Pack9 Sinks Seahawks, 7-2

blockSbaseball

Wolfpack Baseball (38-11, 15-8 ACC) won for the 20th time in its last 21 tries Tuesday evening as it downed the Seahawks from UNC-Wilmington by a final score of 7-2.  With the win, the Pack sweeps the season series from the Seahawks, 2-0.

The Wolfpack offense would jump on the board early, scoring a run in the 1st inning as Jake Fincher would single with one out and then score from first on a Brett Austin double.  The Pack would add two more in the 2nd and three in the 3rd to build an early 6-0 lead after three innings.

Fincher would finish the day going 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Austin would enjoy a 1 for 3 day with an RBI and 2 walks.  Trea Turner went 2 for 4, knocking in one run, scoring twice, and adding another steal to his season total (23).

But offensively, it’s Logan Ratledge who has to get the big kudos tonight.  Ratledge went 2 for 4 out of the #9 slot, knocking in 2 runs and scoring once.  It would be a great omen for the Pack if Mr. Ratledge continues to produce from the bottom of the order.

On the mound, freshman starter Brad Stone was able to get through the 4th inning unscathed (4.0 IP, 2ER, 2H, 5K, 3BB), but would get into a bit of a jam in the 5th when he lost a bit of control and UNC-W would tag him for 2 runs.

But the Wolfpack bullpen would answer the call as they have all season long as Andrew Woeck, Travis Orwig, Ryan Wilkins and Grant Sasser would combine the rest of the way to keep the Seahawks batters from causing any futher damage.

Orwig would be the pitcher of record for the win, his 3rd of the year (3-0).

Blaze Tart would take the loss for UNC-W (Sorry, I know none of you care about that, but I just had to take the opportunity to get that name in here…it’s almost as good as Skye Bolt 😀 ).

Box Score

The Pack will next see action on Saturday at noon when they welcome the #9 ranked FSU Seminoles to town this weekend for a pivotal three game conference set that will go a long way toward deciding the post-season placements of both teams, both in conference and nationally.  We’ll have more on the FSU series later in the week, but for now take note of the altered schedule as it will be a Saturday thru Monday series with all three games on ESPN3, and Monday’s game scheduled to be televised on ESPNU.

    @bigwolfpacker – Indeed it is.

    @Pack78 – I haven’t kept a running tally (said a different way…I lost track), but we’ve been extremely good of late in producing runs with two outs. I always did love a two-out rally.

    The boys are keyed in.

    Who names their son Blaze?
    Though with a last name like that, they could have been cruelet, I suppose.

    Got my tickets for Saturday’s game a few weeks back. Glad I did. Will Rodon start on Saturday? It seems that has been the case most of the season but with the change in the start of the series I am not sure.

    Rodon will most likely pitch on Sunday. He pitched last Sunday of the Presbyterian series so I expect he will continue to pitch the second game of the series.
