a great week!! The start of the college football season is upon us in just four days (and the start of college basketball practice actually tips off in 31 days).

The national football previews that I have seen over the summer almost unanimously project Dave Doeren’s first installment of NC State Football to be generally ‘middle of the road’ in the national picture – consistently projected to be ‘rated’ somewhere between the #52 and #67 team in the county. You can click here for a prototypical example that has the Wolfpack in at #61; and, most of them say something very similar to the following:

Outlook: With all the changes and the losses the team racked up last season, the Wolfpack certainly could struggle this season. Not only did the team lose its offensive leader in Glennon, it lost a trio of key defensive backs in David Amerson, Brandan Bishop and Earl Wolff. A favorable home schedule, including games against Louisiana Tech, Richmond and Central Michigan, could give NC State a chance to stun the nation with a higher-than-expected win total. Make no mistake, though, Louisiana Tech and Richmond are no cakewalks, and Doeren knows just how tough Central Michigan is from his days in the MAC.

But despite those tepid projections, Sports Illustrated still is looking for the Wolfpack to win enough to become bowl eligible in coach Doeren’s first season. Today, SI projected all of the bowls for the 2013 college football season that included a UAB vs NC State match-up in the AdvoCare (Independence) bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana on New Year’s Eve. That would slot State as the seventh selection from the ACC.

A few other items in SI’s predictions were interesting and worthy of note:

* Florida State to win the ACC Championship. Not Clemson, who is slotted to the Chik-Fil-A Bowl and NOT an at-large BCS selection.

* Maryland is projected to squeak into a bowl as the ACC’s 8th selection during the Terps last season in the conference. NC State and Maryland will square off in the last game of the year and the Terps last game as an ACC institution.

* UNC is picked as the ACC’s #3 selection and is projected to play Cincinnati in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando. That could lead you to the inference that the Tar Heels are expected to make it to the ACC Championship game where they are projected to lose to Florida State.

So the holes are the (annual?) dark horse contender for the ACC title…think PJ and GT will have a lot to say about that. Getting the gameface on for Saturday-Go Pack! Re the aforementioned WTF losses: I think that DD and staff have started building a level of team respect that should minimize the chances of this kind of crap happening in the future…

If UNC is indeed the ACC’s #3 bowl rep, then this will go down as the most miserable year ever in ACC football.

The ACC has 2 very good teams (FSU and Clemson), 2 very bad teams (BC and WF), and almost a dozen mediocre teams.

I don’t see how any Wolfpack fan could accept a trip to Shreveport as a reward for a good season.

I agree “13OT”, that is not a rewarding season. UNC will never make it to the ACC Championship game. G.T. will see to that. Great week as we get underway with a new football season. Can’t wait until Saturday! Go Pack!!!!

I’ve said this many times here: the true ‘reward’ for a minor bowl — be it Shreveport, Louisiana or Slingshit, South Carolina — is the extra month of practice before the bowl. That’s more practice time than we are allowed for Spring Practice.

Teams like NCState become desirable to big bowl committees by having their fans attend the lessor bowls and becoming known as ‘good bowl teams.’

^^^ Several years ago, I proposed that UNC’s mascot be changed to the Dark Horses – they had a down year last year, but it looks like they’re back to their preseason dominance. (of course if Dark Horses doesn’t work, I can always settle for Chrome Domes).

Hey now, they were co ACC Costal division champions last year! They have the rings to prove it!

13ot…the division that UNC resides in has sucked. They have potential, but Miami has been down for so long and they have yet to carry any kind of weight since coming to the acc in football.

UNC is dangerous, but I can see them losing 3 games again which should (read should) keel them out of championship.

I think it’s cool that the ACC has a bowl game named after Russell Wilson.

“Several years ago, I proposed that UNC’s mascot be changed to the Dark Horses”

Shouldn’t that be colts? I mean, c’mon, they’re just soooo young every year.

“I don’t see how any Wolfpack fan could accept a trip to Shreveport as a reward for a good season.”

I doubt I would spend time and money to go to Shreveport, but any bowl in our situation is a big win for all the obvious reasons, but also for the added practice time. First year coaches, instilling new culture, new systems, new lingo… the more time the better, for existing players and potential early arriving freshman.

It takes about 3-4 years for new systems and culture to be firmly ingrained in a program. Any jump on that, regardless of how low rent, should be welcomed.

I love the Pack…but it is going to be a tough year. By the way LT average points scored per game last year was 51.5 and we lost three top defensive MEN…This may Hurt!!!

Boy has Wake County really improved.

^^^ Ah, yes, I forgot about the fountain of youth. Perhaps they could adopt “Forever Young” as their fight song.

This worked out well as a prediction, no?
